FROM THE RECORDER’S DESK……… by John R. Knox, P.P., Recorder The message this issue …………….. MEMBERSHIP Greetings Nobles: We are now beyond Mid-Year in 2019 – and our membership levels are staying stable, but is that where we want to be? We need to begin an open conversation about where our organization is, where we want to be headed, and how we get there. While our Temple dues help to balance the annual operating budget, we are very dependent on having enough active members to maintain that level. With declining membership comes fewer people to assist in events which will eventually impact our ability to meet our Well, we have made it to the half way mark of the year and annual obligations financially. are looking forward to the second half being as fun filled and as Summer Ceremonial saw 18 new Nobles cross the Sands of challenging as the first half. the Desert. Colonial Bernie McAllister Imperial Sir Jeff Sowder was installed in Nashville at the annual ILL. Sir Richard Hersom session, and he has implemented his membership campaign Meeting Adjourns for the coming year. It is called “Just One.” A simple but powerful idea drives this initiative: If every current Shriner commits to Next Stated Meeting recruiting or restoring “just one” noble to our temple, the ranks of December 4, 2019 Legion of Honor Open Room our brotherhood will swell tremendously. If you know of a Master Crazy Cops and Buccaneers Serving Dinner and Clean Up Mason who would like to join our ranks, get them a petition, or drop us a line at [email protected]. Remember, any Noble who is the first line signer for two or more new Nobles will get next year’s dues paid. It’s easy to send in a referral by going to beashrinernow.com/referral. They will help get things moving and make these men Masons and Nobles. Our membership numbers are looking good for the year so far, but there are still quite a few Nobles who are “lost in the desert.” We haven’t heard from these folks and they are at risk of being suspended. Perhaps you are aware of one? Encourage them to contact the membership committee or the Kora office. There are still tickets available for the Membership committee’s rifle raffle. You could be the lucky winner of a Henry Shiners Tribute edition .22. Don’t be left out! See a committee member or Fall Ceremonial the Kora Office to get your tickets. Whether you are a shooter or not, this is a really nice addition to any Shriner’s collection. Since Friday, September 27, 2019 only 300 tickets will be sold, odds of winning are pretty good. including Cold Sands

$$ Pot Of Gold $$ The 2019 Divan has decided to do a pot of gold starting with the April stated meeting. That evening each noble will be given a ticket, at some point during the evening we’ll draw a winning ticket. A lucky noble could go home with a crisp $100.00 bill. But, if we draw a blank ticket, it rolls over to next stated meeting which would be worth $200.00. Every stated meeting we’ll add $100.00 to the pot if no winner is picked. But you must attend stated meetings to get a ticket. Let us all bring the fun back and keep Kora strong. Good luck to all. TOGETHER WE CAN MAKE A DIFFERENCE ~ 2019 Divan

After that, I never saw a moment of nervousness throughout her recovery.” Maddison and her parents also met Robert L. Sheridan, M.D., assistant chief of staff and chief of the burn service at Shriners Hospitals for Children — Boston. Dr. Sheridan says treadmill injuries are very complicated because of the damage to the bone and the small blood vessels in the impacted area. He notes that some treadmill burns do not look severe at first but get worse in the days following the injury, which can complicate diagnosis and treatment. In Maddie’s case, the care team decided not to operate, but rather to manage her injury with rehabilitation and scar management. Maddie and her family say many positive things came out of such a scary experience, including the incredible support they received from their family, friends and all the staff at Shriners Hospitals for Children — Boston. With all that support, Maddie knew she had many people cheering her on and was able to tackle every challenge in order to get better. Not only did Maddie recover, she is back to playing softball! It is easier for open burning to spread out of control when it is windy and dry. Watch children while the fire is burning. Never let children or pets play or stand too close to the fire. Attend to the fire at all times. A fire left alone for only a few minutes can grow into a damaging fire. Keep a fire small, which is easier to control. Never use gasoline or other flammable/combustible liquids. Always have a hose or bucket of water nearby to put out the fire. Make sure to put it completely out before leaving the site. Additionally, to prevent a burn injury after the fire is out: DO NOT PUT OUT BEACH FIRES WITH SAND. Beach fires should be put out with water only and left uncovered. Sand traps heat and can intensify the temperature, creating a hidden danger. Many burns occur after flames have been extinguished, when someone walks across the sand, unaware that a fire is still smoldering below. If you use a fire pit, mark a clear perimeter around the fire zone, so that even if the pit is removed, people can tell where the hot Sawyer with therapy dog sand or ground remains.

While all of her friends were getting glammed up and ready to go for a night to remember, Raya was spending her prom in the last place she had ever imagined – the hospital. Raya was admitted to the Springfield Shriners Hospital inpatient rehabilitation program after inflammation in her brain caused her to lose cognitive and motor function. She also experienced a misalignment of the vertebrae in her neck, ultimately requiring traction to correct and a neck brace to maintain the alignment. Raya spent three hours per day, five days a week in intense physical, occupational and speech therapies for a number of weeks in order to regain her ability to process information and to improve her movement and function. With hard work comes frustration, and it was evident that Raya was upset about missing the end of her senior year. The child life department wanted to do something extra special for Raya, and thought that hosting a prom would relieve the stress and fear she was experiencing being absent from school. The therapeutic pieces of planning a prom were incorporated into Raya’s daily therapy, and staff members from a number of departments pitched in to throw her an event she will never forget. Morabito is a Cyprus Shriner based in Glenmont, New York, so he is well versed in the great work that the Shriners fraternity does to support the hospital philanthropy. In 2014, Morabito tasked himself with the ultimate challenge – get to Shriners Hospitals for Children in Springfield, Massachusetts…on foot. This 160-mile journey was extremely taxing on his body, and one of the most difficult experiences he had ever endured, but recalls it was also his most proud moment. When he turned the corner and arrived at the Springfield Shriners Hospital, he was greeted by a sea of grateful Melha Shriners, cheering him on and eager to hear about his inspirational voyage. Morabito has made the 160-mile trek to Springfield, MA six times, and three years ago extended his route to Shriners Hospitals for Children in Boston. This new destination brought his total trip up to 250 miles in just nine days. In his mind, no distance is too great to travel in order to raise awareness for Shriners Hospitals for Children. Shriners and friends have embraced his journey, inviting him into their homes to enjoy a delicious meal, take a hot shower and In 2008, at the age of 44, Eric Morabito was experiencing many rest until he sets out the following day. He enjoys these moments, of the warning signs of a heart attack, and that was the wakeup but also looks forward to “roughing it” wherever he is able to pitch call he needed to institute a serious lifestyle change. He promised his tent. Along the way, Morabito has developed a keen eye for himself and his family that he would put his health first, setting a picking up loose change during his travels. To date, Morabito has personal goal to walk at least four miles per day, rain or shine. He walked over 28,000 miles and counting and has raised over $44,000 hasn’t missed a day since March 15, 2009. to benefit the Shriners Hospitals in Boston, Erie, Philadelphia and Years and miles later, he decided to use his walking efforts Springfield, as well as the Cyprus Shriners transportation fund.
