Standup Comedy with Chris Roach Dennis Rooney Standup Comedy with Chris Roach Dennis Rooney Saturday, August 7, 2021 at 8pm Firehouse Stage RestART Tent Performance Sponsor: Season Sponsors: The Performers Chris Roach is a Comedian/Actor born and raised in New York. He has brought his unique and self-deprecating sense of humor to some of the biggest and best-known stages in the country, such as Gotham Comedy Club, Comic Strip Live NYC, The Borgata in Atlantic City and The Paramount in Huntington, NY. He recently toured as the opening act on Kevin James’ 2019 tour all across the country. He is best known for his major recurring role of Mott in the hit CBS sitcom “Kevin Can Wait” and has also appeared in numerous other episodics, both comedies and dramas. He also created the viral video ode to his beloved hometown “Ronkokomo” which has nearly two million views across all platforms. He currently co-hosts two weekly podcasts – the popular new Long Island Explained podcast, which focuses exclusively on historical and pop culture events from his native Long Island, and The Chris Roach Show. ChrisRoachComedy.com The Performers Dennis Rooney started doing stand up somewhere between January and April of 2010, it’s all a bit of a haze, like many of his “first time” experiences (ahem). The first two years of his career were spent pounding the pavement between NYC and his home, Long Island, doing countless open mics before ever stepping foot into a comedy club. This foundation of hard work has been thematic to his comedy career. He loves stand up, and it is important to him to do good work, even in the face of harsh tasks, like writing his own bio. Since starting he has become a regular at the Governor’s comedy clubs on Long Island. He’s performed at the Asheville and Cleveland Comedy Festivals as well as independent shows throughout the country. A burgeoning college performer as well, Dennis enjoys doing any and all shows; the weirder the gig the better. He has done it all on the spectrum – from a squeaky clean bat mitzvah show in a modern Orthodox synagogue with no electricity to opening for national headliners in large theaters, Dennis loves the challenge and always delivers. He has been self described as a blue collar absurdist armed to the teeth with sharp jokes. Special Thanks General Operating Support is provided to the Goodwill Theatre by a grant from the Broome County Art’s Council’s United Cultural Fund. This project is supported in part by the National Endowment for the Arts. • CBS' 'Young Sheldon' Has Strongest Comedy Opening in Four Years
CBS' 'Young Sheldon' Has Strongest Comedy Opening in Four Years 09.26.2017 CBS' Young Sheldon, arguably the show most likely to succeed this season, came out of the gate with a big bang, debuting at a 3.7 rating among adults 18-49 and 16.6 million viewers. That's the most-watched premiere rating for a new comedy since 2 Broke Girls debuted in 2011 and the highest-rated since The Crazy Ones in 2013. That said, both of those shows have since been canceled, with 2 Broke Girls ending its run after last season and The Crazy Ones - which starred Sarah Michelle Gellar and the late, great Robin Williams as a daughter-father advertising team - failed to make it past season one. Young Sheldon debuted out of the show from which it's spun, The Big Bang Theory, and held almost all of its viewers. Big Bang, opening season 11, premiered at a 3.9 rating in the key demo and 17 million viewers. Young Sheldon was just teasing viewers with this early episode, however. It's not due to return until its official premiere on Nov. 2, after CBS completes its run of Thursday Night Football and the show can enter its regular time slot of Thursday at 8:30 p.m., behind The Big Bang Theory. Kevin Can Wait, starring Kevin James and featuring the arrival of Leah Remini among some viewer blowback, returned for season two at 9 p.m. with a 2.3 in the demo and 10.1 million viewers, while new sitcom Me Myself & I starring Bobby Moynihan and John Larroquette premiered at a 1.7 in the demo and 7.4 million viewers.

The variety of options offered by digital platforms such as Netflix, Hulu, and YouTube introduces new competitors to physical entertainment venues, such as comedy clubs. IBIS World Report suggests that the comedy club industry generates $315.1 million annually in the United States. However, while the industry itself is growing, digital entertainment venues (e.g., Netflix, Hulu, Vimeo, and YouTube) threaten the future of physical stand-up clubs (Edwards, 2015). This potential substitute has left stand-up comedy clubs, like the Texas Improv Comedy Clubs, questioning if they can maintain their brand identity, while potentially leveraging new media to their advantage. Overview In 1963, the Improvisation Comedy Club, or Improv, started in New York City by Budd Friedman as a venue for Broadway performers to relax after their shows.

  • Chapter 5. Process As Improv
CHAPTER 5 PROCESS AS IMPROV . we may know all there is to know about how texts work and how readers read, and we still may create documents that fail to communicate effectively. – Thomas Kent (“Paralogic” 149) Joke-writing is my thing, it’s like a passion. What it is, is basically: you have an idea, you write it as hard as you can, but at the end of the day, it’s like you gotta get it on stage. And it’s not a joke until a crowd laughs at it. – Dave Attell (“Friday,” Bumping Mics with Jeff Ross and Dave Attell) If you’ve ever been in the room when a seasoned stand-up is trying out new jokes, you have viscerally felt the composing processes by which stand up is forged. I once saw comedian Rob Delaney perform at Cincinnati’s Taft Theatre. I thought he was supposed to be in the main theatre—the regal, expansive, theatrical stage—but he wasn’t. Instead, he performed in the theatre’s basement. I was never clear on why the change was made—perhaps it had to do with the number of seats sold, perhaps Delaney himself chose the closer quarters of the basement with its lowered ceilings and rows of ragged chairs to get the feel of an intimate dingy comedy club. Regardless, the ad-hoc nature of this performance space seemed to encourage him to do what he did at the end of his well-crafted, essentially scripted show. He tried new jokes. And they didn’t really work—ba- sically, they bombed.

1 Contentious Comedy: Negotiating Issues of Form, Content, and Representation in American Sitcoms of the Post-Network Era Thesis by Lisa E. Williamson Submitted for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy The University of Glasgow Department of Theatre, Film and Television Studies 2008 (Submitted May 2008) © Lisa E. Williamson 2008 2 Abstract Contentious Comedy: Negotiating Issues of Form, Content, and Representation in American Sitcoms of the Post-Network Era This thesis explores the way in which the institutional changes that have occurred within the post-network era of American television have impacted on the situation comedy in terms of form, content, and representation. This thesis argues that as one of television’s most durable genres, the sitcom must be understood as a dynamic form that develops over time in response to changing social, cultural, and institutional circumstances. By providing detailed case studies of the sitcom output of competing broadcast, pay-cable, and niche networks, this research provides an examination of the form that takes into account both the historical context in which it is situated as well as the processes and practices that are unique to television. In addition to drawing on existing academic theory, the primary sources utilised within this thesis include journalistic articles, interviews, and critical reviews, as well as supplementary materials such as DVD commentaries and programme websites. This is presented in conjunction with a comprehensive analysis of the textual features of a number of individual programmes. By providing an examination of the various production and scheduling strategies that have been implemented within the post-network era, this research considers how differentiation has become key within the multichannel marketplace.
