College-educated, business owner, strong father figure, excellent provider and planner for family. The only survivor of the members of the annex. Otto later remarried and lived to age 91. ! Name: Edith Hollander Frank (Anne’s Mother) Age: Born January 16, 1900, would have been 42 when the family went into hiding in the annex Personality: Edith was very protective of the children. She had the hardest time adjusting to the move to – never fully learned to speak Dutch. Edith died of starvation at Auschwitz-Birkenau on January 6, 1945. !

! Name: (Anne’s Sister) Age: Born February 16, 1926 (3 years older than Anne) Margot would have been 16 when the family went into hiding in the annex. Personality: Serious student, reflective, more reserved and quiet than her sister Anne. Margot’s call-up notice to a work camp spurs the family to go into hiding early. Margot died of typhus in Bergen-Belsen camp likely around February 1945. The camp was liberated by the British two months later. ! !

Name: Annelies Marie Frank (Anne) Age: Born June 12, 1929. She had just turned 13 a few weeks before the family went into hiding. Personality: Anne matured greatly from the time she and her family went into hiding to their capture on August 4, 1944. She went from being a somewhat spoiled and self-centered child to a caring and introspective young woman. Anne died at 15 anywhere from a few days to a few weeks after her sister, Margot. She also fell victim to typhus at Bergen-Belsen around February or March 1945.

Name: Hermann Van Pels (Mr. van Daan) Age: Born March 31, 1890. Age 52 when entering the secret annex. Personality: Mr. Van Pels was a business associate with Otto Frank. They had determined together to go into hiding with their families. The families socialized together and Anne knew him quite well. He could be very playful with Anne and good-humored. At other times, he worried and became easily agitated. Mr. Van Pels was sent to the gas chamber shortly prior to living together in the annex after arriving at Auschwitz-Birkenau. This was witnessed by both his son Peter and Otto Frank. ! Name: Peter Van Pels (Peter van Daan) Age: Born November 8, 1926. Peter would have been 15 ½ upon entering the annex Personality: Quiet, awkward at times, struggled with academics, enjoyed working with his hands at tasks such as carpentry Peter survived the Death March from Auschwitz to the Mathauson camp only to die of exhaustion on May 5, 1945. !

! ! Name: Auguste Van Pels (Mrs. van Daan) Age: Born September 29, 1900. Age 42 when she entered the annex. Personality: Very outgoing and outspoken. Flirtatious, self-absorbed, pessimistic about the future, concerned about material possessions. Specifics of her death are unknown. She was last verified to be seen at Theresienstadt concentration camp, but thought to have been sent to another where it is certain that she died.

Name: Dr. (Dr. Dussel) Age: April 30, 1889 Fritz Pfeffer joined the members in the annex on November 17, 1942. He would have been 53 at that time. Personality: Pfeffer was a smart, dental surgeon, divorced with one child who he sent to safety in England. He was very athletic and physically fit. He had a long-standing romance with a Catholic woman named Charlotta. He was an Orthodox Jew and very knowledgeable about his religion. He and Anne clashed often. Fritz Pfeffer died of Enterocolitis in the Neuengamme concentration camp on December 20, 1944. ! The Helpers ! Name: Hermine "Miep" Santrouschitz-Gies () Age: Born on February 15, 1909. She would have been 33-years-old when the Franks went into hiding. Personality: She began as a secretary in Otto Frank’s company and worked her way up to an administrative position. She was trustworthy, loyal, and dependable as well as being very courageous. She married in July 1941, who also assisted the Frank family in hiding. Miep was able to avoid arrest after the Nazis discovered the annex. She had one child in 1950. She died in January 2010 and was almost 101 years old. !

! Name: Age: Born June 5, 1900. Age 42 when the Frank family went into hiding. Personality: Business associate of Otto who takes control over Otto’s company as a favor due to the laws which prevented Jews from owning businesses. He was kind, courageous, and self-sacrificing. He was arrested for his involvement and sent to several concentration camps. During an air raid, he escaped a German march and was hid in the until the end of the war. He eventually settled in Canada where he died in 1981. ! ! ! Name: Age: Born on August 17, 1896. He was a long-time friend of Mr. Frank and worked with him at Company as an assistant. He was in frail health during the war, suffering from stomach ulcers and other ailments. He was arrested along with Victor Kugler and sent to a prison camp. He became very ill at the camp and, amazingly, was set free to return to Amsterdam. He went back to work at Mr. Frank’s business and dedicated the remaining years of his life to educating others about the plight of the Franks. He did not live to see the dedication of the Anne Frank Museum. He died at the company desk in January 1959. !

! ! Name: Bep Voskuijl Age: Born on July 5, 1919. She was known as the silent helper as she very quietly went about her tasks of assisting the Franks in hiding. Bep took responsibility for purchasing food and supplying the children with books. She assisted Margot in taking a shorthand course while in hiding. She was intensely shy and quiet and generally did not like to be interviewed. She went on to get married and had four children. Her youngest child was n named after Anne. She died in Amsterdam in May 1983.
