The set design for the 88th annual production, For the Record, called for a massive 11-foot-diameter rotating globe suspended above the stage and wrapped in the masthead of the show’s fictional newspaper, the Chicago Offering. Northwestern’s set, scenery, and paint shops are located in the Virginia Wadsworth Wirtz Center for the Performing Arts, but Waa-Mu is performed in Cahn Auditorium. How to pull off such a planetary transplant? By deflating Earth. The globe began as a plain white (albeit custom-built) inflatable balloon, but after its initial multisection muslin wrap was created (to determine shrinkage), it was deflated, rigged, reinflated, motorized, map-designed, taped for a paint mask, primed, painted, and unpeeled to reveal computer-generated, to-scale continents. -

[BROOKLYN NY—OCTOBER 2ND, 2013] After garnering over 12,000 fans on Facebook, Girl on Girl director, Jodi Savitz, is reaching out to the public for support. Beginning October 2nd, Savitz will launch a 35-day crowdfunding campaign on the popular fundraising site, Indiegogo, with the goal of raising $100,000 to fund the first phase of production. So far, Girl on Girl has proven its worth through its growing international fan base, and its sponsorship from New York Foundation for the Arts (NYFA) and Curve Magazine. Unlike any documentary film to date, Girl on Girl focuses its lens on the lives of feminine lesbians, and invites the audience to discover what life is like for women whose identity is incessantly trivialized and stigmatized, both outside of and within queer spaces. Girl on Girl challenges assumptions of what society imagines a lesbian to look like and, for the first time, addresses the issue of feminine lesbians feeling invisible even after coming out. The independently produced film features such ‘celesbians’ as Lauren Bedford Russell (The Real L Word: Season 3) and Huffington Post columnist and award-winning lesbian porn producer, Jincey Lumpkin (JuicyPinkBox.com), along with several other women from around the country, including New York, Florida, Utah, and North Carolina. -

Representations of Bisexual Women in Twenty-First Century Popular Culture
Straddling (In)Visibility: Representations of Bisexual Women in Twenty-First Century Popular Culture Sasha Cocarla A thesis submitted to the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the Doctorate of Philosophy in Women's Studies Institute of Feminist and Gender Studies Faculty of Social Sciences University of Ottawa © Sasha Cocarla, Ottawa, Canada 2016 Abstract Throughout the first decade of the 2000s, LGBTQ+ visibility has steadily increased in North American popular culture, allowing for not only more LGBTQ+ characters/figures to surface, but also establishing more diverse and nuanced representations and storylines. Bisexuality, while being part of the increasingly popular phrase of inclusivity (LGBTQ+), however, is one sexuality that not only continues to be overlooked within popular culture but that also continues to be represented in limited ways. In this doctoral thesis I examine how bisexual women are represented within mainstream popular culture, in particular on American television, focusing on two, popular programs (The L Word and the Shot At Love series). These texts have been chosen for popularity and visibility in mainstream media and culture, as well as for how bisexual women are unprecedentedly made central to many of the storylines (The L Word) and the series as a whole (Shot At Love). This analysis provides not only a detailed historical account of bisexual visibility but also discusses bisexuality thematically, highlighting commonalities across bisexual representations as well as shared themes between and with other identities. By examining key examples of bisexuality in popular culture from the first decade of the twenty- first century, my research investigates how representations of bisexuality are often portrayed in conversation with hegemonic understandings of gender and sexuality, specifically highlighting the mainstream "gay rights" movement's narrative of "normality" and "just like you" politics. -

The L Word and Narrating Biographies
The L Life: The L Word and Narrating Biographies Leah Barbara Caluzzi Submitted in total fulfillment of the requirements of the degree of Masters of Arts (Screen Studies) July 2015 Department of Culture and Communication, Faculty of Arts University of Melbourne Produced on archival quality paper 1 Abstract This thesis examines the reception of the television series The L Word by young adult lesbians in Melbourne. It shows the influence of the series as a media object that is significant to three aspects of these women’s lesbian lifestyle construction: coming out, lifestyle development, and integration into the lesbian community. This thesis argues that, as a media object, the series helps these lesbians narrate their own biographies as they negotiate their life transitions into adulthood. 2 Declaration This is to certify that: i. this thesis comprises only my original work towards the Masters ii. due acknowledgement has been made in the text to all other material used iii. this thesis is less than 40,000 words in length, exclusive of tables, maps, bibliographies and appendices Leah Barbara Caluzzi Date: 9-11-15 3 Acknowledgements I would like to take the opportunities to acknowledge the many people who have helped to make this project possible. Firstly I would like to thank my primary supervisor, Assoc. Professor Audrey Yue for her tireless guidance and direction across the length of this project. The Economic Benefits of Whale Watching in El Vizcaíno Biosphere Reserve, Mexico
Economía, SociedadEconomía, y Territorio, Sociedad vol. y xvi Territorio,, núm. 51, vol. 2016, xvi, 429-457 núm. 51, 2016, 429-457. 429 The economic benefits of whale watching in El Vizcaíno Biosphere Reserve, Mexico El beneficio económico del avistamiento de ballenas en la Reserva de la Biosfera El Vizcaíno, México Ludger Brenner* Marius Mayer** Claudia Stadler*** Abstract This paper attempts to determine the economic value generated by whale watching at El Vizcaíno Biosphere Reserve/Lower California. Based on a representative sample survey, the analysis focuses on identifying specific visitor segments, their respective spending patterns, and the service sectors that profit. Results highlight that visitor spending generates a considerable gross turnover of just under $ 3,000,000 USD, benefitting mostly local tourism businesses. In order to increase the economic benefits of whale watching as a means of fostering sustainable regional economic development, it is crucial to focus tourism planning and marketing tools on well-defined visitor segments to satisfy their specific needs and expectations. Keywords: economic valuation, whale watching, biosphere reserves. -
Greg Lee Livestrong
How difficult was it for the organization when its founder was the subject of such scrutiny? It was an uphill battle for us after Lance’s public revelations. There were a lot of changes and challenges we had to navigate through. We knew we had to work harder to remind people, remind the public, what we do, how we do it, and make sure people understood that Livestrong was still here to serve cancer patients and their families. Our mission really drove everything, and our constituents are at the center of that mission. Driving that home was, and still is, job one. And LIVE that’s no different today than when I started. greg lee, reg lee joined livestrong as its President of Chief Financial Officer in 2006, when its the Livestrong founder, professional cyclist and American Foundation, icon Lance Armstrong, was still the public G face of the organization. A COMPREHENSIVE ANALYSIS OF TELEVISION’S LESBIAN, GAY, BISEXUAL, AND TRANSGENDER IMAGES. words and images matter NETWORK RESPONSIBILITY INDEX TABLE OF CONTENTS • TABLE OF CONTENTS TK EXECUTIVE SUMMARY 3 ABC 8 CBS 10 CW 12 FOX 14 NBC 16 ABC FAMILY 18 FX 20 HBO 22 HISTORY 24 MTV 26 SHOWTIME 28 TBS 31 TLC 32 TNT 34 USA 36 MORE CABLE NETWORKS 38 BIOS 41 EXECUTIVE SUMMARY The GLAAD Network Responsibility Index (NRI) is an evaluation of the quantity and quality of images of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgen- der (LGBT) people on television. It is intended to serve as a road map toward increasing fair, accurate, and inclusive LGBT media representations. GLAAD has seen time and again how images of multi-dimensional gay and transgender people on television have the power to change public percep- tions. The Pulse of Equality Survey, commissioned by GLAAD and conducted by Harris Interactive, confirmed a growing trend toward greater acceptance among the American public. Among the 19% who reported that their feelings toward gay and lesbian people have become more favorable over the past 5 years, 34% cited “seeing gay or lesbian characters on television” as a contrib- uting factor. In fact when Vice President Joe Biden endorsed marriage equality this year, he cited the NBC sitcom Will & Grace as one of the factors that led to a better understanding of the LGBT community by the American public. As diverse LGBT images in the media become more prevalent, the general public becomes exposed to the truth of the LGBT community: lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender Americans are parents and teachers, law enforce- ment and soldiers, high school students and loving elderly couples.
