Design your personal coat of arms: Select a shape for your shield. You will put your "motto for life" at the bottom or the top of the shield. Here are some examples, but you will find more on page 3 of this document: 1. Divide the shield into three or four parts. In each part you will symbolically depict one of the following: 1. Your greatest success 2. What you value most 3. Your highest goal in life 4. Your goal for humankind 5. Your family’s importance/Your position in your family 6. Something else (that is important to you) of your choosing 2. Use a piece of construction paper to display your coat of arms. Neatness, presentation, and creativity count. 3. Attach a one–paragraph explanation for each of the three or four sections symbolically depicted on the shield, and explain in one additional paragraph why you chose your "motto for life." These four/five paragraphs must be typed and edited. USE YOUR IMAGINATION AND HAVE FUN! Rubric Elements Your Coat of Arms includes: • includes your "motto for life" and images that symbolically depict your greatest successes, goals, etc. (25 points) • shows neatness, presentation (10 points) • shows creativity (25 points) • contains powerful explanations for each of the elements (25 points) • contains clarity and correctness of language (15 points) 1 Choosing the charges on your shield: A charge is what is shown on the base color of your shield. Animals were frequently used as a main charge. Animals were shown in certain traditional postures, which were not meant to be realistic pictures of the animals. They were not drawn to look three dimensional, but were shown as if they were flat, and with the most characteristic parts of them the most obvious. The pictures were to represent the animal as a symbol. Generally the animals chosen were fierce, and they were often shown in postures of combat. Whatever their main color, fierce animals were often shown with red tongue and claws. Small details on a charge do not have to follow the metal/color rule. A gold griffin can have red claws on a blue field. There were also names for the positions in which the animals were shown. Here are some of the most common. rampant – standing on hind legs rampant guardant – standing on hind legs, face turned toward viewer passant – walking couchant – lying down sejant – sitting The dragon and griffin, of course, are mythological animals. They often combine characteristics believed to be found in more than one animal. The griffin was part eagle, part lion. Since the animals were symbols of qualities, such combination animals were meant to indicate a combination of those qualities. A common design on a shield was a pun on the family (last) name. The coat of arms for "Wheatley" has sheaves of wheat on the shield. Some other shields showed allegiance to one side in a dispute by putting its symbol on their shields. The cross on a coat of arms often meant that the original bearer had been to the Crusades. A cross used on a shield was always taken very seriously. There are many forms of the cross. Another common design was a symbol depecting the bearer’s birth order: label crescent molet martlet annulet eldest child second child third child fourth child fifth child fleur– de– lis rose cross moline octofoil or sixth child seventh child eighth child double–quatrefoil ninth child 2 Ordinaries (see examples above) orle tressure Chief – Dominion and authority. A Cougar stalks slowly, moving low to the ground, making almost no noise as its hind foot lands exactly where its front foot had been. After a stalking Cougar gets close behind a Deer, they powerfully lunge onto the deer's back, biting into the neck. I bet you didn't know this: Cougars actually have nerve endings on the rips oftheir big canine teeth so that they can feel exactly where to put their teeth and bite, immediately severing the spine and killing the Deer quickly and painlessly. The only protection a Deer has from a stalking Cougar is its sensory awareness. If it hears something and turns to see the Cougar moving, the Deer can bound offeasily to safety and the hunt ends.

    HERALDIC TERMS The following terms, and their definitions, are used in heraldry. Some terms and practices were used in period real-world heraldry only. Some terms and practices are used in modern real-world heraldry only. Other terms and practices are used in SCA heraldry only. Most are used in both real-world and SCA heraldry. All are presented here as an aid to heraldic research and education. A LA CUISSE, A LA QUISE - at the thigh ABAISED, ABAISSÉ, ABASED - a charge or element depicted lower than its normal position ABATEMENTS - marks of disgrace placed on the shield of an offender of the law. There are extreme few records of such being employed, and then only noted in rolls. (As who would display their device if it had an abatement on it?) ABISME - a minor charge in the center of the shield drawn smaller than usual ABOUTÉ - end to end ABOVE - an ambiguous term which should be avoided in blazon. Generally, two charges one of which is above the other on the field can be blazoned better as "in pale an X and a Y" or "an A and in chief a B". See atop, ensigned. ABYSS - a minor charge in the center of the shield drawn smaller than usual ACCOLLÉ - (1) two shields side-by-side, sometimes united by their bottom tips overlapping or being connected to each other by their sides; (2) an animal with a crown, collar or other item around its neck; (3) keys, weapons or other implements placed saltirewise behind the shield in a heraldic display.

    Slctccstcvsljtvc antr 10th January, 1855. A MEETING was held in the Town Library, Guild Hall, Leicester, for the purpose of establishing this society. The Venerable the Archdeacon of Leicester was in the chair. He requested Mr. Ingram (the honorary secretary, pro tempore) to read the letters received from various persons who had signified their desire to become members.—The first was from the Bishop of the Diocese, who also expressed his willingness to promote the objects of the society. The second was from Earl Howe, regretting his inability to attend. In a previous letter his lordship stated " I shall be very happy to be enrolled a member, and I assure you I take a decided interest in your proceedings/' Letters from the Rev. G. E. Gillett (mentioning that the Duke of Rutland would accept the office of Patron); from Sir F. G. Fowke (excus­ ing his non-attendance on the ground of ill health, which con­ fined him to his room); and from Mr. Geoffrey Palmer (apolo­ gizing for his inability to be present)—were also laid before the meeting. This part of the business being concluded, the venerable Chairman called on Mr. W. Perry-Herrick, who rose to move the first resolution. He expressed his gratification at being able to take part in the formation of a society which he felt certain would be attended with many beneficial effects, in conducing to the study of eccle­ siastical architecture and general antiquities in the county. He stated his regret that he was so little acquainted with either Archaeology or Architecture ; but that he knew sufficient to enable him to appreciate the value of the labours of those who had leisure to devote themselves more particularly to these interesting pur­ suits, and he hoped, by associating with them at the meetings of the society, he might improve his knowledge, and receive much information and instruction.

    THE IRON MAN Ted Hughes Chapter 5 The Iron Man’s Challenge There was no time to be wasted. The Iron Man allowed himself to be taken to pieces, arms, legs, body, head, all separate, so each part could be flown to Australia on a different airliner. He was too big to be flown out in one piece. At the same time a ship sailed from China, loaded with great iron girders, and another ship sailed from Japan loaded with fuel oil. The Iron Man had ordered these. The girders and the oil and a team of engineers were unloaded on the beach of Northern Australia, near the space-bat-angel-dragon’s neck. Then the Iron Man’s parts were landed at the same spot, and the engineers fitted him together. He stood up on the beach and shouted his challenge. “Sit up,” he roared. “Sit up and take notice, you great space-lizard.” The space-bat-angel-dragon sat up slowly. He had never noticed the fussing of the boats and aeroplanes down there on the beach near his neck. Now he gazed in surprise at the Iron Man, who seemed very tiny to him, though his voice was big enough. The Iron Man spoke again. “I challenge you,” he shouted, “to a test of strength.” A test of strength? The space-bat-angel-dragon couldn’t believe his ears. A tiny little creature like the Iron Man challenging him to a test of strength? He simply laughed. Loud and long. Then he peered down again at the Iron Man, while the echo of his laugh was still rolling round the earth.

University of Atlantia, Session#73 Course outline • The language of vexillology in general, and the anatomy of standards in particular • Historical examples of war standards (or not many cloth things survive). • Designing your own war standards (while there are no cut and dry rules, there’s a general trend) • Basic silk painting skills necessary for producing your own war standard • A flag pole all your own (or 20’ up!) Vexillology: The study of flags Finial Banner: A flag that generally corresponds exactly to a coat of arms. Finial: (often decorative) top of the flag staff. Fly: Part of a flag opposite the staff (sinister) Hoist Fly Gonfalon: Flag hung from a crossbar Ground: the field of the flag. Width Hoist: part of the flag nearest the staff (dexter) Livery colors: principal tinctures of a coat of Length Staff arms; typically a color and metal Pencel, Pennon: small flag, such as a lance Anatomy of a Flag (W. Morgenstern) flag; armirgeous. Often bears a badge against livery colors. (Modern version = pennant.) Pennoncelle: long, narrow pennon or streamer. Often single pointed. Pinsil: Scotish pennon, featuring the owner’s crest & motto in the hoist and badge in the fly Schwenkel: a single long tail extended from the upper fly corner of a flag. Standard: long, tapering flag of heraldic design. Swallow tailed – having a large triangular section cut out of the fly end.
