Islander September 2014 Technology Update “It’s August and it’s hot! Damn hot! Real hot!” so said one of my favourite actors, Robin Williams in Good Morning Vietnam. Just heard about his sad death - what a tragic loss of a fantastic talent. Apart from being hot in August, it’s always a bit dry for any new technology. However, I came across a new car that is not only hot but is expected to be a technical marvel. Bugatti plans a hybrid successor to the Veyron Bugatti insiders are talking about the successor to the legendary Editorial Technical Veyron. The car will reportedly use a hybrid powertrain to make it quicker and faster than any version of the Veyron, including the world record-breaking Super Sport. Autocar reports that this next- generation hyper car will be capable of flipping the last two digits of the Veyron's 268 mph (431km/h) world record to 286 mph. Bugatti's computer simulations suggest that the new car will also be quicker, launching to 62 mph (100 km/h) in 2.3 seconds! They also suggest that they will add nearly 300 hp, upping the total system output to close to 1,500 hp. To achieve that huge power output, Bugatti plans to develop a hybrid power train along the same lines as its competitors McLaren and Ferrari. Bugatti is still experimenting with multiple prototype layouts, but indications are that it will task an electric drive with assisting an engine based on the Veyron's quad-turbo 8.0-liter W16. It's not clear how much that electric unit will improve upon the Veyron's extraordinarily high fuel consumption of 10 mpg but it’s pretty certain to be similar. Autocar road test editor Matt Prior made a very good point. "We’re well into the realms of academia now. Making a road car that can do 286 mph is one thing; making a road car do it on road tyres is rather more difficult." Given that the car is not even developed yet, the manufacturers and their tyre partners have some time to figure it all out before putting the cars to the test. The Veyron successor will go on sale reportedly in 2016. MINI Superleggera™ Vision – timeless beauty that blends the traditional with the modern. Have you seen what the Germans have done with Italian design to create a fantastic looking concept open-top two seat Mini? It will be electric- powered like the MiniE - if they decide to build it. Technical Editorial Technical 1,155 new satellites to be launched by 2023. Euroconsult estimates that between 2014 and 2023, a total of 1,155 satellites will be manufactured and orbited, worth a collective total of $248 billion. The report, “Satellites to be Built & Launched,” attributes only 25 percent of this projected business to commercial space companies, with the majority, 75 percent, coming from government programs. O3b successfully launch and begin service with their full initial constellation. O3b Networks, who are launching new Medium Earth Orbiting (MEO) satellites, have begun on-orbit testing and their customers are already trialling the service. The latest four satellites, launched July 10th, 2014, doubled O3b’s constellation and raised the company to the level of a global operator. The O3b constellation provides huge bandwidth with much reduced latency when compared to geostationary satellites. As the satellites are orbiting, the ground or maritime installation needs to track the satellite. On a vessel, using current technology, three 2+m tracking antennas are required. Two of the three track the satellite and the third is in position as a backup. Clearly the scale of this installation prohibits the use on any but the largest yachts. However, our colleagues at Kymeta, who are developing the flat panel satellite antenna will be demonstrating later this year their antenna working with O3b. This will reduce the amount of ground and vessel real estate needed, thus opening up the possibilities of using this service to smaller vessels.
