    THE VETERAN TREES OF WARWICKSHIRE Steven Falk, 2011 An ancient oak at Ragley Park THE VETERAN TREES OF WARWICKSHIRE Introduction Traditionally, much fuss has been made of old buildings and other historic man-made structures in our countryside and built environment. Rather neglected amongst all of this until recently has been concern over some of our oldest living features, veteran trees. Through a series of historic circumstances, the British countryside has come to support a far greater density of old trees than most parts of either Europe or lowland North America. They survive in our ancient hedges (which can be of medieval origin or older), former deer parks, and sometimes perched on the sides of steep hills where various potentially damaging agricultural activities have failed to reach them. Many have seen the landscape around them change out of all recognition as they have become swallowed up by urban sprawl or changing land-use. Deer parks may have become replaced by business parks or golf courses but the original trees sometimes survive e.g. at Stoneleigh Park. Rural hedgerows may now be urban property boundaries. This results in an often incongruous modern location for many old trees. However, it also means that such trees furnish valuable clues about the history of an area, firing the imaginations of local people and furnishing a stronger sense of place and local identity. Imagine Baginton without its great oak. Unfortunately changing circumstances also result in much loss and damage and makes veteran tree conservation particularly challenging in a world where health and safety and legal liability carry a lot of sway.

Notes for A DRIAN OR ROBERT DE LUCY : Information on the earliest records relating to the Lucy family at this time:- Richardo de Luceio (presumed son of Adrian) is first mentioned in February 1131 together with his mother Aveline, kinswomen and heiress of William Ghot or Goth, in the charter of Seéz. The surname Goth is apparently difficult to read in the original. It could actually read 'Goz'. Horace Round considered 'Goz' to be variant of 'Goiz' and 'Guiz', recognised variants of 'Gouviz' and 'Gouvis'. It should also be noted that Thurstan Goz was viscount of the encompassing county of Hiémois between 1017 and 1025 and Lord of Falaise. There is also a record in a charter regarding Sheppey Monastery c1131 referring to a fee and a half of plough-land of Richard de Lucy in the Isles of Sheppey and Grain, acquired by William Archbishop of Canterbury (1123-1136), from Aveline, the mother of the aforesaid Richard de Lucy of Newington.

    THE NEWSLETTER FROM HAMPTON LUCY, CHARLECOTE AND LOXLEY PARISHES Issue No: 148 April 2013 Charlecote Village Hall Wall-Hanging The Charlecote wall-hanging, which will be made from twenty five panels of scenes and relevant aspects of Charlecote village and Park, all worked wool on canvas by residents. The project is progressing very well and regular workshops are held so that the ‘stitchers’ can admire each other's work and sort out any problems. Since the project began in November, one member of the group, Maddie Thorpe, has married and another, Judith Harris, has given birth to beautiful twins. The photograph shows Jill Wilson with her work entitled ‘The Gatehouse’, and Erica Fairfax-Lucy, who is working on a panel displaying the Lucy Family Crest.
