Selçuk Kırbaç’a te şekkürlerimi sunarım. Unfortunately, this stage remains poorly studied. The tectonic reconstructions of the UMB for this time primarily depend on the views on the kinematics and tectonic evolution of numerous sialic massifs with Precambrian basement in the structure of the Tien Shan, Kazakhstan, Altai, and Mongolia. At present, the concept of the origin of these massifs is largely based on the lithostratigraphic similarity of the Neoproterozoic and Lower Paleozoic sec tions of the Tarim, South China, and Siberian platforms with coeval sections of Precambrian massifs within the UMB. New paleomagnetic and geochronological data can serve as additional sources of information on the origin and paleotectonic position of the microcontinents. In this paper, we present new isotopic datings and a new paleomagnetic determination for the Neoproterozoic volcanic rocks of the Zabhan Formation from the Baydrag microcontinent in central Mongolia.

The Anti-Bolshevik Movement in the Semirechensk Cossack Host – a Brief Historical Essay From the “White Guard” Almanac, No. 8. Cossacks of Russia in the White Movement. M., Posev, 2005, pp. 225-235 . The history of the Semirechensk Cossack resistance to the Bolsheviks is reflected only in fragmentary form in historical literature, and still awaits a researcher similar to N.V. Ledenev, the author of the fundamental "History of the Semirechensk Cossack Soldiers" (Verniy, 1909). This essay attempts to show the main milestones in the struggle of Semirechensk Cossacks against Bolshevism during the Civil War in Russia from 1917 to 1922. Map of 1920 Semirechye. An appendix gives the modern place names. The year 1917 was very difficult for the Semirechensk Cossacks. In addition to extreme tensions on the Caucasian and European fronts of the World War, where the main forces were stationed, the Semirechensk Cossacks were forced to deal with the consequences of the bloody Kirghiz Insurrection1 of 1916 in the Semirechye. Almost every man in the Host was "called to the colours". At that time, the 3rd Semirechensk Cossack Regiment, the 1st, 2nd and 3rd Semirechensk Special Cossack Sotnias2, the 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th Semirechensk Opolcheniye3 Cossack Sotnias, and also the Reserve Sotnia of the Semirechensk Cossack regiment were in the Semirechensk region. In addition, the 6th Orenburg Cossack “Ataman Ugletsky” Regiment and several infantry and artillery units were located on the border with China. In July and August 1917, the Cossack detachments had to suppress the revolutionary unrest in the province, created this time by the non-Cossack Russian population.

  • Death by the Lake: Mortality Crisis in Early Fourteenth
Journal of Interdisciplinary History, L:1 (Summer, 2019), 59–90. Philip Slavin Death by the Lake: Mortality Crisis in Early Fourteenth-Century Central Asia The geographical ori- gins of the Black Death is one of the most pressing and hotly debated questions concerning the historiography of the Second Plague Pandemic, involving not only historians but also (in recent years) palaeogeneticists. Roughly speaking, the history of the de- Downloaded from http://direct.mit.edu/jinh/article-pdf/50/1/59/1702607/jinh_a_01376.pdf by guest on 25 September 2021 bate begins in 1893 with Gasquet’s The Black Death of 1348 and 1349 (1893), which situated the origins of the plague in China, whence Italian merchants spread it to Europe in trading caravans, through Crimea. In 1951, Pollitzer brought attention to the existence of two East Syriac Christian (Nestorian) cemeteries in Chu Valley (in the Issyk-Kul’ region of northern Kyrgyzstan), excavated in 1885/6, containing ten inscriptions from 1338/9 indicating “death through pestilence.” Although Pollitzer himself never studied the ep- igraphical evidence from the Issyk-Kul’ cemeteries, he “relocated” the initial outbreak of the plague to Central Asia, whence, according to him, it spread to Crimea and later to Europe. Dols adopted the “Central Asian origin” hypothesis in his 1977 monograph about the plague in the Middle East. Conversely, the “Chinese origin” hypotheses found advocates in Ziegler (1969), who was not aware of the Issyk-Kul’ evidence, as well as in McNeill (1979) and Campbell (2016), who both saw Issyk-Kul’ as an intermittent station in the pathogen’s journey from China to Europe.1 Philip Slavin is Associate Professor of History, University of Stirling.

  • Understanding the Sustainability of Cooperation in Sharing Transboundary Watercourses: a Case Study of the Chu and Talas River Basins
AN ABSTRACT OF THE THESIS OF Nargiza Osmonova for the degree of Master of Science in Water Resources Policy and Management presented on June 12, 2020. Title: Understanding the Sustainability of Cooperation in Sharing Transboundary Watercourses: A Case Study of the Chu and Talas River Basins Abstract approved: ____________________________________________________ Jenniver Sehring Mary V. Santelmann This research is conducted to identify factors that contribute to understanding the relations between states and increasing the cooperation between countries which share transboundary watercourses, and enable countries to continue, also in difficult periods, cooperation in mutually beneficial relationships in a sustainable manner. This is an important issue especially in the region of Central Asia, with abundant water resources and inability to agree to manage those water resources as a common good. However, considering the vulnerability of these resources and the different approaches of countries to the issue of effective and equitable use, cooperation between the newly independent countries has been challenging. This research focused on two countries of Central Asia, Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan, who made progress in bilateral cooperation and have established the only bilateral joint water Commission in the region. The relevance of the topic is evidenced by the increasing growth in the number of publications in the fields of cooperation, hydro-politics, and integrated water resources management. This study was conducted with the aim of a more detailed consideration of one specific case using scientific findings to identify the stability of relations between states. By using the conceptual framework of Savenije and Zaag (2000), I focused on three major “pillars” for sustainable cooperation: (1) institutions, (2) politics and (3) technical cooperation.

TOMOHIKO UYAMA Chapter 3 THE GEOGRAPHY OF CIVILIZATIONS: A SPATIAL ANALYSIS OF THE KAZAKH INTELLIGENTSIA’S ACTIVITIES, FROM THE MID-NINETEENTH TO THE EARLY TWENTIETH CENTURY TOMOHIKO UYAMA The aim of this paper is to examine geographical factors in historical pro- cesses in Kazakhstan (Qazaqstan) from the mid-19th to the early 20th century, focusing attention on the activities of Kazakh intellectuals. More concretely, it will analyze the correlation between the geographic (partly represented as tribal or educational) backgrounds of intellectuals and their behavioral and ideologi- cal characteristics. In so doing it will show the interactions between the urban and the nomadic, and between Russian and Islamic civilizations in Kazakhstan in the given period. Recently many Kazakh scholars are examining the Kazakh intelligentsia of the beginning of the 20th century in their role as activists in the movements for national liberation. However, the geographic factors of these movements along with cumulative biographical data on these intellectuals have yet to be studied. Consequently, this paper is somewhat “adventurous” and many of its theses are hypothetical. 1. NATURAL AND HISTORICAL SETTING The territory of Kazakhstan is characterized by various degrees of dry cli- mate. Each degree of dry climate roughly corresponds to a specific type of vegetation, which, in its turn, produces a specific landscape. Thus, if we ne- glect forests which are found only in a few mountainous areas, Kazakhstan is divided into 4 landscape zones: forest steppe, steppe (including mountain grass- land), semi-desert, and desert (see Map 2). The forest steppe is found only in the northern part of Kazakhstan.
