Box 1346 Ann Arbor, Ml 48106-1346 Abstract This thesis compares Umbria before and after the Roman conquest in order to assess the impact of the imposition of Roman control over this area of central Italy. There are four sections specifically on Umbria and two more general chapters of introduction and conclusion. The introductory chapter examines the most important issues for the history of the Italian regions in this period and the extent to which they are relevant to Umbria, given the type of evidence that survives. The chapter focuses on the concept of state formation, and the information about it provided by evidence for urbanisation, coinage, and the creation of treaties. The second chapter looks at the archaeological and other available evidence for the history of Umbria before the Roman conquest, and maps the beginnings of the formation of the state through the growth in social complexity, urbanisation and the emergence of cult places.

    ECOMUSEO CAMPELLO SUL CLITUNNO PRESENTAZIONE La delimitazione territoriale dell'Ecomuseo di Campello sul Clitunno ricalca i confini comunali, si estende su una superficie di 50 km2 e comprende numerose frazioni tra cui Acera, Agliano, Campello Alto, Pettino, Pissignano, La Spina. I principali beni di comunità del territorio sono il Tempietto del Clitunno (Patrimonio Mondiale dell’Umanità U.N.E.S.C.O), i castelli medievali di Pissignano e Campello Alto, le Aree S.I.C. – Siti di interesse comunitario delle Fonti del Clitunno, Fosso di Camposolo e Valle di Pettino, il Civico Museo della Civiltà Contadina, il Centro di Documentazione sulla Transumanza e sui Pastori e l’Università Agraria di Pettino. La storia del popolamento umano ha da sempre perseguito un forte processo di formazione identitaria, riconoscendo nel territorio i propri luoghi di centralità condensando nelle pratiche e nelle tradizioni secoli di storia legati al mondo contadino e pastorale. L’Ecomuseo è accreditato dalla Regione Umbria. CARATTERISTICHE AMBIENTALI E STRUTTURA Il territorio dell'Ecomuseo si estende sul versante occidentale della catena montuosa del Serano-Brunette. L’ambiente risulta molto eterogeneo, alternandosi tra la pianura ed il fiume Clitunno (coltivata e sede delle principali infrastrutture), la fascia pedemontana collinare (caratterizzata dalle coltivazioni di olivo, specie arborea simbolo dell'economia locale), l'area montana (quasi interamente ricoperta da bosco dove sono presenti piccoli insediamenti di borghi rurali antichi come Pettino, Acera, La Spina ed Agliano), i prati secondari di montagna (adibiti a pascolo e le conche intermontane come quella di Pettino che vedono la presenza di una limitata agricoltura e la prevalenza di una economia silvo-pastorale).
