GAME 3 | MARCH 26, 2021 | DON SHULA STADIUM | UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS, OH SUPER SOPHOMORES If there was any question of who would step up on the “Dark Side Defense” under first-time defensive coordinator Jeff Long, Josh Mc- Lean and Ross Valenti answered it. Both players were pivotal in John Carroll's 28-17 win over Baldwin Wallace, and were recognized for it. McLean was disruptive all over the field with an early career-high two solo tackles, two assisted tackles, a deflected pass, and his evening was capped off with a scoop-and-score touchdown off of a blocked field goal. His performance netted him OAC Defensive Player of the Week Honors, which were accomplished in just his first career start.

Valenti was all over the stat sheet in his first career start, accounting for six tackles including two tackles for loss, a sack, fumble re- covery and quarterback hurry. D3Football.com recognized Valenti’s impact and named him to its team of the week. Both players and the remainder of the JCU defense will be tasked with slowing down the No. 2 offense in Division III and best in the OAC tonight.

SHULA STAPLE This season, the Blue Streaks will be wearing a decal on the back of their helmets dedicated to the memory of Don Shula '51, who passed away on May 4th at the age of 90 at his home in Indian Creek, Florida. Shula played seven seasons in the NFL and eventually be- came the all-time winningest coach in NFL history with 347 wins while winning two Super Bowls with the . In 2003, Don Shula Stadium was christened at Wasmer Field which is the home turf for the Blue Streak football team.

OUT WITH THE OLD, IN WITH THE NEW This season, the Blue Streaks have two new coordinators for each side of the ball. Drew Nystrom replaces Jeff Fink as offensive coordinator after being the offensive line coach for the Blue Streaks in 2019. However, Nystrom is not new to the coordinator role as he spent five seasons at the University of Dubuque in Iowa in the same position. Jeff Long has been promoted to defensive coordinator after Joe Schaefer left to coach at Youngstown State. Long, who is the only full-time coach left from Finotti's first season in Univer- sity Heights, takes over after having served as the defensive line coach the past three seasons. Long helped the "Men of Mayhem" unit become one of the best in the country and in 2018, led all NCAA divisions in sacks per game with 5.18.

ONE LAST RIDE Seniors Joey Bates and Tyshawn Jones have decided to return to the gridiron after gaining a year of eligibility via the transfer por- tal. Bates, a native of nearby Kirtland, started off at State not playing football but came back home to play the game at John Carroll in 2018. Jones, a native of Euclid, originally went to West Virginia State to compete in football but transferred to JCU a few days before Rick Finotti was hired as head coach in 2017.

QUARTERBACK WHISPERER Matt Baker joins the Blue Streak staff as the quarterbacks coach after spending a season as a quality control coach at Western Michigan University. Baker is a former starting quarterback at the University of North Carolina and spent four seasons on six different NFL teams as a practice squad signal caller, playing with stars such as Tony Romo, Drew Bledsoe, and Kurt Warner. He then went on to become a graduate assistant at Ole Miss for two seasons before taking a coaching hiatus.

FAMILIAR FACE IN A NEW PLACE Chad Stalnaker was a force to be reckoned with for the Blue Streak football team from 2016-2019. The two-time First Team All-OAC middle linebacker tallied 186 tackles, 15 tackles, and eight sacks during his four year career. This season, he joins the coaching staff as linebackers coach after having graduated from JCU in 2020.

CANGANELLI'S CURTAIN CALL Michael Canganelli will forever be one of the greatest players in John Carroll football history. Over the offseason, the former two- time First Team All-OAC running back decided to hang his cleats up for good after suffering a back injury. He ranks 10th in program history with 2,286 rushing yards and fifth with 30 touchdowns on the ground in just three seasons. In 2018, he set the single season school record for most all-purpose yards with 1,905.

UP NEXT The Blue Streaks close out the regular season on the road against Muskingum next Friday, April 1, at 7 p.m.
