Course Name Undergraduate Open PostgraduateUndergraduate courses in CourseOpen Day name Saturday 24 June 2017 Welcome A very warm welcome to our undergraduate Open Day at Brunel University London I am so proud of our university, its courses, staff and facilities and I am delighted to be able to show them to you today. Last year we celebrated our 50th anniversary and since 1966 we’ve achieved great things. As we look forward the challenges might have changed, but our aims are as innovative and ambitious as they always were. We are a leading research-intensive university with excellence, innovation and an entrepreneurial spirit at the heart of everything we do. Choosing a university is an important decision that will set the path for your future life – from the career you follow to the friends you make. It could well be the biggest decision you’ve faced in your life so far and we’re here to help you get it right – for you. All around campus, you will find answers to the many questions I’m sure you have. Our Student Life Zone in the Indoor Athletics Centre is a great place to start your day with information points for our courses as well showing you our accommodation, support services, sports and social life. You can also take a walking tour of our facilities and accommodation with student guides from here. Meet our academic staff and students, see their work and hear detailed Course Talks on each of our programmes from the academic staff you will learn with. We hope we’ve covered everything, but if you have any questions left unanswered, please do ask one of our staff or students who are here to help you in any way they can. I will be welcoming you to Brunel in a series of morning talks in the Eastern Gateway Building auditorium. I very much look forward to seeing you there, and of course welcoming many of you as Brunel students in the near future. My best wishes for an enjoyable day, Professor Julia Buckingham, Vice-Chancellor 3 Places to eat today BRUNEL STORIES Why not visit one of these to help fuel you throughout your busy day. FIND US TODAY – Entertaining From the first week of university life, the Union HAMILTON CENTRE ATRIUM puts on some great events. We cater for all tastes and make Brunel alumna, Ray BLK (English BA, 2015), beat a host of top UK music talent and followed in the footsteps of Adele, Ellie Goulding and Sam Smith to be crowned the winner of the BBC Music Sound of 2017. The singer and rapper from London, who has collaborated with grime star Stormzy, creates edgy R&B music in the same vein as American icons such Lauryn Hill, Mary J Blige and Missy Elliott. Ray BLK’s EP, ‘Havisham’ is inspired by Miss Havisham, the jilted Charles Dickens character in Great Expectations that she learned about during her English Literature degree at Brunel. Although she has been making music for herself since the age of 10, Ray BLK’s only music training came in the form of opera- singing lessons during a short scholarship programme at Brunel. © Hayley Louisa Brown 6 7 The majority of our subject talks take place at 10am and are then repeated at 1pm, so COMMUNICATION AND MEDIA STUDIES there’s plenty of time to fit in other university talks and tours. • Alma's Extraordinary Soulful Voice and Sharply Observed Lyrics Hit
Alma’s extraordinary soulful voice and sharply observed lyrics hit somewhere between Sia and Amy Winehouse. Perhaps understandable the world wants to know where and the how the 22-year-old Finnish powerhouse (currently working with MNEK, Rudimental, Charlie XCX, Sub Focus, Tove Lo, Justin Tranter and 2 Inch Punch) began her career in music. “I don’t think I ever really started,” Alma recalls. “It’s just when I was little, I understood that singing made me feel things. It made me feel safe, it made me feel good, it made me feel better. It’s how I’ve survived everything, cliché as that sounds.” Alma needn’t worry about clichés: with her long, electric-neon hair, baggy punk attire and magnetic attitude she is everything but the stereotypical pop princess. “She looks like a cybergoth reimagining of a young Adele and sounds like Beth Ditto had she been raised on tropical house,” The Observer wrote recently - they hit the nail on the head. Growing up between Helsinki in the winter and Lapland in the summer, Alma sang constantly. “If I was happy, if I was sad, if I was walking alone in the dark and a bit scared,” she says. “It made me feel like I had a shelter around me.” Singing was her secret security blanket —until one summer when her family were driving north for the season. She told her parents that she wanted to sing for them, and they imagined they were in for a rendition of something by the Spice Girls or Destiny’s Child.

RAINMAKERS TWO 36 DARCUS BEESE OBE An Island Life ou sign what makes you excited, what’s different—not what’s in the marketplace now.” That’s Darcus Beese explaining his A&R philosophy in a 2012 interview with The Guardian. His most celebrated signings—Florence + the Machine, Mumford & Sons and, above all, the uniquely gifted Amy Winehouse—make it abundantly clear that this Island Records lifer and current label chieftain walks it like he talks it. During a career spanning more than three decades, Beese has become renowned for finding and nurturing innovative artists whose music has stood apart on the radio and the charts. “Darcus is as passionate today about his artists and team as the day we first met,” Universal Music U.K. chairman/CEO David Joseph said in Music Week last year. “He embodies the maverick spirit which has always set Island apart as a label.” Joseph’s recent comment to HITS was more personal. “If you ever find yourself wondering what words and thoughts are going through his mind,” he mused, with obvi- ous affection, “they will be ‘radical,’ ‘truth,’ ‘culture,’ ‘I’m feeling this,’ ‘I’m not feeling “this,’Y ‘legacy,’ ‘family,’ respect,’ ‘chicken and fries.’ And it’s often a combination of all of these, beautifully blended together.” 36 37 “YOU CUT ME AND I BLEED ISLAND. They decide they have only one option – to return to the city dressed as men.
