Santiago Canyon is now 4-5 in Orange Empire Conference play and 17-8 overall. The Pirates, who have won numerous close league games, are now 8-1 in conference and have an overall record of 17-7. The fast-paced entertaining game featured 15 lead changes with both teams competing at a high level. A huge advantage for Orange Coast was their inside play as they scored 62 points inside the key. The Hawks had no answer for Josh Davis as the 6'6” 270-pound center powered his way to 35 points and 19 rebounds to lead the Pirates. Santiago Canyon was led in scoring by Rocket Henderson who finished with 32 points and Antoine Jenkins, who scored 23 of his 28 points after intermission, including a game tying layup with 3 seconds remaining to force overtime. In the 5-minute overtime, the Hawks scored first when Henderson was fouled on a 3-point attempt. After making 1 of 3 from the foul line to go up 1, the rest of the extra session was all Orange Coast as they outscored Santiago Canyon 10-5 in overtime. This is only the second time all season the Hawks have lost consecutive games, a remarkable feat for a first-year program. Coach Todd Dixon was disappointed with the result. "This was a tough one. We played much 1 better in the second half but we didn't make enough plays on the defensive end and on the oards." This was the second overtime game the Hawks have played this year as they came out on the short end of a 90-87 double overtime loss to Riverside City College on January 3. Santiago Canyon will not play again until Friday when they host Cypress College. They have made arguably the best league in California even stronger with standout teams in their first year of competitive basketball. The 2 teams met for the second time on Wednesday in Joshua Tree and it was Copper Mountain who came away with a 93-86 victory. The Hawks won the earlier contest at Santiago Canyon on January 5 by a score of 103-96. Copper Mountain is now 5-3 in conference play and 18-7 overall while the Hawks fall to 4-4 and 17-7 overall. Tre'Von Bentley scored on an offensive rebound basket right before the halftime buzzer for the Fighting Cacti to make the score 48-45 in favor of Santiago Canyon going into intermission. Copper Mountain was the aggressor most of the second half as they used their size advantage throughout the game to win the battle of the boards and capitalize on second chance opportunities. Copper Mountain leading scorer Murshid Randle scored 19 of his 23 points in the second half, including 4 three-point shots to give his team an 80-66 lead with 2:44 left to play. But Santiago Canyon, as they have done all season, kept battling and cut the lead to 89-84 with 56 seconds left in the game. Copper Mountain, however, took care of the ball and made their free throws down the stretch (12-13 in the second half) to come away with the win. The Fighting Cacti improved their perfect record at home to 8-0. The Hawks were led in scoring by Antoine Jenkins and Rocket Henderson. Jenkins had 31 including a perfect 9-9 from the free throw line. Henderson scored 26 on the evening with 5 three-point shots. Santiago Canyon did connect on 14 three-point field goals but it was not enough on this night. They will go at it again in Costa Mesa against league leading Orange Coast College.
