Epochal milestone for Ismaili Muslims – History in making His Highness the Aga Khan’s Diamond Jubilee on 11 July 2018 – Lisbon On 11 July 2018, some 66,000 Ismaili Muslims came to Lisbon to pay Homage to their Imam6, His Highness the Aga Khan. They all participated and prayed in a religious congregation for blessings, prayers, & His guidance. This is called a Deedar1. This day marked the end of the Diamond jubilee, which was also celebrated with events exhibitions, music & dancing. This is called the Darbar2 H.H. The Aga Khan asked all his community to “work together, build together, come together within the countries, across frontiers, create capacity, protect yourselves from risks. So that future generations of the Jamat are ensured of a quality of life, which you and I would wish for them” This, was a very special and momentous day in the life and history of all Ismailis who came, and for every one of the more than 15 million Ismailis, worldwide The following makes this a historic milestone, into an epochal day for Ismaili Muslims; • Mawlana Hazar Imam6 gave Deedar1 to the congregation of about 66,000, with His Firmans5 • The global Seat-Dewan4 of the Ismaili Imamat was formally ordained • H.H. The Aga Khan made a speech in Parliament12 • President of Portugal joined the religious congregation (Deedar1) with Mawlana Hazar Imam. Know the Persian sources of Maratha history. 1.1 INTRODUCTION The history of Marathas can be best studied with the help of first hand source material like Bakhars, State papers, court Histories, Chronicles and accounts of contemporary travelers, who came to India and made observations of Maharashtra during the period of Marathas. The Maratha scholars and historians had worked hard to construct the history of the land and people of Maharashtra. Among such scholars people like Kashinath Sane, Rajwade, Khare and Parasnis were well known luminaries in this field of history writing of Maratha. Kashinath Sane published a mass of original material like Bakhars, Sanads, letters and other state papers in his journal Kavyetihas Samgraha for more eleven years during the nineteenth century. Marks 100 Number of Papers One RATIONALE History is the scientific study of human beings and the evolution of human society in point of time and in different ages. As such it occupies all important place in the school curricu- lum. It is, therefore, taught as a general subject forming a part of Social Science both at the Middle and the Secondary Stages. At the Middle Stage, entire Indian History is covered, while at the Secondary Stage, the land marks in the development of human society are taught. At the Senior Secondary Stage, History becomes an elective subject. Its main thrust is to bridge the gap between the presence of change-oriented technologies of today and the con- tinuity of our cultural tradition so as to ensure that the coming generation will represent the fine synthesis between change and continuity. It is, therefore, deemed essential to take up the entire Indian History from the Ancient to the Modem period for Senior Secondary Stage. The rationale for taking up the teaching of History at this stage is : 1. to promote an understanding of the major stages in the evolution of Indian society through the ages. 2. to develop an understanding of the historical forces responsible for the evolution of Indian society in the Ancient, Medieval and Modem times. 3. to develop an appreciation of (i) the diverse cultural and social systems of the people living indifferent parts of the country. The Position of Marathas in 1798 A.D. The Marathas had been split up into a loose confederacy. At the head of the Maratha empire was Raja of Sitara. His power had been seized by the Peshwa Baji Rao II was the Peshwa at this time. He became Peshwa at the young age of twenty one in December, 1776 A.D. He had the support of Nana Pharnvis who had secured approval of Bhonsle, Holkar and Sindhia. He was destined to be the last Peshwa. He loved power without possessing necessary courage to retain it. He was enamoured of authority, but was too lazy to exercise it. He enjoyed the company of low and mean companions who praised him to the skies. He was extremely cunning, vindictive and his sense of revenge. His fondness for wine and women knew no limits. Such is the character sketch drawn by his contemporary Elphinstone. Baji Rao I was a weak man and the real power was exercised by Nana Pharnvis, Prime Minister. Though Nana was a very capable ruler and statesman, yet about the close of his life he had lost that ability. Unfortunately, the Peshwa also did not give him full support. Daulat Rao Sindhia was anxious to occupy Nana's position. He lent a force under a French Commander to Poona in December, 1797 A.D. Nana Pharnvis was defeated and imprisoned in the fort of Ahmadnagar. -

Miceli** Abstract: Throughout history, religious and political authorities have had a mysterious attraction to each other. Rulers have established state religions and adopted laws with religious origins, sometimes even claiming to have divine powers. We propose a political economy approach to theocracy, centered on the legitimizing relationship between religious and political authorities. Making standard assumptions about the motivations of these authorities, we identify the factors favoring the emergence of theocracy, such as the organization of the religion market, monotheism vs. polytheism, and strength of the ruler. We use two sets of data to test the implications of the model. We first use a unique data set that includes information on over three hundred polities that have been observed throughout history. We also use recently available cross-country data on the relationship between religious and political authorities to examine these issues in current societies. The results provide strong empirical support for our arguments about why in some states religious and political authorities have maintained independence, while in others they have integrated into a single entity. Grand Battery Battles in India Part One The Second Anglo-Maratha War The war started as a result of faction fighting in the Maratha Confederacy. Officially, Baji Rao II was the head of the Marathas, but he was under challenge from Doulut Rao Sindhia (Gwalior) and Jaswant Rao Holkar (Indore). Other leaders also fancied their chances including Gaekwar and Ragogee Bhonsla. A civil war broke out which led to the defeat of Baji Rao II’s forces at the Battle of Poona on October 25 1802. He fled into exile under the protection of the British, subsequently signing the Treaty of Bassein in which he ceded territory to the British and agreed to have no external dealings with other powers (notably the French). Wellesley was then determined to support Baji Rao II’s claim to the throne and re-installed him at Poona on May 13 1803. Negotiations opened with the leading contenders for the throne, but with no breakthrough in sight, Wellesley moved against the combined forces of Sindhia and the Raja of Berar. The two Maratha armies were a considerable force to be reckoned with. The Raja of Berar could muster around 10,500 regular infantry and upwards of 40,000 other troops. The Scindia army was around 35,000 strong and commanded by the Hanoverian Pohlmann. Wellesley mustered two armies of his own. In the north was a force under General Lake and in the south a combined force under Wellesley himself. His army consisted of some 11,000 troops, supported by the Hyderabad Contingent of 9,400 and around 5,000 light horse (Mysore and Maratha allies). -

The dissertation is approximately 10,000 words in length.’ 1 Abstract The period of British colonialism and the expansion of British influence in India occurred over a number of years. This research paper focuses primarily on the period from 1798 to 1805, with particular reference to the period of conflict in 1803. While many aspects of this period are well known, a number of less well recognised influences have had considerable impact on the capacity for British expansionism. This research paper examines the influence of the second Anglo-Mahratta wars, and in particular of the simultaneous campaigns of General Lake and Arthur Wellesley, primarily against Dawlut Rao Scindia and Bhonsla, Rajah of Berar. These campaigns have particular political and military significance, and mark a change in Anglo-Indian relations. The military strategies, intentions and outcomes of these are discussed, and recognition given to the innovations in regard to logistics and warfare. These elements were central to the expansion of British influence as they resulted in both the acceptance of the British as a great martial power, and helped to create a myth of the invincibility of British arms. -

STUDY MATERIAL DEPARTMENT OF HISTORY/P.G SEM-II/CC-IX Integration of Princely States into Indian Union Important Points Anuradha Jaiswal • In colonial India, nearly 40 percent of the territory was occupied by fifty- six small and large states ruled by the princes who enjoyed varying degrees of autonomy under the system of British paramountcy. British power protected them from their own people as also external aggression so long as they followed British diktats. • In 1947 the future of the princely states once the British left became the matter of concern. Many of the larger princely states began to dream of independence. They got an encouragement from M.A Jinnah who publicly declared on 18 June 1947 that the ‘States would be independent sovereign States on the termination of paramountcy, and where ‘free to remain independent if they so desired’. • The nationalist leaders rejected the claim of any state to independence and repeatedly declared that independence for a princely state was not an option – the only option being whether the state would accede to India or Pakistan, on the basis of its territory and wishes of the people. • By signing instruments of accession to join the Indian Union, the princes had only surrendered their power on three subjects, defence, foreign affairs and communications and had thereby retained some residual powers of governance. • It was the diplomacy and persuasion used by Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, that hundreds of princely states integrated with Indian Union in two stages. Some princely states had shown wisdom and realism and patriotism and had joined the Constituent Assembly in April 1947.
