Following the success of the Sydney Olympic and Paralympic Games and the continued progress towards the unification of athletics in this country, this year looms as one of the sport’s most important in its history. Later this year the world’s focus will once again be on Australia as the Goodwill Games come to Brisbane and Melbourne hosts the prestigious IAAF Grand Prix Final. While the world’s best athletes will be in town for those events in September, Athletics Australia’s annual showpiece is the Grand Prix Series which continues to expand in 2001. From 2001, Australia’s leading telecommunications company Telstra will be the major sponsor of Athletics Australia. We are excited at the prospect of working with Telstra particularly in the presentation of the Telstra Athletics Grand Prix and Australian Championships. Australia’s top athletes including Olympic medallists Cathy Freeman, Jai Taurima and Tatiana Grigorieva, Paralympic medallists such as Louise Sauvage, Tim Sullivan and Neil Fuller, and World Junior medallists Jana Pittman, Georgie Clarke and Aaron Fish are set to take part in their bids to earn selection for Australia at the 2001 World Championships. This year three regional centres will host national athletics events as Athletics Australia acknowledges the abundance of talent in athletes and officials, and the increasing number of venues in non-metropolitan areas. The first Grand Prix of the year will be held in Newcastle, the Australian Youth Championships take place in Bendigo while the Selection Trial for the World Cross Country Championships is in Ballarat. Fox Sports continue their tremendous association with Australian athletics and will once again feature the Telstra Athletics Grand Prix and Australian Championships with free-to-air right’s holder Nine Network. Athletics Australia acknowledges the outstanding contribution of its associate sponsors, New Balance, Ansett Australia, TNT, Mannatech, print media partner News Limited, the Australian Sports Commission, and the state institutes and academies of sport. In another initiative for the sport, Athletics Australia is proud to present this expanded Season Guide in 2001 - a combination of the annual Handbook of Records and Results and Media Guide. This resource will be an invaluable guide to the domestic season and provides the latest statistics for the avid athletics fan or those wanting to learn a bit more. 2001 should be another milestone in Athletics Australia’s history, and we hope you enjoy the Telstra Athletics Grand Prix and Telstra Australian Championships and witness many Australian athletic feats throughout the year. Andrew Forrest Chairman 4 Athletics A ustr alia Season Guide 2001 MESSAGE FROM TELSTRA This year’s Telstra Athletics Grand Prix Series is an important program in Australia’s sporting calendar and one that promises exceptionally high quality track and field performances. It also comes at an exciting time for athletics in
