As I have come to know, it begins with Kaneahuea and Koleka who gave birth to Koʻolau Agnes Kaheleluhi Kaneahuea in Honouliuli. It begins also with Kaluaikaaawa and Lukea who gave birth to Charles B. Maile in Waiʻanae. Charles and Ko‘olau had George Lahilahi Kaikainahaole Maile in Honolulu. Also in Honolulu, George and Helen Kalihilihiokawai Osaki West had eight children, including my grandfather Arlen Milton Maile. He and Rosella Oi Kun Maile gave birth to my father Keith Michael Tin Chong Maile in Honolulu. My father and mother, Patricia Lynne Dunkin-Maile, had both my older brother Daniel Kapalikūokalani Maile and me in Honolulu. This is my mo‘okū‘auhau. It is a genealogy that animated and motivated this dissertation project. My kūpuna (ancestors), ‘ohana (family), and one hānau (birthplace and homeland) have written their words through me in here. Mahalo nui to my parents, Keith and Patricia, for their support throughout my life. I was a kolohe (mischievous) child, but thankfully they never gave up on me. Instead, they demonstrated the importance of education. My mom homeschooled my brother and I. Complicated to say the least, it was a remarkable endeavor that she labored over. Despite not being fond of reading or writing as a kid, I do now and credit my mother with being the person to teach me how. I could not have composed this without her. Likewise, I could not have completed the project without my dad. He taught me about work, working hard, and working the system. These were not always easy lessons to learn, but I am grateful that he invested in me. I am grateful for what he continues to iv teach me with his breathtaking art. This dissertation is possible because of my mother and father, and I am so thankful for their teachings. Mahalo nui to Kapalikūokalani for being my kaikua‘ana, my older brother. It is an understatement to say that he is brilliant. Without success, I have tried my best to emulate his intelligence and genius. His own work is a tour de force of ‘ike Hawai‘i, or Hawaiian knowledge. If I ever needed some ‘ike, I knew I could seek him out. I am grateful for his labors in our community for the lāhui Hawai‘i (people and nation of Hawai‘i), and I am also thankful for how he has steered me in this project. I look up to him and his partner, Kamalu Du Preez, and hope that I have made them proud in these pages. Mahalo nui also to my grandma Rose for sharing her strength with me. It has not been easy without my grandpa around, but she has endured and advised me well, whether about my studies or social relations in general. I am so glad for all the time that we have shared. From farming in the South Valley to working out and deadlifting and squatting at five in the morning, she grounded me. She has been my balance. E mau ke ea o kēia mau ‘āina i ka pono! vii GIFTS OF SOVEREIGNTY: SETTLER COLONIAL CAPITALISM AND THE KANAKA ‘ŌIWI POLITICS OF EA by David Uahikeaikalei‘ohu Maile B.A., Economics, Pacific University, 2010 M.S., Communication Studies, University of Portland, 2012 Ph.D., American Studies, University of New Mexico, 2019 ABSTRACT This dissertation examines Hawaiian sovereignty in history, law, and activism. The project tracks Indigenous claims, negotiations, and articulations of sovereignty in Hawai‘i. Using a critically Indigenous approach to Hawaiian studies, I advance two main theses. First, Kānaka Maoli (Native Hawaiians) are discussed as a community divided on Hawaiian sovereignty. However, I contend that Kānaka Maoli exercise a diversity of strategies and tactics for Hawaiian sovereignty. I show how Kānaka Maoli practice multiple modalities of sovereignty that cumulatively produce the Kanaka ‘Ōiwi (Indigenous Hawaiian) politics of ea (life and sovereignty). Second, the historical development of settler colonial capitalism operationalized the US settler-state in Hawai‘i and fuels its management of Kānaka Maoli in contemporary struggles with federal recognition, nation-building, and astronomy industry development. Yet, Kanaka ‘Ōiwi artists and activists engage in geontologies of aloha ‘āina—a geographic way of being in the ‘āina (land and that which feeds)—that seek to overturn settler colonial capitalism and its champion the US settler-state. I argue that these practices issue gifts that disidentify with dominant ideologies of sovereignty as a way of reimagining ea for a decolonized then and deoccupied there. Therefore, my project explains the nefarious ways that the settler-state attempts to cohere territorial control to juridical authority and how Kānaka Maoli antagonize and disrupt the precariousness of settler sovereignty in Hawai‘i. Intervening into Indigenous Studies, Hawaiian Studies, and critical theories, the study offers new insights on the complex relationship between settler colonial capitalism and Hawaiian sovereignty.

On one side, under her camper's tarp, sat Wynona Morgan, a middle-aged woman wearing a modestly embroidered Indian smock and some jewelry. Morgan had only recently discovered her Indian heritage, but, she said, in some ways she had known who she was for years. ''My grandmother always told me that she came from Indians,'' Morgan told me. She is now a member of one of the groups meeting here in Jasper, the Cherokee Tribe of Northeast Alabama, which itself is new, having organized under that name in 1997. The tribe is committed to telling its story, in part through an R.V. campground named Cedar Winds that will eventually expand to include an ''authentic, working Cherokee Indian Village.'' Signature 2 To the five Albanian families for opening their homes and sharing their stories with me. 3 Abstract My research explores the dialectical relationship between identity and the conceptualisation/creation of history and heritage in migration by studying a socially excluded group in Greece, that of Albanian families. Even though the Albanian community has more than twenty years of presence in the country, its stories, often invested with otherness, remain hidden in the Greek ‘mono-cultural’ landscape. In opposition to these stigmatising discourses, my study draws on movements democratising the past and calling for engagements from below by endorsing the socially constructed nature of identity and the denationalisation of memory. A nine-month fieldwork with five Albanian families took place in their domestic and neighbourhood settings in the areas of Athens and Piraeus. Based on critical ethnography, data collection was derived from participant observation, conversational interviews and participatory techniques. From an individual and family group point of view the notion of habitus led to diverse conceptions of ethnic identity, taking transnational dimensions in families’ literal and metaphorical back- and-forth movements between Greece and Albania.

    DOI 10.17953/aicrj.43.2.warren Reading Bodies, Writing Blackness: Anti-/Blackness and Nineteenth- Century Kanaka Maoli Literary Nationalism Joyce Pualani Warren June 5, 1850, journal entry written by fifteen-year-old Hawaiian Prince Alexander A Liholiho, the future King Kamehameha IV, details his experience of anti-Black discrimination on a train in Washington, DC. The conductor “told [him] to get out of the carriage rather unceremoniously,” because of his skin color, “saying that [he] was in the wrong carriage.”1 For Alexander Liholiho, a law school student as well as the future monarch, this diplomatic tour of the United States and Europe was an opportunity to interact with foreign heads of state. Although the conductor deferred to the prince after someone whispered into the official’s ear at a critical moment in the argument, Alexander Liholiho surmised in his entry, “he had taken me for somebodys servant [sic], just because I had a darker skin than he had. Confounded fool.”2 During a soiree at the White House only days earlier President Zachary Taylor and Vice President Millard Fillmore had treated him as an equal; now a train conductor cruelly abused him as a “servant” in need of correction. Perhaps ironically, the young prince had found the president’s “plain citizens dress” [sic] lacking in comparison to his own “belted & cocked” attire, yet none of the outward markers of his royalty registered with the conductor.3 Instead, the conductor misreads Alexander Liholiho’s body based on his racist assumption that a Black body, or a body approximating one, could occupy no other narrative than the one inscribed Joyce Pualani Warren is an assistant professor in the Department of English at the University of Hawai‘i at Mānoa.

Drawing on concluded PhD research in social anthropology, it articulates a multi-sited ethnography of centres of research and in-depth interviews. This research project acknowledges the fact that while the literature on circulations of scholars is vast and continues to grow, ethnographic studies on this matter are still rare. For this reason, this paper focuses on an ethnographic comprehension, based on everyday conversations and evocative situations, of these lives that are built in a context of mobility. Here, I address notions of diaspora, global citizenship and cosmopolitanism as relevant hermeneutic tools for the comprehension of transnational sentiments of belonging amongst these scholars. At stake are intersectional elements that include class, gender, origin and caste, in the construction of transnational academic circulations. In our globalized world today, billions of people use the same social networks and listen to the same hit songs, wear the same style jeans, and play the same video games. Yet almost everybody is still a citizen of a nation-state, and national identity still motivates people. In fact, nationalism may be on the rise. Sports offers an interesting forum for considering nationalism and the role of the nation-state. The biggest sporting events in the world—the Olympics and the Football (Soccer) World Cup—pit teams of the different nation- states against each other. They pursue medals while promoting national pride. Some scholars believe sporting competitions like these demonstrate the importance to people of identifying with a group. If group inclusion is an essential part of being human, then national identities and nationalism are powerful motivators. However, sports also show the complexity of nation-states. For example, the United Nations recognizes 195 sovereign nation-states. The FIFA World Cup only allows those 195 to show their flags, even though 211 teams can participate in the qualifying games. Some of these flag-free teams represent communities that aren’t fully recognized nation-states.

    A Balkanist in Daghestan: Annotated Notes from the Field Victor a. Friedman University of Chicago Introduction and Disclaimer The Republic of Daghestan has received very little attention in the West. Chenciner (1997) is the only full-length account in English based on first-hand visits mostly in the late 1980's and early 1990's. Wixman's (1980) excellent study had to be based entirely on secondary sources, and Bennigsen and Wimbush (1986:146-81 et passim), while quite useful, is basically encyclopedic and somewhat dated. Since Daghestan is still difficult to get to, potentially unstable, and only infrequently visited by Western scholars (mostly linguists), I am offering this account of my recent visit there (16-20 June 1998), modestly supplemented by some published materials. My intent is basically informative and impressionistic, and I do not attempt to give complete coverage to many topics worthy of further research. This account does, however, update some items covered in the aforementioned works and makes some observations on Daghestan with respect to language, identity, the political situation, and a comparison with the another unstable, multi-ethnic, identity construction site, i.e., Balkans, particularly Macedonia. Background Daghestan is the third most populous Republic in the Russian Federation (after Bashkortostan and Tatarstan; Osmanov 1986:24).     Guises of Transnationalism in Israel/Palestine: A few notes on 5 Broken Camerasi Yael Friedman University of Portsmouth The discussion of Israeli cinema is governed, predominantly, by the perspective of national cinema. The dominant framework of analysis tends to be that of Zionism and, by and large, both in critical writing and exhibition contexts, a very clear dichotomy is maintained between Israeli and Palestinian cinemas and between Israeli cinema and cinemas of the Middle East. Such a governing perspective often excludes or distorts a critical discussion of the transnational in films that emerge both from Israel and Palestine. The changes brought about by processes of globalisation to the production, circulation and reception of films around the world also shape contemporary cinema in Israel/Palestine to a considerable extent. Throughout the history of Palestinian cinema its production and exhibition contexts were distinctively transnational, while Israel’s small-scale national film industry increasingly shifts towards transnational modes of production. The survival and the recent success of Israeli cinema, both internationally and domestically, is largely dependent upon co-production agreements, the involvement of European funders, and the global festival circuit. Despite this prominent trend, only a few recent publications address Israeli cinema from a transnational perspective.ii This short article follows in a similar vain. It offers a critical discussion of the acclaimed documentary 5 Broken Cameras (Emad Burnat and Guy Davidi, Israel/Palestine/France/Netherland, 2011), whose joint Palestinian-Israeli direction and transnational context of production, challenge the national boundaries of both Israeli and Palestinian cinemas while, at the same time, probelmatizing the notion of the transnational.
