Arsenal FC's first opponents in the 2010/11 UEFA Champions League are a Portuguese side who have strong connections with the London outfit. SC Braga, nicknamed the Arsenalistas because the clubs share the same colours, make their debut appearance in the competition proper at the Arsenal Stadium. Previous meetings • The sides have never met before in UEFA competition but Portuguese teams have not fared well when visiting Arsenal in recent years. In last season's UEFA Champions League round of 16, FC Porto lost 5-0 in north London, Nicklas Bendtner grabbing a hat-trick and Samir Nasri and Emmanuel Eboué both joining him on the scoresheet. • Porto also lost 4-0 at Arsenal in the previous season's group stage, when scored twice, and 2-0 in the 2006/07 UEFA Champions League group stage, the Gunners' first match in the competition proper at the new stadium following their move from Highbury. Only SL Benfica of Arsenal's Portuguse Liga visitors left with a victory, winning 3-1 in the 1991/92 European Champion Clubs' Cup second round second leg. • Braga have twice been involved in fixtures at nearby White Hart Lane. On both occasions Tottenham Hotspur FC were victorious, coming through 3-2 in the 2006/07 UEFA Cup round of 16 to complete a 6-4 aggregate triumph and winning 6-0 in the 1984/85 UEFA Cup first round second leg – Braga's heaviest defeat in UEFA competition – and 9-0 overall. In four visits to England Braga have suffered three defeats, their most recent trip – to Bolton Wanderers FC in the 2007/08 UEFA Cup group stage – ending 1-1. Match background • Arsenal, who are taking part in their 13th UEFA Champions League campaign, have not failed to progress beyond the initial group stage in the last ten seasons. In the last three years they have made it through to the quarter-finals or better. • Only Manchester United FC, who beat Arsenal in the 2008/09 semi-finals, have won in north London in the 24 UEFA Champions League games, including qualifiers, at the Arsenal Stadium. Before United's win Arsène Wenger's men had boasted a five-year unbeaten home run in the competition, bridging their two grounds. • Last season Arsenal won all five home games, play-off round included, before FC Barcelona held them to a 2-2 draw in the quarter-finals en route to a 6-3 aggregate win. They started the group stage with a 3-2 success at R. Standard de Liège, their fifth Matchday 1 victory in six attempts. The 2008/09 campaign featured a 1-1 draw away to FC Dynamo Kyiv in their first game. • Braga lost home (1-2) and away (0-2) to IF Elfsborg in the 2009/10 UEFA Europa League third qualifying round. • The Portuguese side finished second in the 2009/10 Liga and ousted Celtic FC in the third qualifying round, a 3-0 first-leg win at home enough despite a 2-1 reverse in Glasgow. Sevilla FC were then shocked in the play-offs, Braga winning 1-0 at home and 4-3 in Spain to seal a famous triumph. Team ties • When, in 1921, Braga changed their team shirts from two large green and white vertical stripes, they took Arsenal's red-and-white colours as their inspiration. Since then they have been known as Minho's Arsenalistas (Arsenal from Minho).

Arsenal FC: Arsène Wenger Date of birth: 22 October 1949 Nationality: French Playing career: AS Mutzig, FC Mulhouse, AS Vauban, RC Strasbourg Coaching career: RC Strasbourg (assistant coach), AS Cannes (assistant coach), AS Nancy-Lorraine, AS Monaco FC, Nagoya Grampus Eight, Arsenal FC • Not the most successful of players, Arsène Wenger has more than made up for that as a coach, turning Arsenal into one of Europe's top teams. • Born in Strasbourg, Wenger worked at Strasbourg and Cannes before Nancy-Lorraine offered him his big break. He impressed sufficiently to be offered the job as coach of Monaco in 1987. • Within a year Monaco scooped the French championship and Wenger the Coach of the Year award. After reportedly turning down France and FC Bayern München, he moved on to Japan and enjoyed tremendous success with Nagoya Grampus Eight. • Appointed by Arsenal in September 1996, Wenger became the first non-Briton to win the in 1998, adding the first of four FA Cup triumphs. The Gunners lost the 2000 UEFA Cup final to Galatasaray SK but claimed another double in 2002, and in 2004 played some thrilling attacking football en route to becoming the first team since 1889 to negotiate a top-flight season unbeaten. • Wenger nearly topped all his achievements by taking Arsenal to the 2006 UEFA Champions League final, only for FC Barcelona to come from behind to win 2-1. Arsenal's move to their new stadium later that year was also instigated by Wenger.

SC Braga: Domingos Paciência Date of birth: 2 January 1969 Nationality: Portuguese Playing career: FC Porto (twice), CD Tenerife Coaching career: UD Leiria, A. Académica de Coimbra, SC Braga • Joined Porto aged 13 and went on to tremendous success with the club, winning seven league titles – and being voted Portugal's footballer of the year in 1990 – before departing for Tenerife in 1997. A striker, Domingos spent a couple of years in Spain, returning to Porto for two final seasons – winning the Portuguese Cups in both campaigns to take his total to five – before hanging up his boots in 2001. • Domingos, whose 35 caps for Portugal brought nine goals including one against Croatia at EURO '96, promptly moved into coaching, working his way up to take charge of Porto's reserves. • His first senior post, at Leiria, followed in summer 2006. Decided to step down in March of the following year with the club eighth in the Liga. • Appointed at Académica in September 2007 following Manuel Machado's dismissal and led the club to seventh place in 2008/09 – their best finish in Portugal's top flight since 1985. • On 21 June 2009 Domingos replaced Jorge Jesus at Braga on a two-year contract and made an immediate impact, steering his new team to a club-best second place in the Liga in his first season. That earned a UEFA Champions League qualifying berth, defeats of Celtic FC and Sevilla FC in summer 2010 securing Braga's first group-stage campaign.

• UEFA Champions League: Group stage milestones Holders FC Internazionale Milano are looking to avoid becoming the first defending champions to fail to get through a group stage since the UEFA Champions League began. (This record, like the others, includes the seasons between 1999/2000 and 2002/03 that featured a second group stage). In 1992/93, FC Barcelona were the reigning European Champion Clubs' Cup holders and were beaten 4-3 on aggregate in the second round by PFC CSKA Moskva. S.S. Lazio goalkeeper Marco Ballotta became the oldest player to compete in the UEFA Champions League in 2007/08 when he featured against Olympiacos FC on Matchday 1 at the age of 43 years and 168 days. The record was previously held by Alessandro Costacurta, the AC Milan defender who played against AEK Athens FC in 2006/07 at the age of 40 years and 211 days. Ballotta was aged 43 years 252 days when he featured against Real Madrid CF on Matchday 6. is the oldest player to score in the competition, aged 36 years and 339 days, having found the net for Manchester United FC in their 3-2 defeat of Olympiacos on 23 October 2002. Celestine Babayaro is the youngest player to have appeared in the UEFA Champions League. He was 16 years and 87 days when he started for RSC Anderlecht against FC Steaua Bucureşti on 23 November 1994. He was then sent off in the 37th minute. Barcelona and Manchester United have both finished as group winners on 11 occasions, one more than Milan and Real Madrid. Four teams have recorded six successive victories in a UEFA Champions League group stage: Milan (1992/93), Paris Saint-Germain FC (1994/95), FC Spartak Moskva (1995/96) and Barcelona (2002/03, first group stage). Ten teams have gone through a UEFA Champions League group stage without picking up a single point, including Maccabi Haifa FC and Debreceni VSC in 2009/10. The other eight are: FC Dynamo Kyiv (2007/08), PFC Levski Sofia (2006/07), SK Rapid Wien (2005/06), RSC Anderlecht (2004/05), FC Spartak Moskva and Bayer 04 Leverkusen (2002/03, first and second group stage respectively), Fenerbahçe SK (2001/02, first group stage) and 1. FC Košice (1997/98). Manchester United scored 20 goals in the 1998/99 group stage, more than any other side has managed. Barcelona scored 19 times in the 1999/2000 first group stage. Debrecen conceded 19 goals in their six outings in 2009/10, equalling the record let in during a group stage set by Dynamo Kyiv (2007/08) and Ferencvárosi TC in 1995/96. No team has ever gone through a UEFA Champions League group stage without conceding a goal. Milan (1992/93), AFC Ajax (1995/96), Juventus (1996/97 and 2004/05), Chelsea FC (2005/06), Liverpool FC (2005/06) and Villarreal CF (2005/06) all let in just one. Before their 3-1 win against Sporting Clube de Portugal on Matchday 6 of the 2006/07 campaign, FC Spartak Moskva went 22 games without a victory in the competition, surpassing the unwanted record set by AEK Athens FC on Matchday 3 of the same campaign. The lowest total for a team qualifying from the group stage is seven points. The first to do it, since three points for a win was introduced in 1995/96, were Legia Warszawa that same season before Bayer Leverkusen managed it in 1999/2000 and Liverpool in 2001/02. FC Lokomotiv Moskva and eventual finalists Juventus both progressed with seven points in 2002/03, a feat achieved by Rangers FC and Werder Bremen in 2005/06.
