NATIONAL NEWS Finance Minister Arun Jaitley has presented the Union Budget for the year 2017-18 in the Lok Sabha on 1st February 2017. This is his fourth annual budget and the first budget after demonetization.

Finance Minister Arun Jaitley announced the launch of Swayam, an online education platform that will give students access to over 350 courses, while presenting the Union Budget today.

Finance Minister Arun Jaitley has introduced the Specified Bank Notes (Cessation of Liabilities) Bill 2017 in Lok Sabha. The Bill aims at replacing the note ban ordinance that extinguishes the liability of the government and the RBI on demonetised high-value notes.

To bring transparency in political funding and to curb black money, Finance Minister Arun Jaitley announced that maximum cash funding to parties will be limited to ₹2,000 per donor.

Indian Railways has unveiled the Antyodaya Express, a new train for unreserved passengers. The first Antyodaya Express is slated to start between Mumbai and Tatanagar (Jharkhand) and the second train between Ernakulam and Howrah.

The Arunachal Pradesh government has announced that it has implemented 'e-Cabinet', a paperless system to cut down on the time taken to hold a cabinet meeting.

The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA) has approved the enhancement of capacity from 20,000 MW to 40,000 MW of the Scheme for Development of Solar Parks and Ultra Mega Solar Power Projects.

The Centre has approved an investment of Rs 1,350 crore to Andhra Pradesh for improvement of basic urban infrastructure under the Atal Mission for Rejuvenation and Urban Transformation (AMRUT) over the next three fiscals.

The Centre has formed a 6-member committee to give a report on ways to improve India’s Haj policy and consider the issue of subsidy to the pilgrimage. Convener of the Committee is Afzal Amanullah (Former Consulate General of India, Jeddah).

The Delhi government has approved around 37% hike in the minimum wages for unskilled, semi-skilled and skilled persons.

The Gujarat Assembly has passed Gujarat Aadhar (Targeted Delivery of Financial and Other Subsidies, Benefits and Services) Bill, 2017. This bill seeks to empower the state government to use Aadhaar number as the sole identifier for the delivery of various subsidies and benefits in an effective and targeted manner.

The Jammu and Kashmir government has put a cap on the number of guests for a daughter's wedding at 500, and for a son's wedding at 400 starting April 1.

The Kalimpong subdivision of the Darjeeling hills became the 21st district of West Bengal. The Karnataka government passed the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (Karnataka Amendment) Bill, 2017, in the Legislative Assembly to legalize the traditional buffalo-racing sport Kambala.

The Supreme Court directed the Central government to link all mobile numbers to Aadhaar within a year. The Supreme Court introduced Middle Income Group Scheme (MIGS) a self-supporting scheme for providing legal services to the middle and relatively lower income groups.

The Union Cabinet chaired by the Prime Minister has approved 'Pradhan Mantri Gramin Digital Saksharta Abhiyan' (PMGDISHA) to make 6 crore rural households digitally literate. This is expected to be one of the largest digital literacy programmes in the world.
