Gee sitzt sehr entspannt auf einer Bank, lange Haare, Pony und Lachfalten. „Nächsten Monat fährt Penny nach Brandenburg“, erzählt sie. Penny soll berichten, wie man mitten in einem kapitalistischen System gut leben kann. Die Erwartungen wird er nicht erfüllen, Penny glaubt, vielen Linken fehle jedes Verständnis für seine Haltung des „Laissez faire“, sie würden auf politische Lösungen setzen. - Ich tue das auch. Atmo : Am Feuer -Unterhaltung: G: You too? P: I thought we convinced you last time. G: Bugger. Shall I take you back now? (LACHEN) Musik: Penny Rimbaud, Oh Magick Kingdom Intro Autorin: Zwei Wochen nach dem 11. September 2001 hatte ich in Wolverhampton auf einer Konferenz über Punk Penny kennengelernt, Dichter, Agent Provocateur, Philosoph und Schlagzeuger der Anarcho-Punkband Crass. O-Ton : Penny Rimbaud: I don‘t really see any differences between any of the various disciplines if you wanna call it that. And I move from one to the other without really noticing. You know I made up a haiku the other day, which was, I have to try to remember it. Tides turn, birds sing and we do the washing up. You know we‘ve got different activities and I really, there might have been times in my life where I was trying to push something but certainly in the last ten or fifteen years of my life I've lost any interest in pushing things. Eine Frau voller Energie und Tatendrang, jederzeit bereit eine neue Idee umgehend in die Tat zu setzen. Seitdem hat sich eine Freundschaft entwickelt und eine permanente Auseinandersetzung. Darüber wie Veränderungen in der Gesellschaft möglich sind, über die Verantwortung und Möglichkeiten jedes einzelnen und über die große Politik, an die sie nicht glauben. Wahlen sind so ein Thema, wo wir diametral entgegengesetzte Ansichten vertreten. O-Ton: Penny I mean I just bow into despair when people in the big Iraq protest were walking along with „Not in my name“ posters. Well in whose fucking name was it? That‘s what people vote for. They vote to be represented and almost inevitably that will involve, if not military war, certainly economic war, vicious competition, vicious nationalism, all sorts of absolutely inhumane forms of behavior. And there is no point what so ever in claiming that it is anything but „in your name“ if you vote. So it‘s morally reprehensible to vote. Übersetzer 1: Es hat mich in blanke Verzweiflung gestürzt, als Menschen gegen den Irak Krieg mit Postern „Nicht in meinem Namen“ demonstrierten. In wessen verdammten Namen denn sonst? Das ist es, was die Leute wählen, sie geben ihre Stimme, um repräsentiert zu werden und dazu gehört unausweichlich, wenn kein militärischer Krieg, dann sicher ein Wirtschaftskrieg, bösartiger Wettbewerb, bösartiger Nationalismus, alle Arten absolut unmenschlicher Verhaltensweisen. Es ist Blödsinn zu sagen, es sei nicht in „deinem Namen“, wenn du wählst. Deswegen ist es moralisch verwerflich zu wählen. O-Ton : Gee I think people can be self governing. I am not talking about going backwards, of course I do think things were better when they were smaller and there is inter- communication and interdependence, but the units if you like and I am not talking about communism, I am not talking about any of the isms, I do believe in people, but obviously I believe in the goodness of people, I suppose. Übersetzerin: Ich glaube, Menschen können sich selber regieren. Damit will ich die Geschichte nicht zurückdrehen, obwohl ich denke, es war besser, als alles übersichtlicher war, es Kommunikation untereinander und gegenseitige Abhängigkeit gab, kleinere Einheiten. Damit meine ich nicht Kommunismus oder irgendwelche ismen. Ich glaube an die Menschen, offensichtlich glaube ich an das Gute in den Menschen. Musik Autorin: Als ich zum ersten Mal in Dial House war, war ich erstaunt über das schöne Anwesen, die geschmackvolle Einrichtung, mit dem, was andere weggeworfen haben, die Kunst überall, über den idyllischen Garten und das abgewaschene Geschirr. Berühmt war das Haus schon damals, weil es zwischen 1977 und 1984 Zentrale und Ruhepol der anarcho-pazifistischen Punkband Crass gewesen war, 16 Erwachsene und Kinder lebten hier. Ich hatte mir Punk anders vorgestellt, nicht als Landkommune. Als ich Penny kennenlernte, recherchierte ich für eine Sendung über die Sex Pistols, The Clash und andere Punk Größen. Schnell war klar, dass Crass da nicht wirklich reinpassen, Crass waren anders …. Musik: Fight Wars Not Wars / Rival GTribal Rebel Revel Autorin: Crass hatten ihr eigenes Plattenlabel und sie verkauften ihre Platten preiswert, immerhin zwei Millionen. Mit den Gewinnen unterstützen sie andere Bands. Der Rest floss in eine Gemeinschaftskasse. Ihre multimedialen Konzerte organisierten sie selbst, häufig in Jugendzentren oder libertären Clubs. Am Ende wurde der Wasserkessel aufgesetzt, Tee gekocht und mit den Fans diskutiert. Flugblätter lagen aus, Informationen, darüber was in England oder auf der anderen Seite der Welt passierte und ganz praktisch: wie man sein eigenes Gemüse anbaut, Brot backt, ein Haus instand besetzt oder im Supermarkt klaut. O-Ton : Gee We were not trying to change the world, we were just trying to share the experiences that we‘d had about the world. And of course we had a whole range of ages in the band. Übersetzerin: Wir versuchten nicht die Welt zu verändern, sondern wollten die Erfahrung teilen, die wir in der Welt machten. Natürlich hatten wir Leute unterschiedlichen Alters in der Band. The place stank. The garden was strewn with the custom made cabinets of the group’s equipment, the black silk- emulsion paint drying on the hessian surfaces. Everything matched. The band logo shone silver from the bullet-proof Crimpeline of the speaker front. Very neat. Very fetching. Peter Wright (quoted in George Berger, The Story of Crass) One thing was central to TOPY, apart from all the tactics and vivid aspects, and that was that beyond all else we desperately wanted to discover and develop a system of practices that would finally enable us and like minded individuals to consciously change our behaviours, erase our negative loops and become focussed and unencumbered with psychological baggage. Genesis P-Orridge, Thee Psychick Bible In this brief article I want to explore two scenes from the late 1970s/1980s: the groups Crass (1977-84) and Thee Temple ov Psychick Youth (1981-). Both of these ‘performance fictions’ (as I will call them) had a mythopoetic character (they produced – or fictioned – their own world), perhaps most evident in the emphasis on performance and collective participation. They also involved a focus on self- determination, and, with that, presented a challenge to more dominant fictions and consensual reality more generally.1 1.

Most would accept too that the repercussions and reverberations of punk’s challenge to suffocating norms against which it rebelled so vehemently continue to be felt in the present tense.1 Behind the tabloid preoccupation with the Sex Pistols, a maelstrom of bands, including such acts as The Damned, The Buzzcocks, Slaughter and the Dogs, X-Ray Spex and The Raincoats, together redefined the experience of popular music and its relationship to the cultural mainstream. Bursting into the headlines as the unwelcome gatecrasher of the Silver Jubilee celebrations, punk inspired the misfits and malcontents of a new generation to reject the constraints of an exhausted post-war settlement, and to rail against boredom, alienation, wage-slavery, and social conformity. Yet, in retrospect, the purity of punk’s ‘total rejection’ of ‘straight society’ (if not seen as comprised from the outset) appears fleeting. By the tail-end of 1977, the integrity of punk’s critique seemed to be fast unravelling. What had declared itself to be an uncompromising cultural and musical assault on an ossified status quo, was become increased ensnared in the compromises of ‘incorporation’ and ‘commodification’. Punk bands which had earlier denounced the corporate big- time were signing lucrative deals with major record labels, keen to package and promote their rebellious messages.

I completely agree with Craig O’Hara’s perception when he states in his fine introduction to American punk rock, self-explanatorily entitled The Philosophy of Punk: More than Noise, that “Punk has been characterized as a self-destructive, violence oriented fad [...] which had no real significance.” (1999: 43.) He quotes Larry Zbach of Maximum RockNRoll, one of the better known international punk fanzines1, who speaks of “repeated media distortion” which has lead to a situation wherein “more and more people adopt the appearance of Punk [but] have less and less of an idea of its content.

    2 indeed, ‘Scientists who do Art’ is a long and honourable one; it is well known, for example, that Queen guitarist Brian May has a Phd in Astrophysics after submitting his thesis in August 2007 (one year earlier than he estimated it would take to complete). As well as writing up the previous work he had done, May had to review the work on zodiacal dust undertaken during the intervening 33 years, which included the discovery of the zodiacal dust bands by the IRAS infrared astronomical satellite. After a viva voce, the revised thesis (entitled A Survey of Radial Velocities in the Zodiacal Dust Cloud) was approved in September 2007, some 37 years after it had been commenced. It also works the other way. A science fiction author of whom I am rather fond is the late Leó Szilárd who was a Hungarian-American physicist and inventor. He conceived the nuclear chain reaction in 1933, Dear Friends, patented the idea of a nuclear reactor with Enrico Fermi, and in late 1939 wrote the letter for Albert Welcome to another issue of this peculiar little Einstein's signature that resulted in the Manhattan magazine which I started for fun, and which, like Project that built the atomic bomb. most things I start for fun, has got completely out of hand. You alone can do it. There is no authority but yourself Crass Yes Sir, I Will 1983 Introduction British anarchist punk band Crass’s fifth studio album Yes Sir, I Will (released on the band’s own label in 1983) was the most challenging and demanding record the group had yet committed to vinyl. 1 Its tone was dark, the musical delivery harsh and disjointed, the political invective stark and unrelenting. The entire record seethed with anger, incredulity, and indignation. For the moment in which it was produced, Yes Sir, I Will was an entirely fitting testament to the position in which “anarcho-punk” now found itself. From its own origins in 1977, this dissident strand within British punk had connected with a new audience willing to take seriously the “revolutionary” cultural and political aspirations that punk rock had originally championed. Anarcho-punk concerned itself with urging the individual to prize themselves free of social conformity and the shackles of societal constraint, championing personal independence and the exercise of free will. At the same time, anarcho-punk declared, as an indivisible and parallel objective, its support for the liberation of the planet from the tyranny of the “war state” and the overthrow of the disfiguring and alienating capitalist system. These intertwined aims were pursued with both intense determination and unflagging self-belief. By 1983, however, the limitations and inadequacies of the new anarcho-punk movement had become as transparent as its evident strengths, even to the band that had served as the movement’s principal catalyst.

[…] Bank balances were £11m below target overnight.’3 On 29 September 1983, the City of London (the powerhouse of British fnancial services, domestically and globally) played host to an unruly, radical, and uncompromising demonstration, which had drawn thousands of young militant activists onto the crowded streets of the London fnancial district. A large proportion of the demonstrators were punks; and amongst them the predominant contingent were anarchist-identifed punks. Unlike so many of the standard demonstrations of the early-Tatcher era in the UK, this ‘Stop the City’ (STC) event was not organised by an ofcially-sanctioned pressure group or single issue campaigning organisation. Andante un poco mosso - attacca 1 1984 2004 2 Ein Labelporträt von Michael Zinsmaier Eines Tages, so die Anekdote, betraten zwei gestylte Jugendliche den sagenumwobenen WAVE-Plat- tenladen in der Rue De Soeurs Macaron in Nancy um vielleicht in den Regalen nach dem neuesten Schmus zu suchen. Im Geschäft lief gerade die CD einer japanischen Noise-Band und die Disharmonien veranlassten einen der Beiden zu der Bemerkung, was das denn für eine Scheiße sei. Woraufhin der La- deninhaber ohne mit der Wimper zu zucken und ohne ein Wort zu verlieren die Lautstärke bis zur Uner- träglichkeit hochdrehte bis die Beiden die Flucht ergriffen. Dies sagt Einiges aus über Konsequenz und Philosophie von DSA. Der Ladeninhaber war Gérard Nguyen, 1951 als Sohn eines vietnamesischen Vaters und einer deut- schen Mutter geboren, in der von Rokoko-Prunk und Industrie gleichermaßen geprägten lothringschen 100 000-Einwohner-Stadt Nancy aufgewachsen und schon früh vom Morbus Musica Experimentalis befallen. Naturgemäß wenig linientreu zu den stilprägenden US-amerikanischen und britischen unabhängigen Labels wie Ralph Records, Rough Trade oder Recommended Records, versuchten die franko- phonen Vertreter der Free Musik und des Punks Anfang der 80er Jahre andere Wege zu gehen. Illusion Prod., Nato, AYAA oder das Kassetten-Label Tago Mago versprachen bezüglich Design und Grad an Strangeness weitere Verheißungen (aufgrund der Kunst- und Philosophiereferenzen gar eine Be- wusstseinserweiterung?) Vor zwanzig Jahren gegründet ist Gérard Nguyens Label (1988 kam der Laden in Nancy, 1998 der in Paris hinzu) heute allerdings eine der wenigen noch existierenden Firmen aus dieser Zeit mit Avantgar- de-Ausrichtung. Der Labelkatalog selbst liest sich heutzutage einerseits wie ein Kompendium der alter- nativen Avantgardeströmungen der letzten 30 Jahre, aber auch wie ein der Qualitätskontrolle verpflich- teter Gradmesser aktueller Tendenzen.
