P a g e | 1 Te Kāhui Mutumutu o Te Upoko o te ika-a-Māui Amputee Society of the Greater Wellington Region Inc "Providing support for amputees and their families." 27 Waiho Tce, Elsdon, Porirua. 0274 876599 [email protected] February Newsletter 2017 Kia ora koutou katoa ngā mihi o te tau hōu = Greetings to you all this new year On behalf of the Amputee Federation of New Zealand, Kate Horan and I were invited to Government House in Wellington on Waitangi Day to commemorate the 177th Anniversary of the signing of the Treaty of Waitangi. Although the weather was less than kind for the Bledisloe garden party reception, we as hardy all-weather Wellingtonians, braved the cool conditions along with a large contingent of diplomats and honoured guests and absorbed this auspicious occasion. On arrival, we were entertained by the NZ Airforce band while the many waiting staff roamed the grounds with trays of various beverages and delightful finger food. Major Willis Howell from The Salvation Army opened the proceedings with a prayer before The Governor General, Her Excellency The Rt Hon Dame Patsy Reddy took to the podium to issue her Waitangi Day address. Her speech was interesting and intricately woven. Dame Patsy had at one time been a Negotiator for the Crown in the Treaty Settlement process. Her knowledge and references to the history of Māori and Pākehā relationships which led to the creation of our founding Treaty documents signing and the years of struggle that ensued were honest, insightful and well worth listening to and reflecting on.

CLUB KIWIFRUIT FUND RAISING PICK As reported in Ramblings newsletter, 6th June, 1992. The annual Shallcross kiwifruit pick was once again offered to Tauranga Ramblers to give our funds a much needed boost so that we can subsidise club days, Bar-B-Q’s, Pinto, buses, newsletters and travel to major events. All in all club members receive more than their subscriptions cover, therefore we need full support from all participants for our fund-raising efforts. The club is very appreciative of the chances to earn this money and a special thanks go to Bill and Marge Shallcross for this fruit picking opportunity. It certainly beats selling raffle tickets and gives us the chance to do something other than one’s usual job or studies. It is quite an education especially the way different people see the hairy berries – their shapes and sizes I’ll leave to your imagination. Colin Clifton commented that it was a change from working alone. Teresa Coston was certainly the noisiest and Kristin McLoughlin one of the quietest, but it was good to see everyone turn out. Some brought their spouses, or sons and daughters. Robyn Bint did a great job removing all the kiwifruit stalks. Marge did a great job of keeping the team fed, while Nigel Hines had done an absolutely fantastic job chasing along all members he could find. Over the two days we picked 162 bins compared to 166 last year. Unfortunately we couldn’t quite finish but Ramblers received $1400.00 for the two day’s work. Once again special thanks to Bill, Marge, Debbie, Russell, Rob Shallcross and his in-laws and to Nigel and Sheryl Hines for their organisation.

  • Olympic Weightlifting
Olympic Weightlifting Olympic weightlifting, or weightlifting, is an athletic discipline in the modern Olympic programme in which the athlete attempts a maximum-weight single lift of a barbell loaded with weight plates. Qualifying – the road to Rio Qualification is based on the results of the 2014 and 2015 International Weightlifting Federation (IWF) World Championships and the 2016 Continental Championships. No more than six men and four women can qualify per country, with a maximum of two athletes per event. Brazil, as host country, is guaranteed five quota places, three for men and two for women. No New Zealand weightlifters have qualified for Rio as yet. The best chance for qualification for our weightlifters is via the Oceania qualifying event being held in Fiji in early 2016. At this event qualifying is based on team results, not individuals. Teams must place in the top three for women to gain one Olympic spot, and men must place in the top four to gain a spot. A women’s team has seven members and a men’s team has eight. If the New Zealand teams are successful at this qualification event in gaining places at the Rio Games, then our selectors will choose one male weightlifter and one female weightlifter to go (in agreement with the NZOC). Rio 2016 Weightlifting When: Competition will take place over 10 days from 7-14 August 2016 (with no competition on 15 August). Where: Riocentro – Pavilion 2. Men will compete in eight events based on athlete weight categories, from under 56kg to the super- heavyweights at over 105kg.

  • Origins of Canadian Olympic Weightlifting
1 Page # June 30, 2011. ORIGINS OF CANADIAN OLYMPIC WEIGHTLIFTING INTRODUCTION The author does not pretend to have written everything about the history of Olympic weightlifting in Canada since Canadian Weightlifting has only one weightlifting magazine to refer to and it is from the Province of Québec “Coup d’oeil sur l’Haltérophilie”, it is understandable that a great number of the articles are about the Quebecers. The researcher is ready to make any modification to this document when it is supported by facts of historical value to Canadian Weightlifting. (Ce document est aussi disponible en langue française) The early history of this sport is not well documented, but weightlifting is known to be of ancient origin. According to legend, Egyptian and Chinese athletes demonstrated their strength by lifting heavy objects nearly 5,000 years ago. During the era of the ancient Olympic Games a Greek athlete of the 6th century BC, Milo of Crotona, gained fame for feats of strength, including the act of lifting an ox onto his shoulders and carrying it the full length of the stadium at Olympia, a distance of more than 200 meters. For centuries, men have been interested in strength, while also seeking athletic perfection. Early strength competitions, where Greek athletes lifted bulls or where Swiss mountaineers shouldered and tossed huge boulders, gave little satisfaction to those individuals who wished to demonstrate their athletic ability. During the centuries that followed, the sport continued to be practiced in many parts of the world. Weightlifting in the early 1900s saw the development of odd-shaped dumbbells and kettle bells which required a great deal of skill to lift, but were not designed to enable the body’s muscles to be used efficiently.
