They are the 800 martyrs of Otranto — killed savagely by the Ottoman army in 1480, as well as two Latin American nuns who worked their whole lives at the service of the poorest and invalid: Mother Laura Montoya (1874-1949), and Mother Lupita (1878-1963). This is one of the great events planned in the Year of Faith. Antonio Primaldo and Companions Antonio Pezzulla, called Primaldo, is the only name that has been recorded of the 800 fishermen, artisans, shepherds and farmers of the small Italian city of Otranto, in the region of Apulia, whose blood was shed out of fidelity to Christ, during an incursion of the Ottoman army on July 29, 1480. The martyrdom of Antonio Primaldo and his companions is set historically in the warlike context that lasted for a long time in Europe’s relations with the Ottoman Empire. After the fall of Constantinople in 1453, and the siege of Belgrade in 1456, Mehmed the Conqueror tried in vain to conquer the Island of Rhodes in 1479. He then went to the end of the Italian coast, closest to the ports of Albania, already under his dominion. In the Hands of the Ottoman Army The Turks approached the city of Otranto, with some 150 ships and more than 15,000 men, led by the Gedik Ahmed Pasha. The city had 6,000 inhabitants and had been abandoned by the Aragonese militias, committed in Tuscany. No sooner has the siege began, which lasted 15 days, they were ordered to surrender, and ordered to renounce their faith in Christ and convert to Islam. As the inhabitants refused, the city was bombed and fell into the hands of the invaders on August 12. The inflamed army killed them mercilessly, striking them with scimitars. I am Pastor Scott Robinson, and today we welcome Alice Fleischman and Mike Broderick from the musical group Aurora Celtic, who are providing Special Music for our worship. We are still waiting for a safe time to resume regular public worship. Pandemic cases, COVID hospitalizations and deaths are again rising. Both the CDC and our own ELCA say people who are at high risk for serious illness from Coronavirus should NOT attend indoor worship services in person, and those who regularly spend time with families or friends in high risk groups shouldn’t either. We do not want to endanger anyone unnecessarily. Which is why we are here, worshiping together even though safely apart. If you have friends or family members who do not have internet service, you can easily record this service on your laptop and sit down and share it with them. I would be glad to show you how. Barro Jorge Mario Bergoglio, since becoming Pope Francis in March 2013, is focusing on martyrdom in the Roman Catholic Church. Two months into his pontificate, Francis canonized the 813 martyrs of Otranto, the largest such group in recorded Catholic Church history. Five months later, Francis beatified another large group, 499 martyrs of the Spanish Civil War. Francis continues to emphasize martyrs over confessors, the name given to blessed persons who died of natural causes. In 2019, Francis beatified 39 martyrs and only 6 confessors. As a snapshot of what is happening, within the last four years, 14 persons who died in Guatemala have qualified as blessed martyrs; six were foreign missionaries who served in Guatemala and eight were national lay persons, including one child.1 The missionaries were Oklahoma priest Stanley Rother, the first U.S. born martyr beatified by the Catholic Church, three Missionaries of the Sacred Heart priests, a priest of the Order of Friars Minor, and James Miller, of the De La Salle Brothers of the Christian Schools and the last Vatican beatification for 2019.

McCleary Harvard University Saints are a major point of disagreement between the Roman Catholic Church and Protestant faiths. During the Protestant Reformation in the early 1500s, the Catholic doctrine of the intercessory power of saints was theologically denied by Martin Luther and John Calvin on the grounds of justification by faith alone in Jesus Christ.1 The Catholic Church’s position on saints, particularly as agents for souls in purgatory, created a “soul-prayer industry,” whereby indulgences funded a variety of religious activities and institutions. Notable here were chantry foundations, which provided an endowment for the purpose of employing priests to sing masses to benefit the souls of deceased persons.2 Protestantism, by contrast, rejected belief in purgatory and the mediating power of saints. One reason the Catholic Church maintained the cult of saints throughout the centuries is to energize the Catholic membership. The nomination of candidates for sainthood begins in a local context with a cult of worshippers. The variety and specialization of would-be saints are products of the local demand for veneration.3 This process allows changes in regional preferences to be reflected in the choices of individuals nominated for sainthood. 1Philip Melanchthon, a close friend of Martin Luther and a Professor of New Testament at Wittenberg University, drafted a common confession for the Lutheran Lords and Free Territories. Known as the Augsburg Confession, the document was presented to Emperor Charles V on June 25, 1530.
