Since the beginning of the pandemic, JFS has increased the number of families it serves each week from 180 to about 750. SECURITY WITHOUT WAR A POST-COLD WAR FOREIGN POLICY Michael H. Shuman and Hal Harvey With a Foreward by Senator Paul Simon Westview Press Boulder • San Francisco • Oxford You will say at once that although the abolition of war has been the dream of man for centuries, every proposition to that end has been promptly discarded as impossible and fantastic. Every cynic, every pessimist, every adventurer, every swashbuckler in the world has always disclaimed its feasibility....But now the tremendous and present evolution of nuclear and other potentials of destruction has suddenly taken the problem away from its primary consideration as a moral and spiritual question and brought it abreast of scientific realism. It is no longer an ethical equation to be pondered solely by learned philosophers and ecclesiastics but a hard core one for the decision of the masses whose survival is the issue. – General Douglas MacArthur, 1955 CONTENTS Foreward, Senator Paul Simon Acknowledgments Introduction (n/a) Cold War Policies in a Post-Cold-War World Toward a New View of Security Organization of the Book Part I. Sarah Kendzior: And this is Gaslit Nation, a podcast covering corruption in the United States and rising autocracy around the world, and that autocracy is on display this week with Joe Biden on his world tour and his summit with Putin, which we believe we will be covering in a special episode later this week. Sarah Kendzior: Joe Biden has proclaimed to our allies that "America is back", but what does “America is back” even mean? Back from being an overt mafia state run by a sociopathic career criminal Kremlin asset? Sure. Removed from the conditions that allowed a sociopathic, career criminal, Kremlin asset to become president in the first place? Not so much. Sarah Kendzior: In case you haven't been paying attention to Trump crime cult accomplice, Merrick Garland, the mafia state is still in place and thriving, and we'll get more into that later. But first, some basic questions about America's position on the world stage. If I were one of our allies, I would not trust the US for shit. Would I be relieved that Trump was out? Of course, but would I believe that the US took the threat of Trump seriously, or that it takes the threat of autocracy seriously and the threat of transnational organized crime seriously? No, not based on the Biden administration's actions so far.

We have worked to combat ignorance and hatred, denial and deceit, racism and anti-Semitism. Hatred of the Jew, hatred of the Muslim, hatred of the foreigner is intolerable: we say this in French, Arabic, English, Turkish and Persian. But our globalised and constantly changing society pressures us to act and react quickly, expecting to see immediately the results of our actions so that they can be widely communicated. Resisting this pace, resisting the desire to achieve everything at once and resisting the media’s tyranny means swimming against the flow: this is what we have decided to do. We are in this for the long haul, aware that knowledge needs to be learnt and prejudice vanquished; democracy has to be institutions, “friends of Aladdin” that I hope will constructed and respect for the Other acquired; increase even more so that we can achieve all the enlightenment is a gradual process.

  • PANEL 1: Memory and Identity Melanie Dejnega (University of Bielefeld, Germany)
PANEL 1: Memory and identity Melanie Dejnega (University of Bielefeld, Germany) Post-war immigrants in Austria: identity and belonging in life story interviews By the end of the Second World War, more than one million refugees came to Austria, of which about half a million stayed. Their background and wartime experiences were as varying as could be. Some of them were survivors of the Holocaust or of forced labor, others were members of German speaking minorities having been expelled from South-Eastern and Eastern Europe. However, all of them share the experience of integration into Austrian postwar-society. The situation they faced in Austria was difficult, particularly for those, who did not speak German. These “first immigrants of the Second Republic” who are still alive have been living in Austria for more than sixty years so far. In my paper I will analyze several life story interviews conducted with representatives of this group: I will focus on the constructions of identity and senses of belonging as they are reflected in narratives of the life story by introducing and applying a narratological method. Hence my paper elucidates not only concepts of identity and belonging of post-war immigrants in Austria, but also evaluates, to which extent narratological methods can contribute to analyze life story interviews. Melanie Dejnega, Mag. studied History, Sociology and Spanish at the University of Vienna, Humboldt University and Freie Universität Berlin; Master Thesis (2008) about the impacts of compensation policy on narratives in life-story interviews with survivors of Mauthausen Concentration Camp . Collaborator in “Mauthausen Survivors Research Project” and other projects at the Ludwig Boltzmann-Institute for Historical Social Science, Vienna.
