The entire galaxy of Upaniñads, which are like a necklace of most precious gems, are serving the toenails of Your lotus feet with their brilliance. In such a way, the Vedic scriptures are constantly glorifying Your lotus feet. Great yogés, sages and liberated transcendentalists are engaging in worshiping You. Therefore I fully surrender unto You and humbly pray for Your shelter. (2) jaya näma-dheya muni vånda-geya he jana-raïjanäya paramäkñaräkåte tvam anädaräd api manäg udéritaà nikhilogra-täpa-paöaléà vilumpasi Oh çré harinäma, who is chanted by all sages! For the pleasure of the living entities, You have assumed the form of the supreme transcendental syllables. If a person chants Your name even once, and derisively, too, even then You completely destroy the monstrous mountain of his sinful reactions. Therefore, oh holy name, all glories to You! DIVINE NAMES RETREAT Bhaktivedanta College Radhadesh, April 2011 ÇRÉ KÅÑËA-NÄMÄÑÖAKA (3) yad-äbhäso ‘py udyan kavalita-bhava-dhvänta-vibhavo dåçäà tattvändhänäm api diçati bhakti-praëayiëém janas tasyodättaà jagati bhagavän-näma-taraëe kåté te nirvaktuà ka iha mahimänaà prabhavati Oh illuminating sun of Krishna’s name! If any person by his chanting can even obtain a mere shadow of Your splendor, then You dissipate the gloom of nescience that drags him into the darkness of the material world. You reward even the blind fools who are bereft of any spiritual knowledge with the vision that enables them to take up devotional service. Therefore, Oh çré harinäma, who in this world is able to properly describe Your glories? (4) yad-brahma-säkñät-kåti-niñöhayäpi vinäçam äyäti vinä na bhogaiù apaiti näma sphuraëena tat te prärabdha-karmeti virauti vedaù The Vedas say: “A person may obtain the direct perception of the Brahman effulgence by steadfast, sincere and long-lasting continuous meditation. However, he will not be able to completely eradicate the results of his prärabdha-karma (reactions on his fruitive activities, which have already begun to fructify). They have to be experienced by material enjoyment or suffering. Yet, as soon as a small particle of Your merciful glare starts to reveal its effect, the entire constellation of prärabdha-karma is annihilated. (5) agha-damana-yaçodä-nandanau nanda-süno kamala-nayana-gopé-candra-våndävanendräù praëata-karuëa-kåñëäv ity aneka-svarüpe tvayi mama ratir uccair vardhatäà näma-dheya Oh çré harinäma! You manifest in many forms like Aghadamana (the subduer of the Agha demon), Yaçodänandana (the son of Yaçodä), Nandasunä (the son of Nanda Mahäräja), Kamalanayana (the lotus- eyed), Gopécandra (the moon of the gopés), Våndävanendra (The Lord of Våndävana), Praëatakaruëa (the compassionate master of the surrendered souls), and Kåñëa. Oh holy name, let my attachment to You increase more and more. DIVINE NAMES RETREAT Bhaktivedanta College Radhadesh, April 2011 ÇRÉ KÅÑËA-NÄMÄÑÖAKA (6) väcyaà väcakam ity udeti bhavato näma svarüpa-dvayaà pürvasmät param eva hanta karuëaà taträpi jänémahe yas tasmin vihitäparädha-nivahaù präëé samantäd bhaved äsyenedam upäsya so ‘pi hi cadänandämbudhau majjat Oh holy name! You appear in two forms: väcyaà, the Deity form of the Supreme Lord, and väcakam, Your transcendental name. Of these two, we consider the form of the holy syllables to be infinitely more compassionate than the form of the Deity. Because if a person having taken shelter of the Deity form commits aparädha, the only recourse he has is to become the servant of the holy name and chant incessantly Krishna, Govinda and so on. By your immeasurable transcendental potency, all his offenses disappear and he experiences uninterrupted joy – submerged in an ocean of ecstasy. (7) süditäçrita-janärti-räçaye ramya cid-ghana-sukha-svarüpiëe näma gokula-mahatsaväya te kåñëa pürëa-vapuñe namo namaù Oh holy name! You destroy the entirety of the sufferings of Your surrendered devotees. You are eternally manifest in the transcendental form of intensified bliss. To the residents of Gokula, You are the source of an unending festival of joy and divine pleasure, and You are always saturated in Your magnificent glory and sweetness. I offer my repeated obeisances unto Your lotus feet. (8) närada-véëojjévana sudhormi-niryäsa-mädhuré-püra tvaà kåñëa-näma kämaà sphura me rasane rasena sadä Oh Krishna’s name! You are the life force of Sri Narada’s vénä and You are constantly increasing the sweetness of the delightful waves in the ocean of nectar. Out of Your causeless mercy kindly appear on my tongue incessantly and bestow me with unalloyed affection to the Lord. DIVINE NAMES RETREAT Bhaktivedanta College Radhadesh, April 2011 ÇRÉ-ÇIKÑÄÑÖAKA (1) ceto-darpaëa-märjanaà bhäva-mahä-dävägni-nirväpaëaà çreyaù-kairava-candrikä-vitaraëaà vidyä-vadhü-jévanam änandämbudhi-vardhanaà prati-padaà pürëämåtäsvädanaà sarvätma-çréapanaà paraà vijayate çré-kåñëa-saìkértanam Let there be all victory for the chanting of the holy name of Lord Kåñëa, which can cleanse the mirror of the heart and stop the miseries of the blazing fire of material existence. That chanting is the waxing moon that spreads the white lotus of good fortune for all living entities. It is the life and soul of all education. The chanting of the holy name of Kåñëa expands the blissful ocean of transcendental life. It gives a cooling effect to everyone and enables one to taste full nectar at every step. (2) nämnäm akäri bahudhä nija-sarva-çaktis taträrpitä niyamitaù smaraëe na kälaù etädåçé tava kåpä bhagavan mamäpi durdaivam édåçam ihäjani nänurägaù My Lord, O Supreme Personality of Godhead, in Your holy name there is all good fortune for the living entity, and therefore You have many names, such as “Kåñëa”, and “Govinda”, by which You expand Yourself. You have invested all Your potencies in those names, and there are no hard and fast rules for remembering them. My dear Lord, although You bestow such mercy upon the fallen, conditioned souls by liberally teaching Your holy names, I am so unfortunate that I commit offenses while chanting the holy name, and therefore I do not achieve attachment for chanting. DIVINE NAMES RETREAT Bhaktivedanta College Radhadesh, April 2011 ÇRÉ-ÇIKÑÄÑÖAKA (3) tåëäd api sunécena taror iva sahiñëunä amäninä mäna-dena kértanéyaù sadä hariù One who thinks himself lower than the grass, who is more tolerant than a tree, and who does not expect personal honor but is always prepared to give all respect to others can very easily always chant the holy name of the Lord. (4) na dhanaà na janaà na sunaréà kavitäà vä jagad-éça kämaye mama janmani janmanéçvare bhävatäd bhaktir ahaituké tvayi O Lord of the universe, I do not desire material wealth, materialistic followers, a beautiful wife or fruitive activities described in flowery language. All I want, life after life, is unmotivated devotional service to You. (5) ayi nanda-tanuja kiìkaraà patitaà mäà viñame bhavämbudhau kåpayä tava päda-paìkaja- sthita-dhülé-sadåçaà vicintaya O My Lord, O Kåñëa, son of Mahäräja Nanda, I am Your eternal servant, but because of My own fruitive acts I have fallen into this horrible ocean of nescience. Now please be causelessly merciful to me. Consider me a particle of dust at Your lotus feet. DIVINE NAMES RETREAT Bhaktivedanta College Radhadesh, April 2011 ÇRÉ-ÇIKÑÄÑÖAKA (6) nayanaà galad-açru-dhärayä vadanaà gadgada-ruddhayä girä pulakair nicitaà vapuù kadä tava näma-grahaëe bhaviñyati My dear Lord, when will my eyes be beautified by filling with tears that constantly glide down as I chant Your holy name? When will My voice falter and all the hairs on My body stand erect in transcendental happiness as I chant Your holy name? (7) yugäyitaà nimeñeëa cakñuñä prävåñäyitam çünyäyitaà jagat sarvaà govinda-viraheëa me My Lord Govinda, because of separation from You, I consider even a moment a great millennium. Tears flow from my eyes like torrents of rain, and I see the entire world as void. (8) äçliñya vä päda-ratäà pinañöu mäm adarçanän marma-hatäà karotu vä yathä tathä vä vidadhätu lampaöo mat-präëa-näthas tu sa eva näparaù Let Kåñëa tightly embrace this maidservant who has fallen at His lotus feet, or let Him trample Me or break My heart by never being visible to Me. He is a debauchee, after all, and can do whatever He likes, but He is still no one other than the worshipable Lord of My heart. DIVINE NAMES RETREAT Bhaktivedanta College Radhadesh, April 2011.

THE ENDURING SELF: EXPLORING THE IDENTITY OF THE HARE KRISHNA DEVOTEES BEYOND RACE, LANGUAGE AND CULTURE by S.M. Ramson Student number: 205519769 A dissertation submitted in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the Master of Arts Degree (Religion and Social Transformation) In the School of Religion and Theology Faculty of Humanities University of Kwazulu Natal JOINT PROMOTERS: Professor P. Kumar Professor R. Sookrajh January 2006 i DECLARATION I, do hereby declare that this dissertation, which is submitted to the university for the degree of Master of Arts (Religion and Social Transformation), has not been previously submitted by me for a degree at any other university, and all the sources I have used or quoted have been indicated and acknowledged by means of a complete reference. S.M. Ramson Researcher Professor P. Kumar Professor R. Sookrajh ii DEDICATION This research is dedicated to His Divine Grace A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada, the founder acharya of the International Society for Krishna Consciousness (The Hare Krishna Movement) who in the face of extreme difficulty presented the Gaudiya Vaisnava science of Self Realization and devotion to the Western world, whose courage, insights, perspicacity, purity and love forms the example that I wish to pursue. iii ACKNO WLEDGEMENTS It does not take the stance of a social scientist to understand that one of the enduring features of social dynamics amongst humans is the ability to extend themselves selflessly, and sometimes, even with great effort make sacrifices simply for the progress of others. There is no scale on which I can rate such benefaction, except to understand that I am overwhelmed by a sense of gratitude to several individuals to whom I wish to sincerely express my heartfelt appreciation.

International Society for Krishna Consciousness Founder-Acarya His Divine Grace A. C. Bhaktivedanta Swami PraBhupada Bhaktivedanta College of Education and Culture ‘Vedanta means ultimate knowledge. ‘Intelligence refers to the power to Knowledge is never perfect unless analyse things in their proper one comes to the point of perspective, and knowledge refers to understanding Krishna. To remain understanding what is spirit and in Krishna Consciousness is actual what is matter’. understanding of Vedanta’. Bhagavad Gita 10.4, Letter to Janardana - Los Angeles Srila Prabhupada. 21 January, 1968, The Sanskrit term bhaktivedanta has special significance for Bhaktivedanta College. Vedanta, composed of veda(knowledge) and anta(conclusion), means the culmination of knowledge, understanding, or critical evaluation. Bhakti means loving devotional service to the transcendental, personal source of everything. So the word bhaktivedanta combines the ideas of scholarly excellence and the highest spiritual values and activities. The term bhaktivedanta is given to revered devotee-scholars in Indian spiritual circles. Srila A. C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada the founder-acharya of the International Society for Krishna Consciousness (ISKCON), received this title in the mid-twentieth century from his contemporaries. Late in his life, he wrote nearly seventy books, which are translations of and commentaries on Vaishnava texts. Between 1965 and 1977, he and his followers worldwide started more than a hundred temples, farms, and schools. Nowadays, his teachings are practiced and taught in many congregations connected to ISKCON. Srila Prabhupada is the inspiration behind Bhaktivedanta College, because his exemplary life teaches that the best education combines the advancement of knowledge with self-realization and love of God, or Sri Krishna.
