Serra Morena Geo Serra Morena Geo Serra Morena Geo Serra Morena Geo Serra Morena presents a programme for secondary school and university geology students who wish to learn more about the Ivrea Zone. The Ivrea Zone, in the northwest Italian region of Piedmont, offers interesting opportunities for geological studies. Evidence of continental collision and consequent geological faults are to be found in the Periadriatic Seam, known as the Insubric Line in its more westerly extension, and in the numerous outcrops of granulite basement rocks, schist, and many other interesting specimens. THE MORAINIC AMPHITHEATRE OF IVREA Marine sediments and fossils bear witness to when the Adriatic sea covered the plain of the river Po, during the Cenozoic age. The relief surrounding Ivrea, known locally as the Morainic Amphitheatre of Ivrea, is the result of the buildup of debris deposited by the glaciers of several ice ages during the Quaternary period. Other features of interest include evidence of river capture, numerous erratic boulders, whaleback ridges, intermoraine lakes, swamps and peat bogs. Programme • Field studies of geological points of interest around the Ivrea Zone and in the Morainic Amphitheatre of Ivrea, accompanied by a geologist. • Choice of excursions: crosscountry cycling; visit to the Museum of the Alps at Bard in the Aosta valley, visit to the National Museum of Cinema in Turin. Gianotti <[email protected]> ABSTRACT: The Ivrea Morainic Amphitheatre (IMA) is the main evidence of Quaternary glaciations in the Dora Baltea basin (NW Italy). This end moraine system forms a 500 km2 wide complex of lateral and terminal moraines and kame terraces, dated from the end of the Early Pleistocene (on palaeomagnetic basis) to the end of the Late Pleistocene (14C radiometric and 10Be exposure ages). A synthesis of the state of the art on the IMA stratigraphy is presented, based on the previous literature and reinterpreted in the light of new surveys and dating. Some embedded palaeosols and palustrine deposits within the glacigenic sequences, interpretable the first as interglacial layers and the latter as interglacial or interstadial layers, crop out along stream incisions cutting the IMA outer and inner edges or were sampled through boreholes (Alice Superiore and Torre Canavese cores). The top of the deposits shows different degrees of weathering and they can be distinguished into three pedogroups based on the hue index color of the soil horizons.
