General UCLA Catalog Record ID: 8168286 Biographical/Historical note Octavia Broske was born circa 1886, in Pennsylvania. She was an actress of both stage and silent film during the early 1900s. She was married to actor George Bancroft. She appeared on stage in a number of cities across the US including Boston, Chicago, Philadelphia, New York, and San Francisco, among others. Her stage credits include Belle of New York, Prince of Pilsen, Sultan of Sulu, Tillie's Nightmare, and A Waltz Dream, among others. She also appeared in silent films, including: The Great Adventure and She Loves and Lies. Octavia Broske died in 1967. George Bancroft was born in Philadelphia, PA on September 30, 1882. He was educated at Annapolis. He began his stage career as black face entertainer in minstrel shows, eventually going on to act in New York stage dramas and musical comedies such as Ave Maria and Underworld. He made his screen debut in 1921 appearing in The Journey's End. Bancroft was often cast as a villian and/or tough good guys. His film credits include Angels with Dirty Faces (1938), The Docks of New York (1928), Mr. Deeds Goes to Town (1936), Old Ironsides (1926), The Pony Express (1925), Stagecoach (1939), and Underworld (1927). He retired from acting in 1942 to become a rancher. George Bancroft died in 1956. Scope and Contents note The collection consists of material related to the careers of actors Octavia Broske and George Bancroft. The bulk of the collection is newspaper clippings documenting Broske's stage performaces including The Belle of New York, Florodora, The Folies Beregere, Girls Will Be Girls, Prince of Pilsen, Sultan of Sulu, and Tillie's Nightmare. Additionally, there are clippings representing Bancroft's work in Ave Maria and Underworld, and a very small amount of ephemera, and photographs. 'Old Ironsides' (1926), an epic silent adventure film, will be screened with live music on Sunday, May 23 at 2 p.m. at the Town Hall Theatre, 40 Main St., Wilton, N.H. The screening is free to the public; a donation of $10 per person is suggested to support the Town Hall Theatre's silent film series. The Town Hall Theatre continues to observe procedures to comply with all state and CDC public health guidelines. Capacity is limited to 50 percent; patrons are required to maintain social distance and wear masks until seated. Live music will be provided by Jeff Rapsis, a New Hampshire-based silent film accompanist. In advance of seeing the films themselves, Madalena would work with still photographs, press materials, and his passion for particular performers to create one-of-a-kind posters promoting larger-than-life subjects, all on a scale that could be clearly seen from cars passing the theater’s outdoor poster vitrines. Working alone over a four-year period and against deadlines that required as many as eight new posters a week for each change of bill, Madalena created over 1,400 original works before the end of his tenure, when the theater changed management. Approximately 250 of these posters survived when the artist himself rescued them from the trash behind the theater.

  • Memory and Popular Film
    Memory and popular film Inside Popular Film General editors Mark Jancovich and Eric Schaefer Inside Popular Film is a forum for writers who are working to develop new ways of analysing popular film. Each book offers a critical introduction to existing debates while also exploring new approaches. In general, the books give historically in- formed accounts of popular film, which present this area as altogether more complex than is commonly suggested by established film theories. Developments over the past decade have led to a broader understanding of film, which moves beyond the traditional oppositions between high and low culture, popular and avant-garde. The analysis of film has also moved beyond a concentra- tion on the textual forms of films, to include an analysis of both the social situations within which films are consumed by audiences, and the relationship between film and other popular forms. The series therefore addresses issues such as the complex inter- textual systems that link film, literature, art and music, as well as the production and consumption of film through a variety of hybrid media, including video, cable and satellite. The authors take interdisciplinary approaches, which bring together a variety of theoretical and critical debates that have developed in film, media and cultural studies. They neither embrace nor condemn popular film, but explore specific forms and genres within the contexts of their production and consumption.
