Having celebrated Shackleton’s British Antarctic (Nimrod) Expedition, courtesy of the ‘Matrix Shackleton Centenary Expedition’, in 2008/9, we now turn our attention to the events of 1910/12. This was a period when 3 very extraordinary and ambitious men (Amundsen, Scott and Mawson) headed south, to a mixture of acclaim and tragedy. A little later (in 2014) we will be celebrating Sir Ernest’s ‘crowning glory’ –the Centenary of the Imperial Trans-Antarctic (Endurance) Expedition 1914/17. Shackleton failed in his main objective (to be the first to cross from one side of Antarctica to the other). He even failed to commence his land journey from the Weddell Sea coast to Ross Island. However, the rescue of his entire team from the ice and extreme cold (made possible by the remarkable voyage of the James Caird and the first crossing of South Georgia’s interior) was a remarkable feat and is the reason why most of us revere our polar hero and choose to be members of this Society. For all the alleged shenanigans between Scott and Shackleton, it would be a travesty if ‘Number Six’ failed to honour Captain Scott’s remarkable achievements - in particular, the important geographical and scientific work carried out on the Discovery and Terra Nova expeditions (1901-3 and 1910-12 respectively).

Australia ICOMOS 2007 Conference Cairns 19 – 21 July 2007 Abstract The Heroic Era explorer huts in the Ross Dependency of Antarctica are located in one of the most remote and environmentally harsh areas in the world. As unique tangible evidence of world exploration and human endurance, these huts are exceptionally special, but showing the signs of environmental and human impact. International Conservation Services (ICS) have been working with the Antarctic Heritage Trust, New Zealand (AHT) for the last 10 years. ICS’s main role is providing the conservation expertise required to preserve the movable heritage items, within and around four expedition bases, amounting to many thousands of items. In 2006, the AHT achieved a world first: to support a materials conservation team in Antarctica year round, to progress the preservation program. Extreme climate and logistical issues mean managerial and technical issues are challenging to resolve. Together, ICS and the AHT have developed mobile laboratories, conservation treatment protocols, material testing programs, disaster preparedness plans and preventive conservation strategies for the movable heritage items associated with these sites. Brook2 Reconstruction of atmospheric CO2 during times of past abrupt climate change may help us better understand climate-carbon cycle feedbacks. Previous ice core studies reveal simultaneous increases in atmospheric CO2 and Antarctic temperature during times when Greenland and the northern hemisphere experienced very long, cold stadial conditions during the last ice age. Whether this relationship extends to all of the numerous stadial events in the Greenland ice core record has not been clear. Here we present a high-resolution record of atmospheric CO2 from the Siple Dome ice core, Antarctica for part of the last ice age.
