Lin, whom I had the pleasure of meeting in person only once (at a New York science fiction convention called Empiricon, circa 1986), was one of my favorite fantasy writers as a teenager . (I am particularly fond of his “Callisto” series and was instrumental in the first two volumes be- ing reprinted by iBooks some years later). He wrote many different series over the years, the most famous being the Thongor sword- and-sorcery books and short stories . But the Zanthodon series of ad- venture fantasies is a lot of fun, too, and if you like the “lost world” adventure novel (a la Edgar Rice Burroughs) I’m sure you’ll get a big kick out of Lin’s take on the genre. Howard (e.g., in Bulgarian, Croatian, Czech, Dutch, Estonian, Finnish, French, German, Greek, Hungarian, Italian, Japanese, Lithuanian, Norwegian, Polish, Portuguese, Romanian, Russian, Slovak, Spanish, Swedish, Turkish, and Yugoslavian). As former REHupan Vern Clark states: Robert E. Howard has long been one of America’s stalwarts of Fantasy Fiction overseas, with extensive translations of his fiction & poetry, and an ever mushrooming distribution via foreign graphic story markets dating back to the original REH paperback boom of the late 1960’s. This steadily increasing presence has followed the growing stylistic and market influence of American fantasy abroad dating from the initial translations of H.P. Lovecraft’s Arkham House collections in Spain, France, and Germany. The growth of the HPL cult abroad has boded well for other American exports of the Weird Tales school, and with the exception of the Lovecraft Mythos, the fantasy fiction of REH has proved the most popular, becoming an international literary phenomenon with translations and critical publications in Spain, Germany, France, Greece, Poland, Japan, and elsewhere. [1] All this shows how appealing REH’s exciting fantasy is across cultures, despite inevitable losses in stylistic impact through translations. Howard United Press Association (REHupa) was the first amateur press association (apa) dedicated to that author. Its founder, Tim C. Marion, started it in 1972 when he was 13 and edited it through the first 19 of its bimonthly Mailings, but left afterward since he was ultimately more interested in fan activities than Howard as a literary figure. Before that, discontent with his leadership and with the real dearth of worthwhile essays and critiques during the early years led to future literary critic Don Herron and others to leave and create The Hyperborian League (THL) apa in October, 1975. Its official editor (OE) was Herron and it was “devoted to the creative discussion of authors Clark Ashton Smith and Robert E. Howard and their works,” though material on other fantasy writers and poets was welcomed. Herron said he spelled the name of the apa “Hyperborian” rather than “Hyperborean” because he wanted to emphasize the fact that it was devoted to both CAS (whence Hyperborean) and REH (whence Hyborian). It would still be occasionally misspelled, even on covers. Its official organ document was titled “Skull & Sandalwood,” suggested by REH’s “Skull-Face” and CAS’s Sandalwood. The fanzines composing the quarterly Mailings were at first stapled by the contributors and left so by the OE, who collected them and mailed them out to the current individual members. He also distributed some copies to libraries, sent “speculative” (“spec”) copies to recruit prospective members, and sold remaining ones to defray postage costs.

One area which that tunnel vision has largely eliminated from consid­ eration in histories of fantasy has been the narrative poetry, some quite long, of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries: work that engaged similar subject matter, identifieditself with similar areas of premodem and tradi­ tional narrative, and was widely read by many of the writers of the BAFS Introduction canon. Howard United Press Association (REHupa) was founded in 1972 by a teen-aged Tim Marion as the first amateur press association (apa) devoted to Howard. Brian Earl Brown became Official Editor (OE) by 1977 and put in a lot of work guiding the organization, though not always competently. The Mailings at that time were in a real doldrums due to the paucity of REH-related content and the lack of any interest by Brown to do anything about it. In the early 1980s, Rusty Burke, Vernon Clark, and Graeme Flanagan started pushing for more Howard-related content, with Burke finally wresting away the editorship from Brown, as we saw last time. By mid-1984, the regular membership stood at only 23 and Mailings were down to about 130 pages in length. Post-Brown Mailings were not as big or as prompt as they had been, but were of higher quality in content and appearance, with some upswing in REH-related content and marked by more responsive and less contentious administration. L. Sprague de Camp, Glenn Lord, Karl Edward Wagner, and Everett Winne were honorary members, and copies were being archived at Ranger, Tex., Junior College. Former, longtime REHupan James Van Hise wrote the first comprehensive history of REHupa through Mailing #175. [2] Like him, but more so, we are focusing only on noteworthy content, especially that relevant to Howard. Here are the highlights of Mailings #71 through #80.

    A Proposal for Subcreation: Building Imaginary Worlds Mark J. P. Tolkien, the term “subcreation” is used to distinguish human creation from God’s ex nihilo creation, indicating its reliance on the latter through the “sub” designation (literally “creating under”). “Subcreation” also refers both to the process and product of world-building, while avoiding philosophically slippery terminology like “real” and “imaginary”, which tend to be seen as mutually exclusive domains. Tolkien’s work built on the work of Samuel Taylor Coleridge and George MacDonald, and this book builds on all these author’s work, as well as later authors like Lin Carter, Thomas Pavel, Lubomir Doležel, Marie-Laure Ryan, and others who have paved the way for the study of imaginary worlds. Subcreation: Building Imaginary Worlds, then, is a book-length study of the theory and history of imaginary worlds, including those of literature, comics, film, radio, television, board games, video games, the World Wide Web, and other media, and considers these worlds as distinct objects in themselves. Whereas most approaches in Media Studies are medium-specific or narrative-specific, this book is world-centered in its approach, while still taking issues of narrative and media into consideration. This book is divided into seven chapters, and arranged to set a foundation in the first three chapters before proceeding to explorations of particular aspects of imaginary worlds in the latter four. Chapter one attempts to define imaginary worlds and lays the groundwork for a theoretical description of how they operate, such as the way world-building extends beyond storytelling, the engagement of the audience, and the way in which worlds are experienced.

Poul Anderson also authored several works of fantasy. He received a degree in physics from the University of Minnesota in 1948. He married the former Karen Kruse in 1953. They had one daughter, Astrid, who is married to the science fiction author Greg Bear. He was the sixth Pres- ident of Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers of America, taking office in 1972. He was also a member of the Swordsmen and Sorcerers' Guild of America, a loose-knit group of Heroic Fantasy authors founded in the 1960s, some of whose works were anthologized in Lin Carter's Flashing Swords! antholo- gies. In addition, he was a founding member of the Society for Creative Anachronism. He died of cancer on July 31, 2001, after a month in the hospital.
