Welcome to 82nd Season of the London Majors membership in the Intercounty Baseball League.

Prior to the 2005 season we had hopes and dreams of making it back to the Championship Finals with hopefully a better outcome. Unfortunately it was not to be.

We had a roller coaster type season with lots of highs and lows. The lows were punctuated by not having our Harry Muir with us for most of the season due to a life threatening illness. We are very fortunate to have a healthy Harry back this season as our pitching . The highs were the individual success of our players. We had a great cast of players as evidenced by the number of players selected as League All-Stars. The Majors were represented on the 1st Team All-Star selections by Mike Ambrose at 2nd base, Pete Babcock at 3rd base, Kyle Piwowarczkyk as an outfielder and Kirk Martin as a left handed pitcher for 2nd Team All-Star honours.

This is why baseball and sports in general is so great. You need talent to win games, but you also need the intangibles such as team chemistry and leadership. Fast forward to the end of the 2005 season and we were a .500 team at 18 wins and 18 losses and we bowed out of the playoffs to the Baycats (who went on to win the IBL Championship) in the first round.

We have been through a few changes going into the 2006 season to try and make us successful on the field, but also off the field. I gained a business partner in Roop Chanderdat who I have been friends with now for about 25 years. Roop brings a lot of knowledge of the league through his 12 years of playing in the League with such teams as St. Thomas, Stratford and also as a Majors Alumni. Roop will be looking after the GM role, Field Manager role to go along with his Co Owner duties. I think this will be the stability that we need to be successful in the long term and if the off season recruitment is any indicator then we should see some more quality players helping us to reach our goal of getting back to the finals.

I would like to thank all of our sponsors, volunteers, staff, players, members of the media and our fans who make our season possible. It is great to have all of you out to our games and we want you to know that we appreciate your support.

THE LONDON MAJORS WOULD LIKE TO WELCOME YOU TO !

Each year I look forward to spring and more importantly the start of another baseball season. This year, 2006, will be my first year in a long time not putting on the uniform as a player. Since becoming a co-owner of the Majors in September 2005,1 have decided to hand up the spikes and start a new chapter in my baseball career.

There are many new challenges ahead for both myself and the organization. I have assumed both the General Manager and Field Manager’s duties for the 2006 season. It has been a very busy off-season trying to recruit and assemble a competitive team of quality individuals. We have had good success and I have put together a roster that will be very competitive. I have stressed three main things to all of our players; HARDWORK, DEDICATION & RESPECT and we believe this is the foundation for a successful organization.

Our goal is provide the players with a good environment so they can be successful and this should lead us to our goal which is to provide London with a Championship Team.

Our off-field planning has also been challenging and at the same time very exciting. We have had a successful sponsorship drive and we hope to continue to build on our growing base of partners. We are still very active with supporting various local charities and we are strong believers in helping out in our community.

To our fans, I want to let them know we will provide them with an exciting and competitive team and I want to thank them for their continued support. For the general public please come out to the park and give our organization a chance to show you a wonderful family experience at Labatt Park.

I would like to thank all our staff and volunteers for their time and effort. Without them there no way we can play ball.

Enjoy the 2006 Season! Go Majors!

By BRUCE HUFF There is no two ways about it. Picturesque Labatt Park hard by the mighty Thames and North America’s oldest continuously-operating ball park, is the perfect site for the Intercounty Baseball League’s new Hall of Fame.

The plan is to locate the proposed IBL Hall under the main grandstand. Of course, such a project will require the co-operation of the City, Tourism London, and Heritage/Landmarks London in addition to support from the Intercounty and the London Majors.

An ambitious undertaking, perhaps, but doable and an ad hoc steering committee consisting of this writer, sports historian Stephen Harding, and Barry Wells, founder of the Friends of Labatt Park, has taken the first steps in putting the wheels in motion.

The IBL, which has been around since 1919, will hold its first induction of candidates during a ceremony at the annual All-Star Game on July 10 in Barrie. And you can expect the Majors will be well represented.

On the early nomination list were Canadian Baseball hall-of-famers , Tom (Tim) Burgess, Fergie Jenkins and Ron Stead, the most recent inductee. Also making the list was everybody’s favourite Stan (Gabby) Anderson, evergreen Arden Eddie, Tommy White, Russ Evon, Mike Kilkenny, Wayne (Dog) Fenlon, Rolf Scheel, Jon Owen, Ted Earley, Harry Fisher, John Gillies and Norm Aldridge.

And because a difference of opinion makes a horse race, there will be great wailing and knashing of teeth over some obvious names that have been overlooked. But hey, it’s a beginning and Len Hannam and Troy May of Brantford are to be congratulated for kick-starting the project.

Anybody can make a nomination in the categories for players, builders and umpires (pre modern before 1958 and post-modern after ‘58). Deadline will be March 1 of every year.

Nomination forms are available by contacting the IBL Hall of Fame, 32 The Strand Ave., Brantford ON N3R 1Z3, telephone (519) 753-1463 or e-mail [email protected].

And here’s best wishes to Scott Dart, Roop Chanderat and the Majors. May they have a hall-of-fame type of season of their own.

(Bruce Huff’s Off The Cuff column appears in several Ontario publications. He is also chairman of the London Sports Hall of Fame).

George C. (Mooney) Gibson (July 22,1880 - Jan 25,1967)

George Gibson was a young Canadian bricklayer-homebuilder turned who enjoyed a lengthy career as both a player with ’s and New York Giants and as a manager for Pittsburgh and the .

Gibson was also a nephew of William Southam, founder of Southam Newspapers in 1904 and brother of Richard Southam, manager of the baseball team in 1877.

The highlight of Gibson’s playing career was winning the with Pittsburgh in 1909 by beating ’s Detroit Tigers. Arriving back at the train station of his hometown of London, Ontario after winning the World Series, Gibson found 5,000 cheering fans to greet him. At the time, the population of London was approximately 35,000.

On September 9,1909, Mooney caught his 112th consecutive game, breaking Chief Zimmer’s 1890 record. Gibson’s streak came to an end at 140 consecutive games behind the plate.

In 1921, Gibson, as manager of Pittsburgh, led the Pirates to three first-division finishes.

Born a stone’s throw away from Tecumseh Park (today’s Labatt Memorial Park) in London West, Gibson gained the nickname, “Mooney,” early in his career due to his round, moon-like face. Today, there is a commemorative plaque prominently displayed at the entrance to the main grandstand at Labatt Park in Gibson’s honour.

For the past 11 years, Roop Chanderdat has split his time between playing in the Intercounty Baseball League and owning a successful industrial health and safety company. For a lot longer than that — since about the time he became a teenager — Roop has been friends with Scott Dart, for the past two years, owner of the London Majors.

With that kind of personal and professional background its not surprising Roop made the ideal partner for Scott who recently sold 50 per cent of the franchise to his long-time friend. “Minutes. The deal really took minutes to put together. Scott and I do a lot of business together, we’re friends, have been for years. We have the same lawyer. That really made this an easy deal to do,” Roop says. “The plan all along was for me to become involved after my playing career was over. So now we are partners, 50-50.”

For Scott, the addition of Roop - who played six seasons with the Majors before finishing his career last season in Stratford — is a big step forward for the future success of the organization. “With him buying in we are finishing one chapter and starting a new one. Some people assumed Roop was a part of this all along, he wasn’t, but he was someone I would turn to for advice,” Scott says. “Our plan all along was for him to become involved when he was done playing. It was not a question of was he going to come on board, but when he was.” As for why Roop was the right person to form a partnership with, Scott says their background had a lot to do with it, but so too does their shared feelings on everything from business to baseball.

When it comes to figuring out their roles within the new organization, Roop says he knows where he can help the Majors the most. “My focus is on-field About 70 per cent of my role is focused in that direction. That’s why I’ve taken on the role of general manager,” Roop says. “I know the coaching side, the managing, the player movement side.

From his perspective, Roop says while Scott has done a tremendous job the first two years, his addition will further strengthen an already successful operation.

“Scott did a tremendous job. He was owner, gm, even the equipment guy. He did a tremendous job. Roop says. “My being here, adds to the stability of the management. As someone looking over baseball operations; I can focus on a lot of the game-day stuff.”

Harry Muir, who faced life-threatening medical problems last season is back in good health and is even working part-time. However, his position within the team is one Roop says is still being discussed.

“Harry will be back, there’s no question. Whether it’s as manager or as pitching coach, we’re talking about that. He fits in this organization somewhere, no question,” Roop says.
