Smithsonian Contributions to Paleobiol­ ogy, number 85, 252 pages, 37 figures, 71 plates, 1999.—Sixty-seven species of Paleocene planktonic foraminifera are described and illustrated, including three species of Eoglobigerina, four species of Parasubbotina, five species of Subbotina, two species of Hedbergella, 10 species oiGlobanomalina, six species ofAcarinina, 12 species of Morozovella, three species of lgorina, four species of Praemurica, one species of Guembelitria, one species of Globoconusa, three species of Parvularugoglobigerina, two species of Woodringina, six species of Chiloguembe- lina, one species of Rectoguembelina, and four species of Zeauvigerina. Taxonomic classification of normal perforate taxa are organized according to wall texture. Spinose cancellate genera include Eoglobigerina, Parasubbotina, and Subbotina; cancellate nonspinose genera include Igorinina and Praemurica; smooth-walled genera include Hedbergella and Globanomalina; and muricate genera include Acarinina and Morozovella. Taxonomic classification of microperforate taxa (including Guembelitria, Globoconusa, Parvularugoglo­ bigerina, Woodringina, Chiloguembelina, Rectoguembelina, and Zeauvigerina) are organized according to test morphology. Scanning electron microscope (SEM) images of type species described by Morozova in the collections of the Geological Institute, Academy of Sciences (GAN), Moscow, and the type material described by Subbotina in the collections of the All Union Petroleum Scientific Research Geological Prospecting Institute (VNIGRI), St. Petersburg, are shown on Plates 8-12. Twelve species described by Morozova, nine species described by Subbotina, and one species described by Bykova are illustrated. In addition, SEM images of 28 holotypes and two paratypes from the Smithsonian Institution collections are shown on Plates 13-17, and the lectotype for Globigerina compressa Plummer, 1926, and the neotype for Globorotalia monmouthensis Olsson, 1961, are designated and illustrated with SEM images. Paleobiogeographic maps showing the global distribution of 29 commonly occurring Paleocene taxa are included in the atlas, as well as figures showing the stratigraphic ranges of species by genus and stratigraphic first and last appearances. The biostratigraphic framework used in the atlas is the revised biostratigraphy given in Berggren et al., 1995, which is summarized in the atlas. Wall texture and morphological relationships between species and genera form the basis of phylogenetic interpretations. This is discussed in the section "Wall Texture, Classification, and Phylogeny" and is referenced to Plates 1-7. We characterise and discuss each member in de- tail in terms of derivation of name, definition of a type section, distribution, thickness, lithofacies, boundaries, palaeontology, and age. The age of the whole formation appar- ently ranges at least from the middle Oxfordian to the Valanginian through Hauterivian or possibly Aptian. The Tendaguru Formation constitutes a cyclic sedimentary succes- sion, consisting of three marginal marine, sandstone-dominated depositional units and three predominantly coastal to tidal plain, fine-grained depositional units with dinosaur remains.

En esta revisión fue actualizada la sistemática y la clasificación de las especies de heterobranquios del registro fósil de Cuba, mediante la consulta de bibliografía especializada. La taxonomía fue verificada a todos los niveles y las especies registradas fueron organizadas evolutivamente de acuerdo a la sistemática actual. Esta actualización permitió obtener un conteo de 58 especies, agrupadas en 4 subgéneros, 31 géneros, 9 subfamilias, 20 familias, 17 superfamilias, 4 subórdenes y 3 órdenes; con 16 especies clasificadas cuya distribución se extiende desde el periodo Jurásico al Paleógeno y 30 distribuidas principalmente del Neógeno al Cuaternario. Aún sin identificar existe un grupo de fósiles de moluscos terrestres. Cuatro especies fueron ubicadas taxonómicamente como corresponde, pero no se encontraron referencias acerca de su nomenclatura. Este trabajo representa la introducción de los paleogasterópodos en la sistemática y la clasificación de los moluscos de Cuba en general. ABSTRACT-Loose specimensof a new species of Nerinea, N. epelys,were found in an outcrop area of limestone of middle Eocene age in southwesternOriente Province, Cuba. They are presumedto be Upper Cretaceousdetrital constituents weathered out of the Eocene limestone. N. epelys is closely allied to the Upper Cretaceous Europea, N. bicincta;indeed, specimens of the Cuban species from the Upper Cre- taceous Habana formationof Camaguey Province were identified by Knipscheeras N. bicincta. HE Nerinea herewith described was col- fossils, however, were weathered out of their lected during the course of geologic map- matrix and were lying loose in the field. PEZA** (With 2 plates) Manuscript submitted on October 1",1996, the revised manuscript on November 18'\ 1996 Summary Based on material from the Barremian/Aptian of Albania, the nerineacean Adaptyxis n. gen. is described. It possesses high turriculate shells with concave whorls of moderate height. Because of the hollow columella it is assigned to the Umboniidae LYSSENKO& AllEY. The columella is hollow. Of the internal plaits, the adapical columellar plait is very small. The other columellar plait, the palatal plait and the parietal plait are strong. Because of the internal morphology, Adaptyxis is considered as transitional between the genus Affiniptyxis LYSSENKO& AllEY and Plesioplocus PCHELINTSEY.Synchronously, Neoptyxis PCHELINTSEY evolved from Affiniptyxis. Both genera are part of the Simploptyxidae HAKOBJAN.An origin of the Umboniidae and the Ptygmatidae from a Melanioptyxis-like group in the Jurassic is considered. It is not clear whether the Nerineidae originated from the same group as the other nerineacean families or from the Mathildoid family Anoptychoidae, as was postulated by BANDEL(1995).
