Poverty of Spirit and Prayer Let us reflect on some of the things that Our Lady of Lourdes and Saint Bernadette teach us. First of all, poverty of spirit. * Jesus said, “Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heav- en.” (Mt 5:3) Love involves sacrifice, both material and spiritual. In the case of married couples, love is for better or worse, for richer or poorer, in sickness and in health. François and Louise Soubirous were married on January 9, 1843. The family experienced many hard- ships and heartaches. Five of the nine children would die before reaching the age of ten. François worked in a mill, but lost his job in 1854. He then hired himself out as a day laborer. Because there was never enough money to make ends meet, Louise began to work for others at housekeeping, washing, and in the fields. In late 1844, a few months after Bernadette was born, her mother Louise suffered an accident with a fire that burned her chest. As Louise could no longer breast-feed her baby girl, Bernadette was sent to live with a nurse for about a year or so until she was weaned. In 1848, Bernadette’s father François lost sight in his left eye because of an accident. In the autumn of 1855, there was a cholera epidemic in Lourdes. In order that the Soubirous would have one mouth less to feed, Bernadette went to live in 1857 first with her godmother and then with the woman who had been her nurse. Meanwhile, the Soubirous family moved into a residence known as the “Jail,” which was an unclean and unhealthy room, twelve feet by fourteen feet, in an abandoned prison. At the end of March 1857, François was arrested and imprisoned for a few days on an accusation that he had stolen a piece of lumber. He had actually found an abandoned wooden plank. Charges were eventually dropped for lack of evidence when no one stepped forward to claim the lumber. Yet, there was gossip and François came to be known as a thief. Throughout these sufferings, the Soubirous fami- ly was strengthened by a life of prayer and mutual love. We can learn much from the poverty, sim- plicity, and example of love in this family. Bernadette always kept in touch with her loved ones. When living away from home in 1857, Berna- dette would visit her family every Sunday. She moved back with them at the beginning of 1858, not long before the apparitions began. From 1860 to 1866, as we have seen, Bernadette lived in a hos- pice run by the Sisters of Charity and regularly visited her family. In 1866, when she entered reli- gious life in the motherhouse in Nevers, Bernadette kept in touch with the family through writing and receiving letters. Love of family was very important to Bernadette, as it should be for all of us. In Lourdes, we learn the value of prayer, especially the rosary. Louise Soubirous testified that from a very early age Bernadette showed “a marked inclination towards piety.” During the month of May, Bernadette would make little shrines in honor of the Virgin Mary at home and in the fields. Her sister Toinette gave Bernadette a rosary in 1856, which she kept in the fold of her dress. Berna- dette went to Mass and received the sacraments, giving us good example to do the same. Proces- sions of pilgrims with lighted candles testify that prayer is not only personal, but also a public ex- pression of our faith.
