This year, we are expanding our Summer Festival to include three operas over a three and a half week period, from July 2nd to 26th, while also adding a wide range of extra concerts throughout June and July to bring an incredible variety of opera and song to Saratoga Springs. The season includes three operas that couldn’t be more different. La Cenerentola (Cinderella) is a bubbling comedy by Rossini that features virtuoso singing to impress the most passionate opera lovers, and is also an ideal introduction to opera for family audiences. Our presentation of Purcell’s Dido and Aeneas will be our first site-specific production, presented outside under the stars, in partnership with the National Museum of Dance. The world-premiere of The Long Walk, based on the critically acclaimed memoir of war and homecoming by Brian Castner, marks a reaffirmed commitment to the inclusion of contemporary American opera as a regular part of our programming. While Opera Saratoga has produced 33 works by American composers in its history (5 of which have been world-premieres), The Long Walk, commissioned by American Lyric Theater from composer Jeremy Howard Beck and librettist Stephanie Fleischmann, will be the first world-premiere for the Company in 27 years! The guest artists joining us this season are truly extraordinary. They include artists who are performing leading roles at the world’s great opera houses, including The Metropolitan Opera, The Paris Opera and The Vienna Staatsoper… but there is nowhere else that you can enjoy them in such intimate and beautiful settings than Opera Saratoga.     NOTE FROM NICOLE Dear Friends, This world premiere of Today It Rains marks a true milestone for Opera Parallèle, our first full scale commissioned work. This production embodies the spirit in which OP was founded, to work in ‘parallel’ with great artists and our community. Collaboration is at the heart of what we do and I believe that a positive collaborative experience can elevate a production to a whole new level. Working with Laura, Mark, Kimberly, and the rest of the creative team over the last three years has been a truly wonderful experience—I’m sure you will see this translated onto the stage. I have been humbled by the opportunity to bring the story of Georgia O’Keeffe to the operatic stage. Discovering just how influential and groundbreaking she was as an artist and as a woman has heightened my awareness of the privilege of being a female artistic leader. In particular I’m so pleased we are able to create this work with a brilliant female composer and many female creatives. This trailblazing spirit also inspired OP to celebrate women in the Bay Area who, like O’Keeffe, are breaking the mold, defying expectations, and pushing the boundaries of their field.     Houston Grand Opera opens 2017–18 season in the George R. Brown Convention Center with Verdi’s La traviata (Oct. 20) and Handel’s Julius Caesar (Oct. 27) Houston, October 10, 2017— Houston Grand Opera will open its 63rd season with a new production of Verdi’s most romantic opera, La traviata, October 20–November 11 in the new HGO Resilience Theater at the George R. Brown Convention Center in downtown Houston. Handel’s Julius Caesar, a Baroque opera reset in the golden age of 1930s Hollywood, opens the following week and runs October 27–November 11. HGO is transforming an exhibit hall in the convention center into an intimate theater after being displaced from its creative home at the Wortham Theater Center by Hurricane Harvey. Every seat will be less than 100 feet from the stage. The space will also give audiences insight into and connection to the theatrical process, in what the company is calling “unconventional opera.” Tickets are available at HGO.org; seating at the HGO Resilience Theater will be assigned in early October.     Houston Grand Opera’s 2020–21 Season Features Incredible Lineup of Seven Productions, Including Opera Favorites and Company Premieres The company presents the world premiere, The Snowy Day; two HGO premieres, Breaking the Waves and The Sound of Music; Werther, for the first time in over 40 years; the return of Parsifal; and two opera favorites, Carmen and Cinderella HOUSTON—January 16, 2020—Houston Grand Opera (HGO) is proud to announce its 2020–21 season, featuring a repertoire of beloved classics, company premieres, and a much-anticipated world premiere. The 66th season opens with audience favorite Carmen. American mezzo-soprano Isabel Leonard makes her HGO and role debut as Carmen in the revival of Rob Ashford’s acclaimed 2014 production of Bizet’s classic. She is joined by tenor Andrea Caré as Don José, bass-baritone Christian Pursell as Escamillo, and Anita Hartig as Micaela, all making their HGO debuts. The production will be conducted by HGO Principal Guest Conductor Eun Sun Kim. Following Carmen in the fall is Massenet’s introspective masterpiece Werther. HGO Studio alumni Arturo Chacón-Cruz in the title role, Ana María Martínez as Charlotte, and Joshua Hopkins as Albert reunite for this work that has not been performed at Houston Grand Opera in over 40 years. Artistic and Music Director Patrick Summers conducts this production by Francisco Negrin. The company’s 71st world premiere continues the holiday opera series with Joel Thompson, composer, and Andrea Davis Pinkney’s, librettist, opera adaptation of The Snowy Day, based on the beloved children’s picture book by Ezra Jack Keats.
