During the first National Moth Week, which took place in July 2012, people in over 300 locations worldwide observed and documented the presence of moths in various habitats. This article describes the project’s goals and the methods used to achieve those goals. A summary of outreach activities and data collection is presented. Keywords Moth; Lepidoptera; Citizen Science; National Moth Week Introduction Scientific contributions by non-professionals are well documented, particularly in fields of study where observation is important, such as archaeology, astronomy, and natural history (Silvertown, 2009). In Entomology there is also a vast body of research and publications that utilize data and observations collected by non-professionals (citi- zen scientists) (ECLS 2012; Miller, 1986; Kristensen et al., 2007). Moth biodiversity is remarkably high as these insects are one of the most successful lineages of organisms on earth (Kristensen et al., 2007, Schweitzer et al., 2011). As a result of ongoing survey efforts, estimates of the number of species approximate 150,000 (Arnett, 2000, van Nieukerken et al., 2011) to possibly as many as 500,000 (Kristensen et al., 2007). -

A new species, Helerarhabdùis hepialius sp. n., recovered from ghost moth caterpillars (Hepialis cali/amieus) in Bodega Bay, California, USA is herein described and illustrated. This is the eighth species in the genus Helerorhabdùis and is characterized by the morphology of the spicules, gubernaculum, the female's tail, and ratios E and F of the infective juveniles. Information on its bionomics is provided. Species numbers and composition of the insect fauna occurring on trees and shrubs were studied in dry eucalypt forests in eastern Tasmania over nine years. In all, 1164 named and putative species representing 17 orders and 157 families were collected. The bulk of the species belonged to the orders Coleoptera (28%), Hymenoptera (25%), Hemiptera (18%), Lepidoptera (14%) and Diptera (10%). Of the species collected, 388 -- about one-third -- were identified at least to genus or species level. These included 21 named species not previously listed in the Tasmanian insect fauna and 90 undescribed species. A list of 22 host plants for 171 insect species was compiled from records of 132 insect species observed feeding during the study and from previous records ofinsect/host plant associations for 39 insect species found on the study plots. Most insects were feeding on eucalypts (127 insect species) and acacias (38 species). The most widely distributed and commonly collected species were several well-known pests ofeucalypts: Gonipterus scutellatus (Coleoptera: Curculionidae), Uraba lugens (Lepidoptera: N octuidae), Amorbus obscuricornis (Hemiptera: Coreidae), Chaetophyes compacta (Hemiptera: Machaerotidae) and Eriococcus coriaceous(Hemiptera: Eriococcidae). -
Insects Infesting Pastures in New Zealand
INSECTS INFESTING PAS’iU~ES : IN NEW ZEALAND By L. J. DUMBLETON, Senior Entomologist, Entomological Research Station, Department of Scientific and Industrial Research, Nelson. Grassland farming is the basis of our primary production and insetit pests constitute one of the factors which limit or decrease that production. A survey of the relative importance of different pest species and of the means available for their control should serve a useful purpose. Such a stocktaking will help in comparing the pasture pest situation in New Zealand with that in other countries, and in in- dicating some of the overseas pests whose accidental establishment in New Zealand could be potentially very serious. THE EXISTING PESTS OF PASTURES AND. PASTURE PLANTS It is instructive to consider first the. origin of the pests, whether native or introduced, and then under each of these headings to class the pests as either general or omniverous feeders, or as specialised feeders. In endeavouring to assess the relative importance of pest species it must be remembered that there is ; no absolute point (% of area affected or “/o of crop lost) at which insect damage becomes an economii: loss. This will vary .with circumstances such as stocking and season. In the case of the major pests it is fairly easy to rate them on the basis of mtensity of damage, frequency of damage, and area of pasture affected. In the case of insects affecting seed pro- duction the actual loss is difficult to determine, since so many factors affect seed setting. NATIVE PESTS As would be expected; seeing that the main pas- ture plants are introduced species, the native-pests are all. -

Humber Insect Mycologist and Curator, ARSEF February 2014 The previous (2007) version of this introductory material for ARSEF catalogs sought to explain some of the phylogenetical rationale for major changes to the taxonomy of many key fungal entomopathogens, especially those involving some key conidial and sexual genera of the ascomycete order Hypocreales. Phylogenetic revisions of the taxonomies of entomopathogenic fungi continued to appear, and the results of these revisions are reflected in the ARSEF catalog as quickly and completely as we can do so. As many of people dealing with entomopathogenic fungi are already aware, there has been one still recent event that has a more far-reaching and pervasive influence whose magnitude still remains to be fully appreciated, but that leaves much of the mycological world (including insect mycology) semiparalyzed by uncertainty and worried about the extent and impacts of changes that still remain unformalized and, hence, a continuing subject for speculation and prediction. -

The Complete Mitochondrial Genomes of Two Ghost Moths, Thitarodes

BMC Genomics 2012, 13:276 http://www.biomedcentral.com/1471-2164/13/276 RESEARCH ARTICLE Open Access The complete mitochondrial genomes of two ghost moths, Thitarodes renzhiensis and Thitarodes yunnanensis: the ancestral gene arrangement in Lepidoptera Yong-Qiang Cao1,2†, Chuan Ma3†, Ji-Yue Chen1 and Da-Rong Yang1* Abstract Background: Lepidoptera encompasses more than 160,000 described species that have been classified into 45–48 superfamilies. The previously determined Lepidoptera mitochondrial genomes (mitogenomes) are limited to six superfamilies of the lineage Ditrysia. Compared with the ancestral insect gene order, these mitogenomes all contain a tRNA rearrangement. To gain new insights into Lepidoptera mitogenome evolution, we sequenced the mitogenomes of two ghost moths that belong to the non-ditrysian lineage Hepialoidea and conducted a comparative mitogenomic analysis across Lepidoptera. Results: The mitogenomes of Thitarodes renzhiensis and T. yunnanensis are 16,173 bp and 15,816 bp long with an A + T content of 81.28 % and 82.34 %, respectively. Both mitogenomes include 13 protein-coding genes, 22 transfer RNA genes, 2 ribosomal RNA genes, and the A + T-rich region. Different tandem repeats in the A + T-rich region mainly account for the size difference between the two mitogenomes. All the protein-coding genes start with typical mitochondrial initiation codons, except for cox1 (CGA) and nad1 (TTG) in both mitogenomes. The anticodon of trnS(AGN) in T. renzhiensis and T. yunnanensis is UCU instead of the mostly used GCU in other sequenced Lepidoptera mitogenomes. The 1,584-bp sequence from rrnS to nad2 was also determined for an unspecified ghost moth (Thitarodes sp.), which has no repetitive sequence in the A + T-rich region.
