Box 1346 Ann Arbor, Ml 48106- 1346 ABSTRACT This thesis examines the tension between mystical ( haqTqT) and romantic (majazT) conceptions of love in the Punjabi qissa tradition before the end of the eighteenth century. All the texts under consideration date from before the third quarter of the eighteenth century and, therefore, both predate and inform the classical qissa tradition of the nineteenth century. The texts narrate three of the most commonly represented love stories in pre­ twentieth century Punjab, two of them versions of local folk legends and one an episode from the Quran. A total of six texts are considered in the thesis: Hafiz Barkhurdar's Mirza Sahiba, Siddlq Tail's Yusuf Zulatkha, and the versions of HTr by Ahmad, Muqbil and Varis Shah.

    Strengthening Participatory Organization (SPO) SPO is one of the largest rights-based civil society organization in Pakistan. It is pursuing various program components presently being implemented in over 75 districts of the country. SPO seeks to address mainly governance, social and political issues in the country through its programmes focussing on democratic th governance, social justice, peace and harmony, institutional strengthening, conflict resolution, citizens engagement, gender, electoral reforms and political parties development.     59 Indu Banga: Ecology and Land Rights Ecology and Land Rights in the Punjab Indu Banga Punjab University, Chandigarh ________________________________________________________________ Covering Ranjit Singh’s reign and the agrarian order that he established, this paper describes the varied forms of land use, land relations and socio-economic conditions prevalent in the different ecological zones of Punjab. Focusing specifically on different types of farmers and their access to land rights, it examines how Punjabi agricultural communities adapted their ‘modes of resource use’ and lifestyles to the physical environment. The natural setting also instrumental in shaping the development of ‘villages’ and human settlements along the fertile lands fringing the rivers. Ranjit Singh’s land revenue extraction policies too varied accordingly. But within a decade of Ranjit Singh’s death, the establishment of British rule disturbed this equilibrium and led to ‘an ecological watershed’ with a qualitatively different political order, economic organization and technological developments. ________________________________________________________________ The ecological context, that is ‘the soil, water, animal, mineral and vegetative bases of society’, has traditionally been assumed by historians but studied by biologists and geographers.1 Today, however, ‘human ecology’ has become the concern of several social science disciplines, each linking the ‘structure and organization of a human community to interactions with its localised environment’.2 A considerable part of economic, social and political organization in the pre-industrial societies in particular can perhaps be accounted for in terms of adaptations to physical environment. The present paper illustrates this point with reference to land rights in the pre-colonial Punjab under Ranjit Singh (1780-1839). His state encompassed the Punjab plains from the river Satluj in the south-east to across the Indus in the north- west, besides the Kangra and Jammu hills and Kashmir and Laddakh.

All the texts under consideration date from before the third quarter of the eighteenth century and, therefore, both predate and inform the classical qissa tradition of the nineteenth century. The texts narrate three of the most commonly represented love stories in pre­ twentieth century Punjab, two of them versions of local folk legends and one an episode from the Quran. A total of six texts are considered in the thesis: Hafiz Barkhurdar's Mirza Sahiba, Siddlq Tail's Yusuf Zulatkha, and the versions of HTr by Ahmad, Muqbil and Varis Shah.

    The Role of Biraderies in the Politics of Faisalabad Division Ayub Anwar Faisalabad Division is comprised of four district namely Chiniot district, Faisalabad district, Jhang district and Toba Tek Singh district whose old name is Lyallpur, is famous as Manchester of Pakistan being an industrial city. The foundation of Lyallpur was laid in 1896 on the direction of the than Lt. Governor of the Punjab, Sir James Loyal. Before 1880, it was known as Chenab colony. The map of Faisalabad was planned by Sir, Ganga Ram. River Chenab is at a distance 25-mile towards North West and river Ravi is at about 27-miles towards East. Area in between these rivers was named Sandal Bar. Before Partition Punjab was attractive side fertility of the land. That’s way land was divided according to rainfall in this region, namely Sandal Bar, Karana Bar, Gunji Bar, Gondal Bar, Neeli Bar are popular because of agricultural prodnets. Fertility of the land made Punjab prominent from other provinces. Present Punjab is the biggest province of Pakistan on the basis of Population. Punjab has nine Divisions and Faisalabad is one of them. The main tribes and casts which are settled in Faisalabad division are Jatt, Arian, Gujjar, Rajput, Mughal, Sayyed, Pathan, Bhatti, Balochi, Awan and Kashmiri. Since the creation of Pakistan so many changes have been occurred but the biradary system has its own continuity. This continuity having piratical and social ups and downs laid the basic discrimination of element amongst people. Then with the passage of time grouping system was introduced, tended to orient people to high light their social status through caste or biraderism.
