World Day of Migrants and Refugees: This Sunday, September 29th, we celebrate the 105th World Day of Migrants and Refugees. The theme of ' Message is "It is not just about migrants". In this message, the Holy Father reminds us that "it is not only the cause of migrants that is at stake; it is not just about them, but about all of us, and about the present and future of the human family. Migrants, especially those who are most vulnerable, help us to read the 'signs of the times'. Through them, the Lord is calling us to conversion, to be set free from exclusivity, indifference and the throw-away culture. Through them, the Lord invites us to embrace fully our Christian life and to contribute, each according to his or her proper vocation, to the building up of a world that is more and more in accord with God's plan." TWENTY -S IXTH S UNDAY IN O RDINARY T IME S EPTEMBER 29, 2019 RCIA (The Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults) Program: RCIA 2019-2020 will begin next Sunday, October 6th at 9:30 am in the Rectory. 2019 Traveling Rosary Congress: From October 6th-12th, the Archdiocese of Hartford is hosting a Traveling Rosary Congress, seven days of around-the-clock Eucharistic Adoration and Hourly Rosary with each day hosted at a different location in response to Our Lady of Fatima’s call to conversion, consecration, and prayer. It is a Catholic call to help establish peace in our cities, nation, and world and to console the hearts of Jesus and Mary in a spirit of reparation. All are encouraged to participate in this powerful opportunity for prayer and renewal! Please consider scheduling an hour of Adoration by calling the number listed or simply stop in to pray any length of time at the following sites:

Rosary Rally: The 30th annual Archdiocesan Rosary Rally will be held on Sunday, October 6th from 2-3:30 pm at the Basilica of the in Waterbury. The event will feature a procession, rosary, talk, and benediction. Auxiliary Bishop Juan Miguel Betancourt, SEMV will speak about Mary’s role in history. The Rosary Rally is free and open to the public. For more information, please call Lorraine at 203-736-9606.

Safety, Security and Access: The new entrance and elevator are now fully functional, so you may park in the Asylum avenue lot and enter the Cathedral through the west entrance. This makes access to the Cathedral much easier. So that everyone who comes to the Cathedral may pray and worship in peace, we each need to do our part. Obviously we abide by the norm, “If you see something, say something!” As a parish located in the city and with our doors (literally) open to all, extra vigilance is needed. Should you be approached by someone asking for money, please tell one of the priests, one of the two security guards, Peter our Sacristan or one of the ushers or other liturgical ministers. We have procedures in place for assisting those in need or those who might just be “panhandling.” It normally is not a good idea to give cash and please do not agree to give anyone you do not know a ride in your car. Also parents are asked NOT to allow children to go the bathrooms by themselves. They must be accompanied by an adult. Now with the new and much-needed addition, containing an elevator and restrooms, it will be more difficult to know who is actually in the Cathedral at a given moment. Do not leave items unattended in the pews when you go forward to receive Holy Communion. TWENTY -S IXRH S UNDAY IN O RDINARY T IME S EPTEMBER 29, 2019 2019 Mission Cooperative Appeal: Please welcome Father Joseph T. Chacko back to the Cathedral of Saint Joseph for the 2019 Mission Cooperative Appeal! He is at all weekend Masses on September 28th & 29th to speak about the good works of the Diocese Balasore located in the northeast part of India, close to the Archdiocese of Calcutta. Established in 1990, Balasore is a relatively young diocese with a Catholic population of 30,000 and a total population of about 9 million. As in the case with all of India, Catholics in Balasore are a minority and they are often persecuted. The parishes, missions, schools, and health clinics are served by 70 priests, 146 women religious, and 85 lay catechists. The Catholic population largely lives in poverty with a high rate of illiteracy. Education and empowerment of the youth are of great importance for the future of the diocese. Health services in the rural areas are very much needed. Being poor, most of the people can contribute very little for the support of the Church, even when they have good will. Thus the diocese does depend on outside financial assistance for carrying out many of its pastoral and developmental works. Father Chacko thanks our Cathedral of St. Joseph parish for our kind support of these efforts in 2016 and this weekend!

Fourth Annual Pilgrimage for Latinos: Sponsored by the Knights of Malta, the Cathedral of Saint Joseph will once again host a Pilgrimage for Latinos on Saturday, October 5th from 9:30 am-1:30 pm. The pilgrimage is offered as an opportunity to pray together for hope and healing of our own spiritual or temporal needs and those of all our brothers and sisters. Principal celebrant of the Eucharist will be Auxiliary Bishop Juan Miguel Betancourt, SEMV. Some events of this day will include: Opening Prayer and Recitation of the Holy Rosary in honor of the Blessed Virgin Mary, a conference, individual blessings of all present, Holy Mass, celebration of the Eucharist, lunch, and faith sharing. Collaborating in the preparation of this day of prayer and celebration are the Knights of Malta; Secular Order of the Servants of Mary; Movement of the Cursillos of Christianity; Charismatic Movement; John XXIII Movement; and Apostolic Group: Coffee with the Fragrance of Jesus. All are welcome! Please call 860-205-2216 to RSVP.

Virginius Barkauskas Sacred Sounds Concert: Join us on Saturday, October 5th at 5 pm as we welcome Virginius Barkauskas to the Cathedral of Saint Joseph! He will perform Baltic music of Mikalojus Konstantinas Čiurlionis and Juozas Naujalis as well as music by Vierne, Bach, Widor, Gjeilo, and Tournemire. A Lithuanian concert organist and Director of Music at St. Elizabeth of Hungary Roman in Melville, NY, Mr. Barkauskas has performed in many Cathedrals throughout the world and recital venues such as Alice Tully Hall-Lincoln Center and National Philharmonic Hall in Vilnius, Lithuania.

Respect Life Mass: The Pro-Life Ministry of the Archdiocese of Hartford and our Cathedral Pro-Life Committee invite you to attend the Annual Respect Life Mass with Archbishop Leonard P. Blair. It will be held next Sunday, October 6th at 11 am at the Cathedral of Saint Joseph. Parish pro-life representatives, pro-life advocates, and all those who are dedicated to the dignity of the human person and reverence for every life are invited to attend! Next weekend, the Church celebrates Respect Life Sunday, kicking off Respect Life Month. Join Catholics nationwide in celebrating throughout October. Learn more about upholding the sanctity of life at respectlife.org/respect-life-month. The following excerpt taken from the Letter of the Chairman, U.S. Conference of Catholic , Committee on Pro-Life Activities, explains our mission. “… This year’s theme, Christ Our Hope: In Every Season of Life , i s particularly suited for the times in which we live. The attacks on human life seem to grow more numerous and callous by the day. Despite these challenges, we know that Christ has conquered sin and death once and for all. Through our Christian hope in the Resurrection, we are given the grace to persevere in faith. Our sacrifices on behalf of the Gospel of Life can contribute to the redemption of this current culture of death.” DAYS WITHOUT PIZZA MAKES ONE WEAK!
