Fatih Terim's men have subsequently posted two victories and a draw, climbing to second place in Group H. • Sitting level with CFR 1907 Cluj on seven points, Galatasaray hold the head-to-head advantage and need only match CFR's result at Manchester United FC to wrap up the runners-up spot and advance to the last 16 for the first time since 2001/02. Match background • Galatasaray had not won away from home in the UEFA Champions League proper for a decade prior to their matchday four success at CFR. That 3-1 victory was their first in ten attempts, dating back to September 2002, but they are now looking to make it two in a row. • Braga are playing only for pride but will want to give their home supporters something to cheer after defeats at the Estádio Municipal against CFR and United. • Braga lost 2-0 at home to Beşiktaş JK in the 2011/12 UEFA Europa League round of 32, losing Hélder Barbosa to a red card. Lima got the only goal of the Istanbul return as Braga were eliminated. • Braga's only home victory against Turkish opposition was a 3-0 second-leg triumph over Sivasspor in the 2008 UEFA Intertoto Cup, Matheus, Roland Linz and Luis Aguiar scoring. Paulo César is the sole survivor of that tie, having featured in the 2-0 first-leg success. • This is Galatasaray's second away encounter with Portuguese opposition after a 2008/09 UEFA Cup group stage visit to SL Benfica, when Emre Aşık and Ümit Karan earned them a 2-0 victory. Sabri Sarıoğlu, Hakan Balta and Milan Baroš all played, with Quim in Benfica's goal. Team ties • Terim oversaw a 2-0 UEFA EURO 2008 group stage defeat by Portugal as coach of a Turkey team including Hakan Balta, Sabri and Hamit Altıntop. • Braga's assistant coach Fernando Couto scored in Portugal's 1-0 victory over Turkey in the EURO '96 group stage and also played in a 2-0 success in the countries' UEFA EURO 2000 quarter-final. Quim was on the bench for the latter game. • Baroš made his 93rd and final Czech Republic appearance in the 1-0 UEFA EURO 2012 quarter-final defeat by a Portugal team that included substitute Custódio. • Albert Riera scored past Quim as his RCD Espanyol side beat Benfica 3-2 in Spain – and on aggregate – in the 2006/07 UEFA Cup quarter-finals. • Hamit visited Braga with FC Bayern München for a 1-1 draw in the 2007/08 UEFA Cup group stage. In that season's first round he faced Rúben Amorim's CF Os Belenenses, scoring the second goal in a 2-0 win in Lisbon. • Last season Amorim featured in Benfica's 2-0 home defeat of Trabzonspor AŞ in the UEFA Champions League third qualifying round, and later for Braga against Beşiktaş. • Emmanuel Eboué was in the Arsenal FC team that overwhelmed Braga 6-0 in the Portuguese club's first UEFA Champions League group stage game in September 2010. Hugo Viana, Paulo César, Alan, Hélder Barbosa and Mossoró played for Braga that night. Eboué also appeared in Arsenal's 2-0 loss in the reverse fixture. • Including matches with Beşiktaş, Fenerbahçe and Trabzonspor, Burak Yılmaz has faced Portuguese opponents six times and, after five defeats and one draw, is still seeking a first victory. • Viana cancelled out Johan Elmander's opener when a Portugal side also including Custódio beat Sweden 3-2 in an Olympic play-off game at the 2004 UEFA European Under-21 Championship finals. Elmander had scored twice in Sweden's 3-1 group stage win against the Portuguese. • Viana's Newcastle United FC beat Elmander's NAC Breda 6-0 on aggregate in the 2003/04 UEFA Cup first round. • In June, Umut Bulut scored twice in Turkey's 3-1 friendly win at a Portugal team that included substitute Custódio. Last updated 04/12/12 1:22:46CET 3 Match background SC Braga - Galatasaray AŞ Wednesday 5 December 2012 - 20.45CET (19.45 local time) MATCH PRESS KIT Estádio Municipal de Braga, Braga Match facts Braga UEFA Champions League statistics • Alan is the competition's joint top scorer with five goals alongside Lionel Messi, Cristiano Ronaldo and Burak Yılmaz. • Braga lost 2-0 to CFR 1907 Cluj on matchday one despite having 35 shots, 23 on target. • Beto and Custódio have played every minute of Braga's group stage campaign. • Douglão is banned following his matchday five dismissal; Custódio's next yellow card will incur a suspension. Miscellaneous • Braga ended FC Porto's 18-match unbeaten start to the season on Friday, a 2-1 win booking a place in the Portuguese Cup quarter-finals. Trailing 1-0, the hosts struck twice after André Castro's 71st-minute dismissal. • Braga conceded in the 90th and 93rd minutes at home to Porto on 25 November as they went down 2-0. Three points off the Liga summit two games ago, José Peseiro's side are now nine adrift of Porto and SL Benfica. • Paulo Vinícius has not featured since 28 October because of a thigh problem. • A club record seven Braga players featured in Portugal's 2-2 friendly draw with Gabon in Libreville last month: Hélder Barbosa, Custódio, Beto, Rúben Micael, Rúben Amorim, Hugo Viana and Éder. Barbosa made his debut as a 79th-minute replacement for Custódio. • Zé Luís is likely to be on duty at the 2013 Africa Cup of Nations in January and February as the Cape Verde Islands make their debut. Galatasaray UEFA Champions League statistics • Galatasaray's 3-1 triumph at CFR 1907 Cluj on matchday four ended a run of nine games without an away win in the UEFA Champions League proper, having lost eight and drawn one since beating FC Lokomotiv Moskva 2-0 on 18 September 2002. • Burak Yılmaz is the competition's joint top scorer with five goals alongside Lionel Messi, Cristiano Ronaldo and Alan. • Burak became only the second Turkish player to score a UEFA Champions League hat-trick on matchday four, following Tuncay Şanlı in Fenerbahçe SK's 3-0 victory at home to United on 8 December 2004. • Burak has this season become the first Turkish player to represent four different clubs in the UEFA Champions League. He had previously featured for Beşiktaş JK, Fenerbahçe and Trabzonspor AŞ. • Fernando Muslera, Dany Nounkeu and Selçuk İnan have played every minute of Galatasaray's group stage campaign. Miscellaneous • Felipe Melo was sent off eight minutes from time on Friday as Galatasaray were held 1-1 at home to Gaziantepspor, Fatih Terim's 250th league match in charge of the club in his third spell as coach. • Umut Bulut (11) and Burak (13) have scored 24 of Galatasaray's 41 goals in all competitions this season.
