Dancer Documentary “Dancer” is an ambitious and detailed study of Polunin’s personal and creative life, collected from rare archive materials, family records, and interviews with Polunin, those close to him, and notable ballet professionals. Famous documentary director Steven Cantor focused on Polunin’s extraor- dinary physical profile and his unique emotional spectrum, which shows through both on stage and in life. A rebel, a genius, and a loner, Polunin created a stir in the ballet world when he became the youngest principal dancer of the London Royal Ballet in history – and then when, at the peak of his career, he unexpectedly left, citing his desire to be independent, free, and not to belong to anyone, even if such a decision would be accompanied by self-destruction. The film also tells about Polunin’s collaboration with famous photographer David LaChapelle, who shot his expressive dancing for the music video for Hozier’s “Take Me To Church,” which became a smash hit practically overnight.

The Summer Garden

The Summer Garden occupies an island between the , Moika, and the Swan Canal in Saint Petersburg and shares its name with the adjacent Summer Palace of Peter the Great. Czar Peter the Great personally designed the park in 1704, supposedly, with the assistance of the Dutch gardener and physician Nicolaas Bidloo. Starting from 1712, the planting of the Summer Garden was further elaborated by the Dutch gardener Jan Roosen, who was the chief gardener of the park till 1726. The well-known French architect Jean-Baptiste Le Blond, who arrived in St. Pe- tersburg in 1716, added to the park the flavour of a Garden à la française. The Summer Garden was largely completed in 1719. The walks were lined with a hundred allegorical marble sculptures, executed by Francesco Penso, Pietro Baratta, Marino Gropelli, Alvise Tagliapietra, Bartolomeo Modulo and other Venetian sculptors that were acquired by Sava Vladislavich. In the late 20th century, 90 surviving statues were moved indoors, while modern replicas took their place in the park. The sequence of patterned parterres, originally more formal than the current landscapes, were the site of Imperial assemblies, or lavish parties which often included balls, feasts, and fireworks. Apart from the statuary, a major park attraction were the fountains, the oldest in Russia, representing scenes from Aesop’s fables. Some of these fell out of use and were demolished after the 1777 in- undation which destroyed the fountain machinery acquired by Peter the Great in Britain. However, it was soon restored to its original regular plan. Today its avenues are adorned by 79 sculptures by Italian sculptors of the 17th and 18th centuries, including Boratta, Bozzazza, and many others - the oldest collection of garden statues in Russia. And the selection of mythological themes in the stat- ues is no accident, as the images of the gods and heroes of Antiquity reflected the ideas underpinning Peter’s state and transforming activity. In the 19th century, the intended arrangement of the decorative sculptures in the Summer Garden was forgotten, quite a few of the sculptures were no longer extant, and those remaining were moved from place to place, thus destroying the original design. In late 20th century, all sculptures were rearranged and today they stand in accordance with the aesthetic ideas charactertistic of the beginning of the 18th century. Georg von Veldten installed a delicate iron-cast railing, separating the park from the public walk of the Palace Embankment, be- tween 1771 and 1784 to a design. The grille is suspended between 36 granite columns crowned with urns and vases. The poet Anna Akhmatova, among others, considered the grille to be a pinnacle of art casting and one of the symbols of St Petersburg. Alexander Pushkin chose the park as a setting for childhood walks of the fictional character Eugene Onegin. A fence designed by the architect Yury Felten in 1773-1786 bound the Neva River end of the Summer Garden. The Garden is also home to a Coffee House (designed by Carlo Rossi) and a Tea House (designed by Ludwig Charlemagne); in front of the latter is a statue of the great Russian fabulist Ilya Krylov by the sculptor Pyotr Klodt. The base of the monument is decorated by a bas relief based on themes from Krylov’s tales.
