Buffalo Sabres Daily Press Clips January 4, 2014 Devils-Sabres Preview By Nicolino DiBenedetto Associated Press January 4, 2014 The Buffalo Sabres may own the fewest points in the NHL, but they've hardly resembled the league's worst team lately at home. Ryan Miller has had a hand in that success. Miller will likely be in net looking to win a sixth straight home game, as the Sabres face the New Jersey Devils on Saturday night. Buffalo (11-26-4) not only has the worst record in the league, its average of 1.63 goals ranks last - 0.60 behind Minnesota for 29th. The Sabres fell 4-1 at Minnesota on Thursday, losing their 11th straight on the road. "It's just one of those things where when we're bad, we're bad," interim coach Ted Nolan said. They've been very good at home, however, going 5-0-1 in their last six home games. They're averaging 2.75 goals to win four straight there for the first time since a five-game streak from Feb. 19-March 12, 2012. Miller has been superb at home, compiling a 1.34 goals-against average and .962 save percentage while winning his last five games in Buffalo. He last won six straight there from Nov. 13-Dec. 9, 2010. Miller, named to the U.S. Olympic team earlier this week, may have a chance to equal that run since he's 4-1-1 with a 1.60 GAA and a shutout over his last six home meetings with the Devils (17-17-8).

  • Dobber's 2010-11 Fantasy Guide
DOBBER’S 2010-11 FANTASY GUIDE DOBBERHOCKEY.COM – HOME OF THE TOP 300 FANTASY PLAYERS I think we’re at the point in the fantasy hockey universe where DobberHockey.com is either known in a fantasy league, or the GM’s are sleeping. Besides my column in The Hockey News’ Ultimate Pool Guide, and my contributions to this year’s Score Forecaster (fifth year doing each), I put an ad in McKeen’s. That covers the big three hockey pool magazines and you should have at least one of them as part of your draft prep. The other thing you need, of course, is this Guide right here. It is not only updated throughout the summer, but I also make sure that the features/tidbits found in here are unique. I know what’s in the print mags and I have always tried to set this Guide apart from them. Once again, this is an automatic download – just pick it up in your downloads section. Look for one or two updates in August, then one or two updates between September 1st and 14th. After that, when training camp is in full swing, I will be updating every two or three days right into October. Make sure you download the latest prior to heading into your draft (and don’t ask me on one day if I’ll be updating the next day – I get so many of those that I am unable to answer them all, just download as late as you can). Any updates beyond this original release will be in bold blue.

  • MEDIA GUIDE 2014 IIHF World Junior Championship a Chance to See the Best Ice Hockey Players
MEDIA GUIDE 2014 IIHF World Junior Championship A chance to see the best ice hockey players One misconception about the IIHF World Junior Championships is that it features “future” stars. If you look at the development of the event, you will realize that this magnificent tournament features players who are world class stars already today. The World Juniors also show, by the way, how quickly a year goes by. Let’s take you back to December 2012 and the IIHF World U20 event in Ufa, Russia. Canada’s Ryan Nugent-Hopkins who led the tournament in scoring with 15 points in 6 games is today an integral part of the Edmonton Oilers while his countrymen Jonathan Huberdeau (9 points in 6 games in Ufa) and Mark Scheifele (8 points in 6 games) are the future of the Florida Panthers and Winnipeg Jets respectively. USA’s All-Star defenseman and gold winner in Ufa, Jacob Trouba, is playing sensationally well for the Winnipeg while teammate Alex Galchenyuk personifies the new generation Montreal Canadiens. Last year’s dominating Finns Joel Armia and Markus Granlund have both signed NHL contracts and are biding their time in the AHL, but Swedes Filip Forsberg, Elias Lindholm and Rickard Rakell have all played NHL games this season. So think about this when you watch the 38th IIHF World Junior event in Malmö – you may most likely have one chance to see the best players. Next year they are probably celebrated professionals either in the NHL or in any of the European leagues. A good example of the natural turnover is the defending World Champion United States: from last year’s golden roster in Ufa only there are only three returnees on the 2014 team.

  • Icehl 2011 YEARBOOK Pay Tribute the Winning Designs and Honor Those That Fell Just Shy of the Mark
the world’s first crowd-sourced fantasy hockey league IceHLIceHL 20112011 YEARBOOKYEARBOOK INAUGURAL EDITION icethetics.info • FREE YEARBOOK IceHL 2011 From the commissioner... Hello IceHL Fans! What began as an ambitious idea to build and brand a hockey league from the ground up has turned into one of the most sought-after fantasy leagues on the web. In 2008, we began a design-by-democracy process of creating a league from scratch on the Icethetics blog. Readers voted on every aspect from deciding which cities would get teams to what names logos each should use. Two years after the project began, 20 fans breathed life into the league by taking part in our inaugural fantasy hockey season. As we begin our second year, I thought it appropriate to take a look back at how we got where we are and what happened during that inaugural season. I hope you enjoy this yearbook and the upcoming IceHL season! Chris Smith IceHL Commissioner www.icethetics.info P.S.: Try not to confuse me with the über-talented IceHL logo artist who shares my name and whose work you will see throughout this book. Enjoy! 2 YEARBOOK IceHL 2011 From the Ground Up... The project was announced as “From the Ground Up” on Aug. 10, 2008. In that blog post, plans were laid out for Icethetics’ biggest undertaking to date. Designing an entire hockey league from scratch would be an arduous process, but readers would be able to give their input in every decision made, every step of the way. NORTH AMERICA OR THE WORLD? After 69% of readers showed an interest in moving forward with the project, they were asked how the geography of the league should be defined.

  • Young Bucks Report 2010-11: a Look at the SCHL's Junior Aged
Young Bucks Report 2010-11: A Look at the SCHL’s junior aged prospects Overview: With the upcoming World Junior Championships, I thought it would be appropriate to pen a little write-up on each team’s young bucks/prospects. The only stipulation is that players should be 20 years of age or younger. Barracudas: Kyle Beach: Controversy has always seemed to follow the Blackhawks prospect. Picked 11th overall in the 2008 Entry draft, Beach clearly has power forward potential. The knock on his has been undisciplined and erratic play. He didn’t endear himself to many by punching out a much smaller ‘Hawks prospect in camp. So far this year, Beach has put up average number (12 points in 28 games). Do the Barracudas farm him for another year? Jared Cowan: Spokane junior is one of only four returnees for team Canada at the World Juniors. He’s more of a shut-down defensive type, but he’s got a smooth stride and has also shown a nasty stride. This season in the WHL, Cowan has had a breakthrough campaign, with 21 points through 26 games. Still, don’t expect huge numbers at the NHL level. Battalion: Taylor Hall: The first overall pick has been scoring of late after some early season inconsistency. Hall still has to use his teammates better, as his solo rushes have become predictable and ineffective. Nonetheless, the future is bright for this big-lipped, big shooting standout. Day Express: Jordan Schroeder: Minnesota native had a curiously disappointing camp with the ‘Nucks before being dispatched to Manitoba.
