SPIRITUALLY-ORIENTED COUNSELLING – WHAT MAKES SANTOSHA YOGA UNIQUE Santosha is pleased to be able to offer our students spiritually-oriented counselling with Hamid Ebadi. Spiritually-oriented counselling is an invaluable therapy for everyone but particularly for the yoga aspirant because practicing yoga often breaks open doors of an emotional and psychological nature. For most people, the true causes of malaise and emotional distress requires a journey of self-discovery and inner quest along a healing and transformative path. Psychological conflicts, emotional disorders and the suffering they engender are often caused by disconnect from our true nature and unconscious identifications with early patterns of conditioning. We cannot free ourselves from what we are unaware of just as we cannot heal ourselves from what has not presented itself to be healed. Spiritually-oriented counselling aims at integrating psychological and spiritual work so that the light of awareness permeates the hidden recesses of our personality and allows for a transformative process to unfold so that we can pursue more freely our unrealized potentials and live fully. This counselling is all encompassing, taking into account both the psychological and spiritual dimensions of a person, both the conditioned personality and the unconditioned being that we all are. It encourages people to become aware of their responsibility as creators of their personal destiny and to manifest the full scope of their own lives. It helps them experience their true nature, serenity, internal peace and be in harmony with their environment and in their relationships. For more information about Hamid’s methods and his personal journey, please see our website at http://yogasurfingretreats.com/santosha-yoga/spiritual-oriented-counselling/ or contact Hamid directly at [email protected]. Yogasanagalu (translation project) On this page an intro to the project with links _ The ongoing translation of the Yogasanagalu _ Some notes and comments that have come up from the blog posts _ A post with some suggestions on how to practice the sequences in the Yogasanagalu. Intro to the project Krishnamacharya wrote his book Yoga Makaranda in 1934 in the Kannada language, the Tamil edition was published in 1938. Krishnamacharya's Yogasanagalu was first published in the Kannada language in 1941, the 3rd edition was published in 1972 K. Pattabhi Jois wrote his book, Yoga Mālā, in Kannada in 1958, and it was published in 1962, but was not published in English until 1999 Yogasanagalu along with Krishnamacharya's other book Yoga Makaranda (downloadable HERE), was originally written in Mysore while Krishnamacharya was teaching at the Mysore Palace and while Sri K Pattabhi Jois was his student. YOGASANAGALU T. KRISHNAMACHARYA Introduction I did not attempt a detailed review of all ancient yoga treatises since it will make this book very long and perhaps cause boredom to the readers. Please forgive. This writing is mainly based on the following texts: Patanjalayogasutra Hathayogapradipika Rajayogaratnakara Yogakuranti Upanishads related to yoga Learning’s from my Guru and self-experience About the Second Edition This is the second edition. Added additional text to one section. I trust that by reading this, readers and practitioners will be able to overcome their doubts. With a strong conviction, I suggest and request that teachers will be able to teach the essence of yoga to their students.

When we think of yoga, thinking of those people sitting still for long time yet about 80% of modern yoga classes are vinyasa, they are fluid. Confidential (Only for Members) | 21stCentury.yoga CONTENT Vinyasa Krama means a step by step progression into something, or to a certain goal. vinyasa is a great exploration of meditation in movement, eventually coming to stillness this is the goal. In Sanskrit, vi, meaning “order,” nyasa, meaning “placement," and karma, meaning “succession.” The name for this type of yoga practice is often shortened to vinyasa. Vinyasa refers to practicing a sequence of asanas that are synchronized with the breath. Each movement in the vinyasa krama sequence is linked to an inhalation or an exhalation and each asana becomes a step within the flow. The yogi learns to listen to body and when it is ready to advance to a more challenging asana. Rather than performing each asana as an independent pose disconnected from the whole, vinyasa krama mimics the flowing energy of the universe. The mind, body and breath are unified into a state of harmony. Vinyasa krama also uses variations of each asana to open the potential of the mind and body. Confidential (Only for Members) | 21stCentury.yoga HISTORY Many people who are interested in Yoga, have heard about Krishnamacharya, the teacher of Pattabhi Jois and BKS Iyengar.

Mandala Brahmana upanishad OM. The great Muni Yajnavalkya went to Aditya-Loka (the sun’s world) and saluting him (the Purusha of the Sun) said: “O Revered Sir, describe to me the Atman-Tattva (the Tattva or Truth of Atman).” (To which) Narayana (viz., the Purusha of the sun) replied: “I shall describe the eight- fold Yoga together with Jnana. The conquering of cold and heat as well as hunger and sleep, the preserving of (sweet) patience and unruffledness ever and the restraining of the organs (from sensual objects) - all these come under (or are) Yama. Devotion to one’s Guru, love of the true path, enjoyment of objects producing happiness, internal satisfaction, freedom from association, living in a retired place, the controlling of the Manas and the not longing after the fruits of actions and a state of Vairagya - all these constitute Niyama. The sitting in any posture pleasant to one and clothed in tatters (or bark) is prescribed for Asana (posture). Inspiration, restraint of breath and expiration, which have respectively 16, 64 and 32 (Matras) constitute Pranayama (restraint of breath). The restraining of the mind from the objects of senses is Pratyahara (subjugation of the senses). The contemplation of the oneness of consciousness in all objects is Dhyana. The mind having been drawn away from the objects of the senses, the fixing of the Chaitanya (consciousness) (on one alone) is Dharana. The forgetting of oneself in Dhyana is Samadhi. He who thus knows the eight subtle parts of Yoga attains salvation. Tejo bindu upanishad 30. But it should be directed towards that seat (of Brahman) wherein the cessation of seer, the seen and sight will take place and not towards the tip of the nose.
