Our Ocean Backyard –– Santa Cruz Sentinel columns by Gary Griggs, Director, Institute of Marine Sciences, UC Santa Cruz. #73 January 29, 2011 Ships of cement The SantaCruzCement taking on a load of dry cement at the former wharf below the cliffs in Davenport opposite the cement plan. Santa Cruz County is probably one of the only places around that has had three large “cement” ships in its coastal history, none of which was made solely of cement. All of the ships dated from the early part of the last century, and each used for very different purposes. One of the natural resources of the Santa Cruz Mountains’ that was exploited early on was limestone, actually marble, a basic raw material for making cement. When the Davenport cement plant was being constructed in 1905, there wasn’t yet a railroad up the north coast, but it wasn’t long until trestles were built across the canyons and tracks were laid. A direct rail connection up the coast to San Francisco was never completed, so cement had to be transported through a longer and more indirect route, south past Watsonville, through Chittenden Pass, and then north to the bay area. An idea was hatched, which seemed like a great solution at the time; transport the cement by ship directly to Stockton where it was to be offloaded. So as only engineers can, a pier was boldly designed and constructed in the early 1930s starting from the sea cliff opposite the cement plant. A pile driver was lowered down the cliff and steel piles were driven into the seafloor. -

However, what’s currently available is scattered and doesn’t readily give the full picture when looking at the perspective from an individual shipbuilding company. If you have any comments regarding this book, or any further information, especially photographs or paintings of ships where I have none. It would be historically good to show at least one for each ship, and since this is an electronic edition it will be possible to update and include any new information. Hamilton Zachary Grasley Head of Department, Cynthia Werner December 2018 Major Subject: Maritime Archaeology and Conservation Copyright 2018 Dorothy Rowland ABSTRACT Selma is one of three World War I concrete shipwrecks in the Galveston area. While the other two are not identified, one of them is likely the Durham. This research explores how and why these ships ended their service here, and looks at the different methods used for the creation of early concrete ships and the differences in their performance. Selma, one of twelve Emergency Fleet Corporation ships, had a much different design than Durham, but both of the ships were out of use quickly after launch. Selma ran aground and damaged its bow; it was subsequently taken to Galveston for repairs that never occurred. Durham proved to be a very poor sailor, but remained afloat for many more years before becoming a fishing pier in Galveston. Both of these ships have histories of re-use that last beyond their abandonment. This research focuses on the history and construction of Selma and Durham. The text discusses the developments that lead to the development of these ships and how they fared after construction. Additionally, visual survey of how the condition of Selma has changed over time is included. ii DEDICATION This thesis is dedicated to my parents. -

M-82 (M0820001.714) Standard Protocol to Evaluate the Performance of Corrosion Mitigation Technologies in Concrete Repairs July 2014 United States Department of the Interior Bureau of Reclamation Denver Federal Center Technical Service Center Concrete, Geotechnical, & Structural Laboratory Denver, Colorado 80225-0007 M-82 (M0820001.714 7-31-2014 Introduction The protocol for measuring the performance of corrosion mitigation technologies for concrete reinforcing steel was first suggested by a group of industry recognized experts and strategic planners in support of goals outlined in Vision 2020: “A Vision for the Concrete Repair, Protection and Strengthening Industry”. Vision 2020 is an industry created strategic plan and roadmap; documents were developed over a several year period which began in 2003. Information about these documents is available at the American Concrete Institute (ACI) Foundation’s Strategic Development Council (SDC) website. One goal of the Vision 2020 group was to develop a test protocol which could be used to evaluate the effectiveness of steel reinforcement corrosion mitigation techniques for existing structures. As a first step toward achieving that goal, a panel of industry experts met to discuss a proposed protocol during the summer of 2008. The panel reviewed and discussed currently available test methods, concrete repair industry needs, and current research programs. The panel stressed the importance of having a flexible test program that would properly evaluate the performance of current corrosion mitigation options while allowing for future innovations. The panel recommended a pilot program be conducted prior to final adoption of a testing protocol or initiation of any full scale testing program to validate the repeatability and reproducibility of the protocol. -
