[2] Chris Barnett, counsel for the City, provided an update on the status of a number of matters in relation to these appeals. The City has been engaged in discussions with different groups of appellants, divided in relation to common thematic issues, in an attempt to narrow and resolve those issues. As a result, a number of issues have been resolved and some appeals have been resolved and withdrawn. -

Please refer to Appendix D for maps of their location. Parks with asterisks * are generically named and can potentially be renamed in the future to recognize the accomplishments of residents who have shaped Markham. Benjamin Thorne Park – named after the namesake of Thornhill, a prominent mill owner and entrepreneur who played a key role in the development of Thornhill Village starting in 1820. He petitioned for a post office in 1829. Arthur Lismer Park – named after Arthur Lismer who was one of the Group of Seven artists and who lived at 22 John Street in Thornhill circa 1916. Sir Robert Watson Watt Park – named after Sir Robertson Watson –Watt renowned Scottish scientist credited as the inventor of radar and knighted in 1942. He undertook top secret trials from 1935-1939 using reflected radio signals to locate aircraft which became known as radar and provided Britain with an effective early warning system against German air attacks in 1940. -

Zoning Application – Status Report Date: June 12, 2007 To: Scarborough Community Council From: Director, Community Planning, Scarborough District Wards: Ward 39 – Scarborough Agincourt Reference File No. 05 195360 ESC 39 OZ Number: SUMMARY This report outlines the status of the subject zoning by-law amendment application. This report also directs staff to continue discussions with the applicant to resolve outstanding issues and to report back to Community Council prior to the Ontario Municipal Board hearing for direction. RECOMMENDATIONS The City Planning Division recommends that: 1. Staff continue discussions with the applicant to resolve the outstanding issues and report back to Community Council prior to the commencement of the Ontario Municipal Board hearing. Financial Impact There are no financial implications resulting from the adoption of this report. DECISION HISTORY In January 1989, the former City of Scarborough adopted a site-specific zoning Staff report for action – Status Report – 4675 Steeles Avenue East 1 by-law amendment to permit the construction of a building and accessory gas bar on the subject lands. The site was later developed with a 8 545 square metre (91,980 square feet) retail facility (previously operated by Canadian Tire) with a density of 0.35 the area of the lot, whereas the zoning by-law permitted a maximum density of 0.40 times the area of the lot. In 1999, Canadian Tire proposed an expansion to its operations which included lands immediately south of the subject lands and applied for an amendment to the zoning by- law for the entire area to permit the construction of a (10 033 sq.
