FROM THE RECORDER’S DESK……… by John R. Knox, P.P., Recorder The message this issue …………….. MEMBERSHIP Greetings Nobles: We are now beyond Mid-Year in 2019 – and our membership levels are staying stable, but is that where we want to be? We need to begin an open conversation about where our organization is, where we want to be headed, and how we get there. While our Temple dues help to balance the annual operating budget, we are very dependent on having enough active members to maintain that level. With declining membership comes fewer people to assist in events which will eventually impact our ability to meet our Well, we have made it to the half way mark of the year and annual obligations financially. are looking forward to the second half being as fun filled and as Summer Ceremonial saw 18 new Nobles cross the Sands of challenging as the first half. the Desert. Colonial Bernie McAllister Imperial Sir Jeff Sowder was installed in Nashville at the annual ILL. Sir Richard Hersom session, and he has implemented his membership campaign Meeting Adjourns for the coming year. It is called “Just One.” A simple but powerful idea drives this initiative: If every current Shriner commits to Next Stated Meeting recruiting or restoring “just one” noble to our temple, the ranks of December 4, 2019 Legion of Honor Open Room our brotherhood will swell tremendously. If you know of a Master Crazy Cops and Buccaneers Serving Dinner and Clean Up Mason who would like to join our ranks, get them a petition, or drop us a line at [email protected]. Remember, any Noble who is the first line signer for two or more new Nobles will get next year’s dues paid. It’s easy to send in a referral by going to beashrinernow.com/referral. They will help get things moving and make these men Masons and Nobles. Our membership numbers are looking good for the year so far, but there are still quite a few Nobles who are “lost in the desert.” We haven’t heard from these folks and they are at risk of being suspended. Perhaps you are aware of one? Encourage them to contact the membership committee or the Kora office. There are still tickets available for the Membership committee’s rifle raffle. You could be the lucky winner of a Henry Shiners Tribute edition .22. Don’t be left out! See a committee member or Fall Ceremonial the Kora Office to get your tickets. Whether you are a shooter or not, this is a really nice addition to any Shriner’s collection. Since Friday, September 27, 2019 only 300 tickets will be sold, odds of winning are pretty good. including Cold Sands

$$ Pot Of Gold $$ The 2019 Divan has decided to do a pot of gold starting with the April stated meeting. That evening each noble will be given a ticket, at some point during the evening we’ll draw a winning ticket. A lucky noble could go home with a crisp $100.00 bill. But, if we draw a blank ticket, it rolls over to next stated meeting which would be worth $200.00. Every stated meeting we’ll add $100.00 to the pot if no winner is picked. But you must attend stated meetings to get a ticket. Let us all bring the fun back and keep Kora strong. Good luck to all. TOGETHER WE CAN MAKE A DIFFERENCE ~ 2019 Divan

After that, I never saw a moment of nervousness throughout her recovery.” Maddison and her parents also met Robert L. Sheridan, M.D., assistant chief of staff and chief of the burn service at Shriners Hospitals for Children — Boston. Dr. Sheridan says treadmill injuries are very complicated because of the damage to the bone and the small blood vessels in the impacted area. He notes that some treadmill burns do not look severe at first but get worse in the days following the injury, which can complicate diagnosis and treatment. In Maddie’s case, the care team decided not to operate, but rather to manage her injury with rehabilitation and scar management. Maddie and her family say many positive things came out of such a scary experience, including the incredible support they received from their family, friends and all the staff at Shriners Hospitals for Children — Boston. With all that support, Maddie knew she had many people cheering her on and was able to tackle every challenge in order to get better. Not only did Maddie recover, she is back to playing softball! It is easier for open burning to spread out of control when it is windy and dry. Watch children while the fire is burning. Never let children or pets play or stand too close to the fire. Attend to the fire at all times. A fire left alone for only a few minutes can grow into a damaging fire. Keep a fire small, which is easier to control. Never use gasoline or other flammable/combustible liquids. Always have a hose or bucket of water nearby to put out the fire. Make sure to put it completely out before leaving the site. Additionally, to prevent a burn injury after the fire is out: DO NOT PUT OUT BEACH FIRES WITH SAND. Beach fires should be put out with water only and left uncovered. Sand traps heat and can intensify the temperature, creating a hidden danger. Many burns occur after flames have been extinguished, when someone walks across the sand, unaware that a fire is still smoldering below. If you use a fire pit, mark a clear perimeter around the fire zone, so that even if the pit is removed, people can tell where the hot Sawyer with therapy dog sand or ground remains.

While all of her friends were getting glammed up and ready to go for a night to remember, Raya was spending her prom in the last place she had ever imagined – the hospital. Raya was admitted to the Springfield Shriners Hospital inpatient rehabilitation program after inflammation in her brain caused her to lose cognitive and motor function. She also experienced a misalignment of the vertebrae in her neck, ultimately requiring traction to correct and a neck brace to maintain the alignment. Raya spent three hours per day, five days a week in intense physical, occupational and speech therapies for a number of weeks in order to regain her ability to process information and to improve her movement and function. With hard work comes frustration, and it was evident that Raya was upset about missing the end of her senior year. The child life department wanted to do something extra special for Raya, and thought that hosting a prom would relieve the stress and fear she was experiencing being absent from school. The therapeutic pieces of planning a prom were incorporated into Raya’s daily therapy, and staff members from a number of departments pitched in to throw her an event she will never forget. Morabito is a Cyprus Shriner based in Glenmont, New York, so he is well versed in the great work that the Shriners fraternity does to support the hospital philanthropy. In 2014, Morabito tasked himself with the challenge – get to Shriners Hospitals for Children in Springfield, Massachusetts…on foot. This 160-mile journey was extremely taxing on his body, and one of the most difficult experiences he had ever endured, but recalls it was also his most proud moment. When he turned the corner and arrived at the Springfield Shriners Hospital, he was greeted by a sea of grateful Melha Shriners, cheering him on and eager to hear about his inspirational voyage. Morabito has made the 160-mile trek to Springfield, MA six times, and three years ago extended his route to Shriners Hospitals for Children in Boston. This new destination brought his total trip up to 250 miles in just nine days. In his mind, no distance is too great to travel in order to raise awareness for Shriners Hospitals for Children. Shriners and friends have embraced his journey, inviting him into their homes to enjoy a delicious meal, take a hot shower and In 2008, at the age of 44, Eric Morabito was experiencing many rest until he sets out the following day. He enjoys these moments, of the warning signs of a heart attack, and that was the wakeup but also looks forward to “roughing it” wherever he is able to pitch call he needed to institute a serious lifestyle change. Kora Band - Summer Ceremonial Parade KORA SANDS SUMMER 2019 CRAZY COPS DRIFTERS by William Brochu, Scribe by Dan Guilmette, Scribe Hello all. Hope everyone enjoyed the late, short, but always I’m not quite sure I can pack everything I busy summer of 2019. The few weekends were filled with events want to say in to this article, theres just too like the Lobster bowl and many many parades. It is now time put much to be excited about, but here goes. the carts away and get ready for fall. The changing of the leaves, Greetings fellow nobles and ladies! Just two the crisp air, and yes the season that follows (not too fast) reminds months into our very first parade season, us that we are Maineahs. I can say we have at least 7 parades under out belt and countless hours of practices. Before we started our parade season we all got together to have fun and relax for a weekend at Bernie's where some of us learned how to properly stoke a fire, (thank you Chief Bucknam).

We have some annual and new events to look forward to before winter. Crazy Cops are hosting another Comedy Show which will be held on October 12th. The prior shows were very successful with a lot of laughs among so many friends. The 2nd Section Auction is happening the following Saturday which is a great time. The big show happens in November. That’s right…FEZtival of Trees. The many volunteers and helpers makes this event feel magical. So much fun to watch the children placing tickets into the candy canes of their favorite tree. Yes of course the Matchbox tree, obviously. Seriously, the Crazy Cops wish everyone the best as 2019 draws to an end. Stay safe our friends. Our first Parade in Auburn was super exciting and immensely gratifying to finally be doing what we set out to do. To hear the CYCLE CORPS crowd cheer us on and to see the kids waving and smiling makes by Lenny Perkins, Scribe everything worth it. Later that day we rushed to Old Orchard Beach for their memorial day parade and again were greeted with Greetings from the Cycle Corps! As I write this, our parade smiles and enthusiasm. Our first parade day was in the bag and we season is well under way. We started out with back to back parades were feeling pretty good. Summer Ceremonial was a blast as we on Memorial Day, first at Auburn’s 150th anniversary celebration again drifted through the streets of O.O.B. Then we experienced and ending with a showing at Old Orchard Beach, with 15 riders our first breakdown (outside of sleeve issues) at LaKermesse at both. Following the parade, a great lunch was had by all at the where a throttle cable snapped. This was a long parade and we OOB ballpark before we went our separate ways. We went back to pushed pretty hard to put on a good show. Independence Day OOB for the Summer Ceremonial parade, and on we go to Augusta, brought us two more great parades. The Town of Freeport showed Lisbon, Yarmouth, Wilton, Rangeley, and back into Lewiston over us some Incredible energy I won’t soon forget. Jaison and Cindy the next several weeks. Hall hosted our Unit 4th of July BBQ and we finished a very hot We are also looking forward to our annual fund-raising day in the Augusta parade. Moxie was next on our agenda as adventure at the Great Falls Balloon Festival held in Lewiston, we continued honing our routine and having a great time doing August 16th through 18th. Plan on stopping by our booth for a it. We are learning so much about these trikes and how we can bite to eat – we make the best burgers around! perform better, safely. Drifters continued on page 32. Our membership continues to grow, we are now at 32 members, consisting of active, associate, and auxiliary members. It’s great to see us parading with a full complement of riders, I must say we look pretty impressive. And speaking of impressive, I’d like to give credit to Frank Welch for hauling the bike trailer everywhere we go and making sure that we all are where we need to be with his email reminders, and to our wonderful mechanically inclined members who keep those bikes in good running order, of which I am not one! Sometimes we forget all the time and commitment it takes to keep them going. Until next time, peace and happiness to all and see you on the parade route! www.korashriners.org 39 KORA SANDS SUMMER 2019 Drifters, continued from page 31. GREETERS The help and support from other Kora units has been astounding By Craig Rubner, Scribe and we are so grateful to be a part of this Temple. And Finally, we would like to welcome our newest Member to the Kora Drifters Sometimes things appear to come together seamlessly and that Family, Noble Curtis Gray and his lady Tabatha and New Noble Joe was the case at the Summer Ceremonial this year. We have added a couple of new parades. We even got approached to do a parade next year just after finishing the summer ceremonial parade. We still have a lot of parade season left. Well Nobles and Ladies its been a quiet summer for the Provost, The Kora Mini Racers have had a busy start to the 2019 Parade We went “Dark” after the Ceremonial but will pick up in August season. With 3 new members and as many as 10 drivers a parade, with many potential events to come. we’ve already driven in 7 parades, and had two displays. With 8 Speaking of the Ceremonial.....we had eleven Provost show more parades this season, we would gladly welcome any Shriner ready to dazzle all with our traffic control skills, we loaded onto interested in joining our unit. Cole, Scribe direction. When we do a job we do it right! As I right this on the day of the deadline (which is when I do my best work) we are days away form the Lobster Bowl. A great event! I’m not much of a football fan, in fact I am not a football fan at all and I don’t think a football is a very good Christmas present, but seeing the high school kids doing such good work for the hospitals is inspiring. In my last submission I eluded to good things happening in three’s...... well Below is a good example these three Nobles were initiated together in 2016 Summer Ceremonial in Belfast/ Northport and all three found their way to the Provost Unit left to right is Kurt Howard, Rob Selberg (Scribe) and John Dumas (now unit director). Meet Joe and Kathy Gregory of Chesterville. Joe is a member of Maine Lodge #20 in East Wilton. Without Kathy, Joe might not have joined the Motor Corps or even the Shrine. Back in May of 2014, Kathy decided to reward Joe for all of his hard work taking care of the family by purchasing him a new Mustang convertible. This sweet ride is metallic gray with a black top, boasting 362 horsepower from its 289 engine. It’s mostly stock, but Kathy suggests that Joe may have made just a few small modifications to make it sound a bit louder—imagine that! Come on, gals. Your guys all need new convertibles and to join the Motor Corps. There’s nothing like receiving a nifty and unexpected gift In closing, I hope you all have a great rest of the summer. In the that can activate a person’s philanthropy. Not only was cruising next issue we will be talking FEZtival of trees! The very next month after receiving the car, Joe joined Kora Temple and the Motor Corps. We’re glad to have them! If you hear a noise followed by seeing a gray streak go by, it’s probably not a cause for concern; it may just be Joe and Kathy headed to a parade. This parade season has been awesome!
