TOURNAMENT INFORMATION Team USA MEDIA POLICIES The 2009 World Men’s Under-18 Hockey Championship falls under the governance of the International Ice Hockey Federation. IIHF protocol, as it pertains to media, is as follows: n All accredited media shall have free access to cover all team practices, game-day skates and games. n Locker rooms are closed to all media. n All player interviews will be conducted in a designated “mixed zone” area within the arena. n Requests for players should be directed to the appropriate media/public relations staff assigned to each team. The interviews will then take place in the “mixed zone” area. n Players will be made available in the “mixed zone” no later than 10 minutes after the conclusion of the game, with a general media access period of 30 minutes. n Following the conclusion of Team USA games and after some practices, a formal press conference may be held with Head Coach Ron Rolston. n All media relations requests for the U.S. Men’s National Under-18 Team should be directed to Chris Peters. n The official television partners of the event will be given priority for all interviews.

IIHF TOURNAMENT FORMAT Three- System for Preliminary Round n Three points shall be awarded for the winning team at the conclusion of regulation. n One point will be awarded to both teams at the conclusion of regulation if the game is tied. n An additional point shall be awarded for the team winning the game in either the period or the Game-Winning Shots Procedure. Overtime Procedures n If a preliminary round game is tied after three periods, a five-minute four-on-four sudden- death overtime period shall be played immediately after an intermission of three minutes. The teams will defend the same goals as in the third period. n If a playoff, quarterfinal, semifinal or bronze-medal game is tied after three periods, a 10- minute four-on-four sudden-death overtime period shall be played immediately after an intermission of three minutes. The teams will defend the same goals as in the third period. n If the gold-medal game is tied after three periods, a 20-minute four-on-four sudden-death overtime will start immediately after a 15-minute intermission during which time the ice will be cleaned. The teams will change ends. n If no goal is scored in the overtime period of any game, the Game-Winning Shots Procedure will apply. Game-Winning Shots Procedure n All shots will be held at one end of the ice surface. Three players from each team will take shots alternately until a decisive goal is scored. If the score is still tied after three shots by each team, the procedure will continue with a tiebreak sudden-death shoot-out by one player from each team. The teams may use the same player or new players for each in the tiebreak shoot-out, until the outcome is decided.

Jim JOHANNSON ASSISTANT EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR, HOCKEY OPERATIONS

JIM JOHANNSON is the assistant executive director of hockey operations for USA Hockey. Johannson has been USA Hockey’s liaison with the local organizing committee in preparation for the 2009 International Ice Hockey Federation World Men’s Under-18 Championship and will oversee the tournament’s operations. A two-time U.S. Olympian (1988, 1992), Johannson bring extensive experience in international ice hockey both as a player and administrator. In 2002, Johannson served as team leader for the silver-medal winning U.S. Olympic Men’s Ice Hockey Team at the 2002 Olympic Winter Games in Salt Lake City, Utah, and was the senior director of hockey operations for Team USA at the 2006 Olympic Winter Games in Torino, Italy. A full-time employee of USA Hockey, Johannson joined the organization on Sept. 1, 2000, as manager of international activities and U.S. Olympic Committee relations. He was promoted to senior director of hockey operations, a newly created position, on Aug. 5, 2003. On June 25, 2007, Johannson was elevated to assistant executive director of hockey operations and is responsible for the day-to-day management and integration of all in-sport related initiatives. He handles USA Hockey representation in obtaining players and coaches for national teams in international competition. In addition, Johannson interfaces with the USOC on matters of mutual interest. Johannson has worked with nine U.S. National Junior Teams and 10 U.S. Men’s National Teams in a variety of capacities. He resides in Colorado Springs, Colo.

Scott MONAGHAN DIRECTOR OF OPERATIONS, NTDP

SCOTT MONAGHAN has been a part of USA Hockey’s National Team Development Program since its inception in 1996. He is responsible for all aspects of the NTDP. Monaghan has been involved in every International Ice Hockey Federation World Men’s Under-18 Championship, dating back to 1999. He was the team leader for each of the U.S. Men’s National Under- 18 Team’s gold medal victories (2002, 2005, 2006). He has also served on the staff of five U.S. National Junior Teams. Before joining the NTDP, Monaghan spent eight years with the Lake Superior State University Athletic Department. He served as the Lakers’ sports information director for four seasons (1989-93). In 1993, Monaghan was appointed to serve as an assistant athletic director. While with the Lakers, Monaghan coordinated fundraising and construction for the $5.9 million Gem of the North, as well as all marketing and ticket sales efforts. A native of Ho-Ho-Kus, N.J., Monaghan resides in Ypsilanti, Mich., with his wife, Becky.

RON ROLSTON, currently in his fifth season as a head coach at USA Hockey’s National Team Development CHADD CASSIDY, who is in his third season as an assistant coach at USA Hockey’s National Team Program, is the U.S. Men’s National Under-18 Team’s head coach for the third time at the International Development Program, will serve as the assistant coach for the U.S. Men’s National Under-18 Team for Ice Hockey Federation World Men’s Under-18 Championship. Rolston previously led the U.S. Men’s the second time at the International Ice Hockey Federation World Men’s Under-18 Championship. Prior to his arrival at the NTDP, Rolston was an assistant coach at Boston College from 2002-04. He also served as the top assistant coach at Harvard University from 1999-2002.

Rolston also spent time as an assistant coach at Clarkson University (1996-99) and Lake Superior State University (1990-95). While at LSSU, Rolston helped guide the team to two national championships (1992, 1994). He was elevated to associate head coach for the Lakers for the 1994-95 season.

A native of Fenton, Mich., Rolston earned his bachelor’s degree in business management from Michigan Tech University. He was a three-year hockey letterman (1986-89) with the Huskies and served as an alternate captain during his senior season. Rolston was the co-recipient of the 1986-87 Norbert Matovich Memorial Award as Michigan Tech’s most outstanding freshman.

Rolston resides in Ann Arbor, Mich., with his wife, Shannon, and their daughter, Maeve.

Prior to joining the Silvertips, Varady was an assistant coach with the Pittsburgh Force of the North American Hockey League. He helped guide the Force to the 2003 Robertson Cup as national champions.

As a player, Varady played three seasons (1997-2000) at Union College and served as team captain during the 1999-2000 campaign. After suffering an injury during his senior season (2000-01), Varady remained with Union as a volunteer assistant coach.

NICK MELDRUM, in his second season at USA Hockey’s National Team Development Program, is the BILL HALL will serve as the team leader for the U.S. Men’s National Under-18 Team at the 2009 equipment manager for the U.S. Men’s National Under-18 Team at the 2009 International Ice Hockey International Ice Hockey Federation World Men’s Under-18 Championship for the first time. Meldrum was part of the staff for the U.S. National Under-17 Team in 2007-08. Prior to joining the NTDP, Meldrum served as the student manager for the Lake Superior State University men’s ice hockey team for two seasons (2005-06, 2006-07).

DAVE FISCHER is in his fifth year as director of media and public relations for USA Hockey. Prior to joining LEADERSHIP USA Hockey, Fischer spent 17 years at Michigan Tech University, where he served as assistant athletic director for communications and marketing.

While at Tech, Fischer spent five years (1989-94) simultaneously serving as information director for the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference. Additionally, Fischer served on the Western Collegiate Hockey Association’s television committee and has been a part of the event management staff of the NCAA Men’s Ice Hockey Frozen Four since 1989.

Fischer resides in Colorado Springs, Colo. with his wife Angie and their daughter Jennifer.
