Dear friends "Be devoted to one another in brotherly love. Honour one another above yourselves. Never be lacking in zeal, but keep your spiritual fervour, serving the Lord." Romans 12:10-11 It might be difficult sometimes to keep that 'spiritual fervour' during these times of challenge and uncertainty, but be encouraged because Jesus will be with you wherever you are even, or especially, behind closed doors. This comes to you as usual, with our prayers and blessing, but in a slightly different style. I hope you will find it helpful, interesting and easy to read - we would be pleased to receive any thoughts about that or, indeed, any news that would be of parish-wide interest through this letter. Do feed this through to Sally The bigger picture It is sad that we cannot gather together to celebrate VE Day and I know that a number of plans were in gestation. However, I will be covering this remembrance in my online Thought for the day on Friday. There are various resources and a prayer available on the ChurchofEngland VE site and there will be a special Diocese VE Day 75th Anniversary Service on Friday 8 May at 11.15am on https://www.facebook.com/rochestercathedral/ It may be that your neighbourhood has arranged something, but you may like to see what the Dry Hill neighbourhood have sent round (below). Maybe you could do one of these things for yourself. This Sunday is Vocations Sunday. The 'Its Your Calling Day' on 9 May has been cancelled. However, there is a resource available for those wanting to explore their vocation Rochester IYC resources and CofE vocation guide. As the Tonbridge Deanery Vocation Adviser, Sally Musson is always happy to talk anything through with you. Parish activity Plenty of this and we can only highlight some each week : It was good to see so many of you at the Parish meeting last Monday evening and to be able to share with you a simple initiative to help you communicate the good news of the Gospel down your street with a 'Friendship Card'. I hope that this will be an effective way of enabling the Parish to unite round the Gospel. Please don't worry if you are unable, for whatever reason, to engage with this. However, if you could not be with us Monday evening can I encourage you to tune into it on our website - it is only about 30 minutes - join via the Website media . My daily reflections ‘Thought for the day’ from this coming Saturday are designed for those you will be giving the cards to Facebook @TonParishChurch If you are keen to join in with this initiative and take some 'Friendship Cards' from boxes which will located from today at the Coach House; 10 Dry Hill Road; 6 Faraday Ride; 30 Allington Drive and 21 The Ridgeway. A briefing sheet for the initiative is HERE. I would like to encourage you in all you are doing to help neighbours and engage with the community. In this vein I am interviewing a number of the community leaders to explain what their organisation is doing. This is then included as part of the Sunday service. As many of you will have seen last week it was Nicolas Heslop, leader of Tonbridge & Malling Borough Council and this coming Sunday it will be James Priory, Tonbridge School Headmaster. The celebrations for St Philips 50th anniversary this coming weekend have, inevitably, had to be postponed to a date to be decided. The Bishop of Tonbridge, Simon Burton-Jones, was to have been the guest preacher there on Sunday 10 May. He has recorded a short, enlightening and encouraging message which will be part of the Parish online service on that day. Do join it on our YouTube Ton Parish Missing that after church fellowship? Perhaps you would like to share with others across the Parish in a post-service coffee and a chat over Zoom? If so, please contact Jane Higgs [email protected] Worship and spiritual support. Do continue to engage with all, or some, of our livestreamed offerings: Parish-wide service on Sunday at 10.00am, Bible study at 6.30pm Sunday and our Wednesday morning reflection at 10.00am. Watch this space for news very soon about an interesting new accessible resource via the telephone for those not online. Our work with children and young families goes forward and if you would like to be part of Mark's exciting plans then do please be in touch. Sunday Club online was launched last Sunday with an estimated 20+ children attending. It will be back this Sunday with Emily at the helm, supported by others. The Family Activity Sheets are available on the website. Anyone can use these - you might even try engaging with them over video messaging. If you have any questions about our work with youth, children and families please email [email protected] Behind the scenes with....... We will look at what various people and groups are up to and this week it is Stepping Stones. They have created a WhatsApp group to support and encourage each other. They have taken their Bible studies online (via Zoom) with meetings on Thursday mornings at 10.00am and Wednesday evenings at 8.00pm. They also engage in 'Chat after Church'. The group is also keeping in touch with those not online by phone and mail. Prayer The weekly prayer card with reading, reflection, prayer and song for Monday to Saturday is available here on our website. There will be more news next week about Thy Kingdom Come - the global prayer initiative running between Ascension Day (21 May) and Pentecost (31 May) and the Parish plans for that period. Parish family news Congratulations to ........... .....Wendy on her appointment, subject to all the necessary paperwork and clearances, as Associate Vicar in the Parish. We have been much blessed by her work amongst and wish her every blessing on her future ministry ......Stuart and Sarah Seldon on the birth of their first child Fraser James on 19 March ......Les Naylor on a new granddaughter, Juliette Sara, born on 30 April. …….recent wedding anniversaries David and Wendy Balcombe (40th) and Jason and Wendy Carr (25th) A number of you will remember the Revd Colin Hutchings who has helped in this Parish in the past. His sister, Ruth Burton, is a faithful and longstanding parishioner and their father was a curate here. Colin went to be with the Lord on 21 April. He will be buried in Pattishal churchyard on Friday 8 May at 11.00am. We offer our sympathy and prayers to Ruth and the family. Our churchwardens explain that, with the continuing lockdown and the likelihood that churches will not be open for services for some time, we have, with the agreement of the staff concerned, furloughed our cleaning staff and our organist with effect from 1 May. Andy Page, our Youth and Children's Minister, will also start furlough at the end of this week. Please remember these folk in your prayers, together with other members of the Parish who are on furlough or facing uncertainty over their future employment. We continue to see many signs of spiritual growth, mutual help and support and new and deepening friendships. So do be encouraged as the green shoots of spring develop into the full bloom of summer. We can still say (or sing) "Alleluia he is risen. He is risen indeed alleluia!" May God bless you all Mark .
