Le Guin's Farthest Shore and Tehanu Len Hatfield In literature as in "real life," women, children, and animals are the obscure matter upon which Civilization erects itself, phallologically. That they are Other is (vide Lacan et al.) the foundation of language, the Father Tongue. By climbing up into his head and shutting out every voice but his own, "Civilized Man" has gone deaf. He can't hear the wolf calling him brother—not Master, but brother. He can't hear the earth calling him child—not Father, but son. He hears only his own words making up the world. He can't hear the animals, they have nothing to say. Children babble, and have to be taught how to climb up into their heads and shut the doors of perception. No use teaching woman at all, they talk all the time, of course, but never say anything. This is the myth of Civilization, embodied in monotheisms which assign soul to Man alone. Le Guin presents the theme of selfhood, of maturity, and of identity through the character heroes of Ged and Arren. Ofthese two, Ged experiences the quest for selfhood on two levels: first, from boy to manhood, and then from manhood to the awareness of death. Both novels deal with the struggle to create, which is primarily a struggle with self, with one's own powers, and with the need to control these powers and their consequences. -

Le Guin was an American author. she was best known for her works of speculative fiction, including the science fiction works sets in the Hainish Universe and the fantasy series of Earth Sea. She began writing full time in the 1950s and achieved major critical and commercial success with A Wizard of Earth Sea (1968). For the latter volume Le Guin won both the Hugo and Nebula awards for best novel, becoming the first woman to do so. This research paper deals with the self-identity in the maturation of fantasy super-hero Ged, or sparrow hawk, the title character. Over the course of the novel, he learns the true meaning of Wizardry its limits as well as its capabilities. One of the main attractions of the novel, in addition to Ged himself, the fantasy and the adventure, is Le Guin’s skill at showing the friendships that make Ged’s success and mistakes seem so important. Distressing Damsels: Sir Gawain and the Green Knight as a Loathly Lady Tale By Lauren Chochinov A Thesis submitted to the Faculty of Graduate Studies of The University of Manitoba In partial fulfillment of the requirements of the degree of MASTER OF ARTS Department of English University of Manitoba Winnipeg, Manitoba Copyright © 2010 by Lauren Chochinov i Abstract At the end of Sir Gawain and the Green Knight, when Bertilak de Hautdesert reveals Morgan le Fay’s involvement in Gawain’s quest, the Pearl Poet introduces a difficult problem for scholars and students of the text. Morgan appears out of nowhere, and it is difficult to understand the poet’s intentions for including her so late in his narrative. The premise for this thesis is that the loathly lady motif helps explain Morgan’s appearance and Gawain’s symbolic importance in the poem. Through a study of the loathly lady motif, I argue it is possible that the Pearl Poet was using certain aspects of the motif to inform his story. Chapter one of this thesis will focus on the origins of the loathly lady motif and the literary origins of Morgan le Fay. In order to understand the connotations of the loathly lady stories, it is important to study both the Irish tales and the later English versions of the motif. My study of Morgan will trace her beginnings as a pagan healer goddess to her later variations in French and Middle English literature. The second chapter will discuss the influential women in Sir Gawain and the Green Knight and their specific importance to the text. -

View metadata, citation and similar papers at core.ac.uk brought to you by CORE provided by Online Research @ Cardiff Intertextuality, Manipulation and Propaganda: Reworking the Arthurian Legend in Contemporary Spanish Literature Cecilia Antoinette Morgan Thesis submitted to Cardiff University in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy December 2019 i Summary Whereas the historicity of King Arthur has roundly been contested in academic circles, as Higham (2002) says, the idea of a fifth or sixth-century British king called Arthur and the Golden Age of peace and prosperity that accompanied his reign has endured in Western culture for over a thousand years. When studying any Arthurian text, medieval or modern, it is essential to try and understand the nature and purpose of that text as well as the political and cultural context at the time of textual production and consumption. This is because as the Arthurian story has been transformed and adapted by authors it has consistently been used as an agent of political and cultural propaganda to deliver a particular message that is relevant for the contemporary age in which the reworked text is written. In this way, the new text is given a fresh emphasis, ideological purpose and the power to persuade or manipulate contemporary readers to change the present. This thesis examines this manipulative potential of the legend in two contemporary Spanish novels El rapto del Santo Grial (1984) by Paloma Díaz-Mas and Artorius (2006) by César Vidal. The thesis contends that the intentional, creative and strategic use of intertextuality by these authors, characterised by parody, irony and allegory, acts to manipulate the reader into a desired reading of their texts, thus allowing them a platform to deliver their ideological views and personal concerns about contemporary Spanish society at the times the novels were written. -

K. Le Guin is a fantasy work in Western literature that shines with ostentatiously idiosyncratic sparks of Taoist philosophies. Resorting to Taoism (also translated as Daoism) and its representative work Tao Te Ching, this article aims at exploring the Earthsea magic, a ubiquitous motif in fantasy, with Taoist thoughts and theories including the law of relativity, harmonious dialectics, and equilibrium. This article reconstructs the magical Earthsea world within a Taoist framework and reveals the Taoist connotations of magic. Finally, this article concludes that, radically distinct from its traditional image, magic in Earthsea serves to heal the physical, mental, and spiritual wound of separation; set up harmony of the opposites in binaries; and preserve the delicate equilibrium insusceptible to the ravages of time. Eliot's The Waste Land Submitted by: Iman Khider Salman Supervised By: Dr. Suhair Nafii 2018 Abstract T.S. Eliot is one of the greatest authors of modern age. His literary works that deal with the aftermath of the war enabled him to get the noble prize in literature since they embody the reality of modern society after the war. This paper contains two sections. The first section consists of an introduction about the Holy Grail, the quest for the Holy Grail through history and literary adaptation of the Holy Grail. Section two consists of T.S.Eliot‘s life and work , an introduction to Eliot‘s The Waste Land, the sources of the legend story of the Holy Grail, and the Grail quest in T.S. Eliot‘s The Waste Land in which shows how Eliot uses this underlying myth as a salvation. The quest for the Holy Grail has been found in the Arthurian stories. These stories belong to the time before the appearance of Christianity in Europe. Eliot invites this legend to give the reader a key to link the story of the Holy Grail with the wasteland in post- world war I. The conclusion sums up the finding of the study where the essential connection between the significance of the legend and T. S. Eliot‘s theme of the poem.
