THANK YOU FOR ALWAYS GIVING YOUR BEST! Why they become doctors

Do you look up to your doctor? Who wouldn’t? Doctors spend about 12 years just getting ready to prpraacctticice medicine as fully qualified, specialized professionals. Those years can cost a lot of money. And as the med- ical drama TV shows depict so well, those years can cost a lot in terms of sleep and personal relationships as well. So why do a determined few decide to run the gauntlet? Surely it’s not just for the glory? On National Doctors’ Day, March 30, 2020, the government invites Americans to share gratitude for all those who take up the challenge. Family physician Jim Pacala told Minnesota Public Radio that he still enjoys being a doctor, even more than when he first started out many years ago. Although he knew it would be a stimulating career path to follow, he has been incr easingly struck by how fulfilling and rewarding his work is. “I have come to relish the hum- bling experience of being a doctor,” he says. “I relish reflecting on what I don’t know and don’t understand as much as what I do know and understand.” Being a doctor is a caring profession, yes, but it’s also about solving puzzles. It’s about using science to help patients become whole and healthy again. Deciding to become a doctor is never an easy deci- sion. At the least, it means years of difficult study. At the most, it means spending your life and career as the witness to the physical suffering of fellow humans .
