Local Area Network 2 is a collaboration of four teaching facilities spanning Sydney (Central and West) and in the future will include specific rural NSW sites. LAN2 strives to set high standards in registrar education and training with a commitment to providing a high quality teaching and learning environment by cross- facility networking. Learning is facilitated by both didactic and interactive tutorials provided by recognised experts in the respective fields.

The mission of The Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Radiologists is to drive the appropriate, proper and safe use of radiological and radiation oncological medical services for optimum health outcomes by leading, training and sustaining our professionals.
The current Radiology Training Program, is a five-year program conducted in two major phases:
Phase 1 consists of 3 years of general radiology training; Phase 2 extends over a 2 year period following Phase 1, based on systems-focussed (as distinguished from subspecialty) rotations for advanced radiology training.
For trainees in the current Radiology training programme, requirements are:
Part 1 examination – comprising of 4 papers delivered in an electronic format over 2 days. Progression through the program occurs by the achievement of regular satisfactory assessments made or signed off by Clinical Supervisors & Directors of Training via the Trainee Information Management System (TIMS) on the RANZCR website. All trainees will be issued with a User Guide and log in details to access TIMS, on commencement into the training program. Part 2 examination consists of examinations in Radiology (eMCQs and e-Film Reading), Pathology (eMCQs) and Vivas. In order to be eligible to sit for the Part 2 FRANZCR examination, a candidate must have passed the Part 1 FRANZCR examination and have satisfied the accredited training requirements in Australia, New Zealand or Singapore.
For trainees joining the programme, a completed application form including all required supporting documents is to be sent by the applicant to the Royal Australia New Zealand College of Radiologists (RANZCR) within two (2) weeks of commencement of training date. Late submission may result in unaccredited training time. Applications can be found on the third link on the opposite page of this document.

Part 1 Examination
It is highly desirable and advantageous to yourself, that you attempt the Part 1 examination during the first sitting of 2019. Exams are held in March & September each year. RANZCR policy states that you are allowed 4 attempts to pass the exam in your first 2 years of training. If you are unsuccessful after this time, unfortunately you will be removed from the training program.

Concord Repatriation General Hospital
Concord Repatriation General Hospital (CRGH) is a major hospital in Sydney and is a teaching hospital of the Sydney Medical School at the University of Sydney. The NSW Statewide Severe Burn Injury Service and the Bernie Banton Centre, an asbestos diseases research institute are located at CRGH.
As a 750 - bed teaching hospital of the University of Sydney, Concord offers a comprehensive range of specialty and sub-specialty services, many of which are recognised nationally and internationally as centres of excellence. Some of these include: burns, colorectal surgery, laparoscopic surgery, molecular biology and genetic laboratory, aged and extended care, gastroenterology and palliative care.
The hospital has received consecutive years of accreditation from the Australian Council on Health Care Standards, and consecutive Accreditation Awards from the Postgraduate Medical Council of NSW for the exemplary training of postgraduate doctors.
The Medical Imaging Department is located in the multi building of the hospital offering radiology services that include CT – 64 slice and 128 slice machines, 3T MRI, ultrasound for diagnostic and interventional purposes, CR mammography, orthopantomogram (OPG), screening procedures – one machine with DSA function and 3 mobile fluoroscopy units, 7 general radiography units of which 4 of those mobile units and 2 angiography units with one hybrid unit located in the department and the other in operating theatre. From 2017 Concord Medical Imaging department will be RANZCR (Royal Australia New Zealand College of Radiologists) accredited with 12 radiology training positions.

Royal Prince Alfred Hospital
Royal Prince Alfred Hospital is one of Australia's premier tertiary referral hospitals and is recognised as a worldwide leader in healthcare excellence and innovation. RPA is part of a network of hospitals within the Sydney Local Health District. It is the principal teaching hospital of the University of Sydney.
RPA provides an extensive range of diagnostic and treatment services to more people in NSW than any other public hospital. More than 1000 patients are treated at RPA every day. The Radiology Department at Royal Prince Alfred Hospital and Lifehouse provides equitable diagnostic, interventional and consultative services to medical practitioners and patients through the application of medical imaging technology.
The philosophy of the Department is to maintain a high standard of practice, achieved by coordinated, robust training of a multidisciplinary team. We work within a quality framework focusing on continuous evaluation of services, striving for excellence. The Department provides timely and accessible diagnostic information. Therapeutic treatments utilize the most appropriate imaging modality available, ensuring efficiency and cost effectiveness of practice.
Medical Imaging Department boasts 4 CT scanners – 16, 64 & 128 slice and a 16 slice dedicated interventional machine, breast imaging in the Lifehouse, including interventional procedures, general radiography units including digital OPG and 3 mobile units, 2 angiography suites with a dedicated interventional CT scanner and several standalone ultrasound units used for a variety of interventional procedures, along with 2 MRI machines - 1.5 tesla GE system and 3 tesla Siemens Syngo. There is a 1.5T MRI Avanto system in theatre currently leased by the Neurosurgery Department.

Westmead Hospital Westmead Hospital is a key facility of one of Australia’s largest major health and medical research precincts and is the principal referral hospital for Western Sydney Local Health District providing district level health services to Parramatta, Holroyd and The Hills Shire LGAs including tertiary and quaternary services to greater western Sydney, greater metropolitan Sydney, rural NSW and other states. Westmead Hospital provides approximately 638 acute overnight, 30 day only and 52 subacute beds. The Westmead Health Precinct currently under development is envisaged to be the biggest hospital building project undertaken in Western Sydney and will transform the iconic but ageing Westmead Hospital into an innovative, contemporary and integrated centre that will continue to deliver high quality healthcare and expand the education, health and research capability of the area.
The Westmead Medical Imaging service provides a high end high quality cost effective diagnostic and therapeutic service in all areas appropriate for a major teaching hospital with an exceptional level of teaching and research capability.
The Radiology Department provides diagnostic and therapeutic services across general radiology, computed tomography scanning (CT), magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), fluoroscopy, interventional radiology / angiography, dental radiography and diagnostic mammography.

Blacktown Mt Druitt Hospitals
Blacktown and Mount Druitt Hospital (BMDH) is a single hospital operating across two campuses – one at Blacktown and one at Mount Druitt.
Blacktown Hospital provides a 24-hour emergency service, intensive and high dependency care, sub-specialty acute medical and surgical care, obstetrics and newborn care and sub-acute rehabilitation. Inpatient acute mental health and community mental health services are delivered from Bungarribee House.
Mount Druitt Hospital offers 24-hour emergency care, and a district-wide role in the provision of planned surgery, with a high proportion of general, orthopaedic and breast surgery.
They service residents in the Blacktown, Mt Druitt, Riverstone Local Government Areas and Parramatta, Holroyd, Hawkesbury, Penrith and Fairfield in the surrounds.
Blacktown Mt Druitt Hospital Imaging Department is an integral part of the multi-disciplinary team who cares for patients attending medical imaging investigations and minimally invasive procedures which is central to a modern health care setting. The department uses state of the art equipment in a wide range of modalities including Ultrasound, X-Ray, Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI), Computed Tomography (CT), cardiac CT and catheterisation, dental cone beam CT and OPG.

Currently there are two 3T MRI's, one already doing over 10,000 cases per year, the other a new unit commencing new services, with full case-mix including Neurology, MSK, General Body, Prostate and Paediatric. Staff are actively involved in MRI research.
They boast the largest ultrasound service within public hospitals in NSW. Currently 9 rooms increasing to 12 in 2019. A unique arrangement with ED in having an US room located within ED itself, that provides services 7 days a week and runs extended hours. In addition to a wide range of outpatient paediatric MRI and US cases there is a well-established paediatric unit at Mt Druitt Hospital (12 ward beds, 5 ED paediatric beds with 12000 presentations per year) including the ED service, routine hours at Mt Druitt Hospital.
There is also a new service starting at Blacktown with ED feeding into a new paediatric ward. The impending Stage 2 expansion completion will result in a Blacktown ED paediatric section with 12 beds for clinical acute and fast track, 1 resuscitation bed and 2 in the short-stay area. Estimated 15000 presentations per year. The new Blacktown paediatric ward will have 18 beds.

Network Local Governance Committee Meetings.
These meetings are held on four occasions annually as required by RANZCR. The Heads of Department, Directors of Training from each site, Training Network Director and Network Education Support Officer are invited to attend, along with the nominated trainee representatives. Relevant network issues in regard to trainee progression, recruitment, rotations and other general business is discussed.
