The scholarship and clinical application of Yoga exemplifies the way U.S. psychology continues to give lived authority to imperialism as part of the neoliberal agenda. Through a hermeneutic literature analysis of two source Yogic texts and peer-reviewed articles that exemplify the dominant discourse on Yoga in U.S. psychology, this dissertation identified themes that describe culturally embedded presentations of Yoga and their sociopolitical implications. Through interpretation, Yoga was conceptualized as: (a) a 5,000 year-old tradition that prescribes a life path to achieving one’s full potential and includes (but is not limited to) an expression of psychology unique to Yoga that encompasses a complex moral framework, theory of mind, conceptualization of suffering and illness, and rich collection of healing technologies; (b) a phenomenological state of being, or unwavering realization of the self as undifferentiated unified consciousness; and (c) an artifact of U.S. psychology that enacts dissociated, unformulated, and unarticulated sociopolitical arrangements and events. Themes were presented as dialogue, allowing Yogic theory, philosophy, psychology, and morality to call into question facets of U.S. psychology as they relate to the human condition, psyche, mental illness, and healing iv technologies. Within the scope of the dissertation, there were four articulated pathways for Yoga to influence U.S. psychology without reverting back to the unconscious inclination to dissociate or appropriate: (a) participate in the tradition of Yoga rather than trying to possess it; (b) acknowledge what the moral framework of Yoga highlights about the complicity of U.S. psychology in the neoliberal agenda; (c) discontinue practices that normalize and sustain intellectual imperialism; and (d) commit to disciplinary refinement and integrity. Also addressed were the limitations of this project and fruitful avenues of further inquiry, including possible steps towards disciplinary refinement and integrity. I have learned to balance authenticity and impression management when confronted with hypocrisy and the tension between social justice theory and the pressure to conform to those in power. I am thankful to professors like Dr. Phil Cushman, who helped me see my experience as emblematic of larger cultural and historical trends. Learning to critically evaluate the moral and ontological assumptions of psychology has allowed me to situate the lived experiences of my patients and avoid the allure of overly simplistic diagnostic procedures and treatment approaches.     Effect of Rasayana Therapy on Ageing: An Ayurvedic Perspective1 R.D.H Kulatunga * Abstract Ageing is a multidimensional process of physical, psychological and social change. Ayurveda Rasayana2 therapy has given powerful contribution to overcome age related disorders and act essentially on nutrition dynamics and rejuvenate the body and the mind. The present study has been carried out to assess the effect of Guduchyadi Rasayana3 on Agnibala4, Dehabala5 and Sattvabala6 on elderly individuals. 138 patients were registered to the study and divided in to two groups. The drugs were prepared as granules form and administered three times per day and continued for three months. Result of the study revealed that the trial group obtained statistically sig- nificant improvement in the signs and symptoms of Agnibala, Dehabala and Sattvabala on elderly individuals. A severe and rare fungal illness, Mucormycosis also known as “black fungus”, affecting some coronavirus patients is causing a double blow to the country. Mucormycosis infections are more severe in people with comorbid conditions like Diabetes, Hypertension etc. and immune- compromised state. Because of the increase in the number of patients with this deadly infection, many states have declared Mucormycosis as an epidemic and has become a matter of huge concern. Mucormycosis is classified mainly into five types depending on the part of the body affected. The clinical features described of Rhino-orbito-cerebral Mucor mycosis are similar to Raktaja Pratishyaya and Krimija Shiroroga (unilateral facial swelling, Headaches, Nasal congestion, Nasal discharge, Fever etc). Presentation of Pulmonary Mucor mycosis are very much similar to Kshayaja Kasa, (Cough with pericardial chest pain, foul smelling, greenish, purulent, mucoid and blood stained/ haemoptysis sputum and cough associated with fever (Jvaro-mishrakriti) or chest pain (Parshvaruka) or recurrent coryza (Pinasa) are the clinical features found in Pulmonary Mucourmycosis. The Gastrointestinal Mucormycosis can be included under the spectrum of Udara roga especially Sannipatika udara roga and pathogenesis of Disseminated mucormycosis in later phase can be compared with Dushtavrana where as Cutaneous mucormycosis can be correlated with Kushtha and Visarpa.

  • Detoxification and Traditional Hatha Yoga(New)
    Detoxification in Hatha Yoga and Ayurveda By Mas Vidal Introduction The Hatha Yoga Pradipika (HYP) is a unique text of the Nath yogis that enumerates some interesting methods for purifying the body. Swami Svatmarama, the chief disciple of Swami Goraknath authored it during the medieval period. Evidently, Matsyendranath, founder of the Nath (synonym for Shiva) cult along with Goraknath understood clearly the importance of mind- body purification as requisites for spiritual evolution and thus created a six-fold system (shat- karma) of detoxification. This popular yoga text is composed of four chapters. In brief, the first chapter deals with postural yoga (asana); chapter two deals with the six actions of purification (shatkarma and pranayama); chapter three describes the physical gestures and energy locks (mudras and bandhas), and chapter four discusses spiritual liberation (samadhi). The placement of the shat-karmas (purification practices) in the second chapter prior to the last chapter on samadhi (liberation) indicates the importance of having a clean bodily house to attain spiritual freedom. This article highlights the correlation the detoxifying actions described in chapter two of the HYP with those mentioned in the main Ayurvedic text, Charaka Samhita. Interestingly, the HYP methods have much in common with those used in Ayurveda, yoga’s sister science of self-healing. Similarly, Ayurvedic mastermind Charaka, devised a five-fold system (pancha karma) for purification of the doshas (vata, pitta & kapha) to improve the mind-body relationship.     What is Moksha? by AiR What is Moksha? by AiR PREFACE Moksha is supposed to be the most spiritual word in the Hindu religion. It is said that Moksha is the nal goal of every human being. Everybody speaks of Moksha. It is so common to read about Moksha in every scripture, in every good religious book that we place our hands on. But not many people understand the true meaning of Moksha. What is Moksha all about? Translated, it means Liberation, Enlightenment or Nirvana. But what is Liberation? From what must we be liberated? The common man is so busy in the world today that he does not even realize that this world is bondage. This world is like quick sand in which we are sinking and one ne day when our end arrives, we will sink only to be reborn and go through the cycle of death and rebirth again and again. Very few are fortunate to stop and to realize the truth, to ponder upon the fact that this world is a bondage and that we are actually lost in the delusion of this world, in the pleasure, power and possessions. We are imprisoned! The one who realizes this truth starts his journey towards Moksha, towards Liberation and Enlightenment. It is this Seeker who understands the meaning of Moksha and Liberation, who has the courage to start the journey to be liberated, only such few Divine Souls get the opportunity of understanding of Moksha, achieving and living with it. Rest of humanity lives to die and the cycle continues with Moksha remaining a distant dream.
