  • The Economic Benefits of Whale Watching in El Vizcaíno Biosphere Reserve, Mexico
Economía, SociedadEconomía, y Territorio, Sociedad vol. y xvi Territorio,, núm. 51, vol. 2016, xvi, 429-457 núm. 51, 2016, 429-457. 429 The economic benefits of whale watching in El Vizcaíno Biosphere Reserve, Mexico El beneficio económico del avistamiento de ballenas en la Reserva de la Biosfera El Vizcaíno, México Ludger Brenner* Marius Mayer** Claudia Stadler*** Abstract This paper attempts to determine the economic value generated by whale watching at El Vizcaíno Biosphere Reserve/Lower California. Based on a representative sample survey, the analysis focuses on identifying specific visitor segments, their respective spending patterns, and the service sectors that profit. Results highlight that visitor spending generates a considerable gross turnover of just under $ 3,000,000 USD, benefitting mostly local tourism businesses. In order to increase the economic benefits of whale watching as a means of fostering sustainable regional economic development, it is crucial to focus tourism planning and marketing tools on well-defined visitor segments to satisfy their specific needs and expectations. Keywords: economic valuation, whale watching, biosphere reserves.

How difficult was it for the organization when its founder was the subject of such scrutiny? It was an uphill battle for us after Lance’s public revelations. There were a lot of changes and challenges we had to navigate through. We knew we had to work harder to remind people, remind the public, what we do, how we do it, and make sure people understood that Livestrong was still here to serve cancer patients and their families. Our mission really drove everything, and our constituents are at the center of that mission. Driving that home was, and still is, job one. Gareth Byatt Principal Consultant, Risk Insight Consulting || www.riskinsightconsulting.com July 2018 Pro cycling – manage the risk, achieve success The 2018 Tour de France finished on the Champs Elysees in Paris on Sunday, 29th July, with Welshman Geraint Thomas crowned the victor. Bradley Wiggins, Chris Froome (four times) and now Geraint Thomas have won six of the last seven Tour de France GC “yellow jerseys”, riding for Team Sky. With this victory, Team Sky has now won the “General Classification” (or GC) competition in the last four grand tours on the trot (the Tour de France twice, the Giro d’Italia and the Vuelta a España). The world of professional cycling has, like many sports at the professional level, changed a great deal over the years. This article focuses on how data- and facts- driven risk management is embedded into modern-day race strategy, tactics and decision-making in the grand tour races. Examples from Team Sky are provided in this article, with parallels drawn to achieving success in business. Geraint Thomas of Team Sky wins the iconic “Queens stage”, stage 12, of the 2018 Tour de France at the top of l’Alpe d’Huez on 19th July (photo by self).
