Halfway to dawn. Spotlight on Jacy Parker / Marian Bruce. 1 BRU 30 Jazz New York - Paris : 1938-1955 / Don Byas. 1 BYA 30 Jazz Social call / Betty Carter. 1 Look to the rainbow / Al Jarreau. I go back home : A story about hoping and dreaming / Jimmy Scott. 2 The Complete, 1954-1958 / Dakota Staton. 1 STA 80 Jazz My foolish heart / Ralph Towner. Let's groove : the best of / Earth, Wind & Fire. 116 EAR Funk-Soul Sometimes too much ain't enough / Excitements (The). 116 EXC Funk-Soul Sur ce troisième long format produit par Mike Mariconda, l'essence du groupe n'a pas changé, à savoir soul, r'n'b et une touche de gospel 50's, mais le son est maintenant complètement affiné et affûté. 3 Masterpiece. Smooth sailin' / Isley Brothers (The). 116 ISL Funk-Soul Automaton / Jamiroquai. It's just begun. Phase two / Jimmy Castor Bunch (The). 116 JIM Funk-Soul Music of my mind / Stevie Wonder. 116 WON Funk-Soul Humanz / Gorillaz. Zifukoro / Niska. 2 NIS 90 Hip-Hop 5 .

“3 Feet High and Rising”--De La Soul (1989) Added to the National Registry: 2010 Essay by Vikki Tobak (guest post)* De La Soul For hip-hop, the late 1980’s was a tinderbox of possibility. The music had already raised its voice over tensions stemming from the “crack epidemic,” from Reagan-era politics, and an inner city community hit hard by failing policies of policing and an underfunded education system--a general energy rife with tension and desperation. From coast to coast, groundbreaking albums from Public Enemy’s “It Takes a Nation of Millions to Hold Us Back” to N.W.A.’s “Straight Outta Compton” were expressing an unprecedented line of fire into American musical and political norms. The line was drawn and now the stage was set for an unparalleled time of creativity, righteousness and possibility in hip-hop. Enter De La Soul. De La Soul didn’t just open the door to the possibility of being different. They kicked it in. If the preceding generation took hip-hop from the park jams and revolutionary commentary to lay the foundation of a burgeoning hip-hop music industry, De La Soul was going to take that foundation and flip it. The kids on the outside who were a little different, dressed different and had a sense of humor and experimentation for days. In 1987, a trio from Long Island, NY--Kelvin “Posdnous” Mercer, Dave “Trugoy the Dove” Jolicoeur, and Vincent “Maseo, P.A. Pasemaster Mase and Plug Three” Mason—were classmates at Amityville Memorial High in the “black belt” enclave of Long Island were dusting off their parents’ record collections and digging into the possibilities of rhyming over breaks like the Honey Drippers’ “Impeach the President” all the while immersing themselves in the imperfections and dust-laden loops and interludes of early funk and soul albums.

  • Article on Conscious Hip Hop
Article on Conscious Hip Hop Excerpt From De La Soul Article By Sheryl Garret, Sunday Times (London), July 1996 In 1989, De La Soul's debut album Three Feet High And Rising was hailed by New York's Village Voice as "the Sergeant Pepper of hip hop". The 24 short but sweet tracks rapped about everything from dandruff to their so-called Daisy Age philosophy, but the quirky humour and catchy hooks hid a more serious intent that may have got lost in the face of the album's massive commercial success. Along with the Jungle Brothers and A Tribe Called Quest, De La Soul were part of a loose organisation called Native Tongues, a hip hop collective based around zany humour, eclectic samples and, most of all, positive vibes. Hip hop meanwhile became dominated by the West Coast sound known as gangsta rap – a verbal cocktail of violence, sexism, guns, drugs and money. On the phone from the US, De La Soul's main spokesman Pos (Kelvin Mercer) says they're reluctant to be seen as a kind of "hip hop police", but admits they took a back-to-basics approach this time because "there are a lot of messages that we wanted to put across to the people, and if you want to teach something, you can't present eleventh- or twelfth-grade material to ninth-grade students". The problem, [Pos] points out, is that … one man's poetry is another's obscenity. If it were left to politicians, many would favour silencing all rap as an inconvenient articulation of black experience.

The warrant was issued by the judge overseeing Brown’s case after he was informed Friday morning that the singer had been discharged from rehab “for failure to comply with rules and regulations of the program.” No further details were released, but more information will be presented to Superior Court Judge James R Brandlin when Brown appears in his courtroom tomorrow afternoon. Sheriff’s officials said Brown was cooperative when he was arrested at a Malibu treatment facility where he had been staying and transported to a jail facility in downtown Los Angeles. While rock musicians have attempted to come to terms with this phenomenon by either performing a ‘Romantic’ sense of authenticity (basically by importing folk values to the production process) or ‘Modernist authenticity’ (by highlighting experimen- tation and alienation), Damon Albarn and Jamie Hewlett, creators of Gorillaz, found a third way which ingeniously allows them to do both. By creating a virtual rock band, and by hiding their own media personalities behind those of their virtual alter egos, they brought themselves into a position which allows them to produce ‘sincere’ popular music which ‘playfully’ stages the absurdities of major label music business while very successfully operating within its very confines.

  • A Call for Change in Copyright Law: the Seven Second Free Zone
A Call For Change in Copyright Law: The Seven Second Free Zone Robert Willey Ball State University May 15, 2014 Abstract A proposal is made to permit up to seven seconds of sound recordings to be sampled and used in new works without requiring a license from the owners of the composition and sound recording copyrights. The high-quality sample-heavy collages that were released during the Golden Age of Hip-Hop (1986-1992) are examples of the type of music that could not be made in the present legal climate. The innovative and imaginative use of sampling by groups such as Public Enemy and The Beastie Boys was effectively stopped by lawsuits brought in the 1990s, greatly reducing the number and variety of samples used in subsequent productions. The proposed change in sampling law would allow musicians to incorporate samples without having to go through the cumbersome and expensive process of obtaining clearances that currently impedes creativity and deprives the public of interesting work and the experience of the direct juxtaposition of old and new. 2 Introduction Twenty years ago a series of legal decisions established that musicians must get permission to use samples of recorded music in new productions. The process of obtaining clearances, however has since become too cumbersome and expensive for most musicians, limiting what they can produce and deliver to the public. Several options have been proposed for adjusting the copyright system, but none of these will produce the conditions necessary to allow the creation of classic albums such as those from Public Enemy and The Beastie Boys, or more recently those of Gregg Gillis (aka Girl Talk).

  • Seven Brothers from the South Side of Chicago Bring the Brass Band Tradition Mixed with Hip-Hop, Soul, and Funk to Tacoma’S Rialto Theater on November 18
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: November 1, 2016 MEDIA CONTACT: Lacey Wright, Associate Executive Director 253.573.2360 |[email protected] | BroadwayCenter.org Hypnotic Brass Ensemble: Seven Brothers from the South Side of Chicago Bring the Brass Band Tradition Mixed with Hip-Hop, Soul, and Funk To Tacoma’s Rialto Theater on November 18 Presented with support from the Tacoma Philharmonic Endowment Sponsor: CHI Franciscan, DaVita, Ted Brown Music | Media: 88.5 FM KNKX TACOMA, WASH. – Seven brothers from the South Side of Chicago and an extraordinary musical family, Hypnotic Brass Ensemble (HBE) will perform at Tacoma’s Rialto Theater on November 18 at 7:30 p.m. The ensemble freely mixes the brass band tradition with generous doses of hip hop, soul, and funk, creating an intoxicating sound. Tickets are on sale now. HBE began their musical training at the ages of four and five with their father, jazz trumpeter/band leader Kelan Phil Cohran (EARTH, WIND, & FIRE, CHAKA KHAN, SUN RA). They went on to form the Phil Cohran Youth Ensemble in 1990. While the group’s early musical training primarily encompassed elements of instrumental performance, the brothers were personally exposed to the music of their own generation - hip-hop, rock, and reggae to name a few – which have now merged the cosmic jazz style of their father. The ensemble’s sound has spread throughout the industry, and after Emcee/actor Mos Def caught a live HBE show, the brothers were asked to join him onstage as part of the Mos Def Big Band. The brothers recorded the Gorillaz record with D.Albarn Welcome to Plastic Beach and joined the “Plastic Beach 2010 World T” upon its release, performing alongside Bobby Womack, Mick Jones from the Clash, De La Soul, and Snoop Dogg.
