Restoration Other Piers 14 BUILDINGS AT RISK Heritage: We take a look at UK-wide pier restoration projects to see what lessons Queen’s Pier restorers can learn from them Pier pressure: breathing new life into a Victorian landmark Following on from last week’s Buildings at Risk article looking at the history of Ramsey’s Queen’s Pier, Simon Artymiuk looks at what the pier’s restorers can learn from efforts to maintain and restore some similar Victorian piers in Wales and England hen look- ing for inspiration for what a restored Ramsey Queen’s Pier could Wbecome, we need only look to the south across the Irish Sea, where a cluster of North Wales coastal resorts each have their own Victorian piers. The crowning glory of that area is Llandudno, which was developed as a resort by the Mostyn family in the 1840s and which has a long North Shore promenade in some ways reminiscent of Douglas seafront. What is more, its four-mile Marine Drive, completed in 1878 around the towering Great Orme headland (and which continues to operate as a one-way toll road for driv- ers to admire the coastal vis- tas) was the inspiration for the Isle of Man’s own Marine Drive between Douglas and Port So- derick. Predominantly constructed during the 19th Century in the context of expanding Victorian seaside resorts and railways, these structures were often erected as landing docks for pleasure steamers and other sea craft. Growing to accommodate the needs of day-trippers escaping the smog of the city, engineers began to incorporate bandstands, cafes and music halls into their designs, embracing the growing notion of ‘pleasure seeking’ by the seaside. Pierdom addresses the historical significance of these architectural structures placed in comparison with their modern interpretation and functionality. Roberts’ photographs of ruinous piers such as Birnbeck Pier (2012) are in contrast with those such as Ryde Pier (2012) in which the local community and everyday usage of the landscape is represented by a skate boarding park which dominates the composition. It is this socio-cultural element of the landscape that has sustained Roberts’ interest, revealing a deep fascination with the way humans interact with their environment, and in eccentric British pastimes. At the turn of the century the British coastline boasted over 100 piers, some modest and functional, others elegant, exotic Victorian structures thrusting out into the sea. Now under half remain, the others destroyed by fierce weather and fires, with many dismantled during the 2nd World War to prevent German landings.

University of York Department of History September 2012 3 Abstract Little academic research has been undertaken concerning Seaside Miniature Railways as they fall outside more traditional subjects such as standard gauge and narrow gauge railway history and development. This dissertation is the first academic study on the subject and draws together aspects of miniature railways, fairground and leisure culture. It examines their history from their inception within the newly developing fairground culture of the United States towards the end of the 19th. century and their subsequent establishment and development within the UK. The development of the seaside and fairground spectacular were the catalysts for the establishment of the SMR in the UK. Their development was largely due to two individuals, W. Bassett-Lowke and Henry Greenly who realized their potential and the need to ally them with a suitable site such as the seaside resort. Without their input there is no doubt that SMRs would not have developed as they did. When they withdrew from the culture subsequent development was firmly in the hands of a number of individual entrepreneurs. Although embedded in the fairground culture they were not totally reliant on it which allowed them to flourish within the seaside resort even though the traditional fairground was in decline.

    Simon Roberts has photographed every British pleasure pier there is – and several that there aren’t. Overleaf, Francis Hodgson celebrates this devotion to imperilled treasures 14 15 here are 58 surviving pleasure piers in Britain and Simon Roberts has photographed them all. He has also photographed some of the vanished ones, as you can see from his picture of Shanklin Pier on the Isle of Wight (on page 21), destroyed in the great storm which did so much damage in southern England on October 16, 1987. Roberts is a human geographer by training, and his study of piers is a natural development of his previous major work, We English, which looked at the changing patterns of leisure in a country in which a rising population and decreasing mass employment mean that more of us have more time upon our hands than ever before. We tend to forget that holidays are a relatively new phenomenon, but it was only after the Bank Holiday Act of 1871 that paid leave gradually became the norm, and cheap, easily reachable leisure resorts a necessity. Resorts were commercial propositions, and the pier was often a major investment to draw crowds.     Case Study 7 - Wales 7.1. Introduction The landscape of Wales is characterised by relatively low-lying coastal zones backed by a hinterland of high mountains and hills, which have been dissected by river valleys flowing from the uplands towards the sea. The Welsh coastal zone itself comprises a strip of land and its adjacent shoreline and marine environment, which varies in width depending on the natural environment and the management needs of the area. Parts of the Welsh coastal zone are recognised as being important natural habitats and environments. Along these beautiful coastlines, historical developments illustrate the history of the country dating back to Roman times. Later, numerous magnificent castles were built, which has resulted in Wales having an outstanding legacy in terms of its architectural heritage (McInnes & Benstead, 20131). 7.1.1. Geology & Geomorphology Within its land area of just over 23,200 sq. km (8,000 sq. m) and measuring some 256km (160m) by 96km (60m), elements of all the major geological systems can be found in Wales, ranging from the ancient Cambrian rocks through to the Holocene. Mountain-building over geological time together with structural effects including uplifting, folding, faulting and subsequently weathering and erosion, have resulted in a coastline of great interest and diversity, which displays a wide range of geomorphological features as well as creating a landscape of enormous scenic beauty. The mountainous interior was severely affected by glaciation, and from this hinterland rivers incised deeply as they flowed from the centre of the country down to the relatively low-lying coastline. The variety of the coastal geology of Wales, as well as the structural form of the exposures including the joint lines, bedding planes and the angles of dip of the strata, all have an influence on the appearance of the coastline and contribute to form the features that are so much admired.
