Re: Final solution of the Jewish question in France Case file: Consultation with SS Lieutenant-Colonel Eichmann (Obersturmbahnführer) in Paris. The announcement made by SS Lieutenant-Colonel Eichmann on the evacuation of all Jews of French nationality has moved me to briefly comment on this question and to highlight with a description of the current situation those points necessary for an implementation that will ensure as little trouble as possible with the French government. 1. As mentioned in various reports, in response to German pressure the French government has declared itself willing to have Jews of non-French nationality, including stateless Jews, arrested and handed over by the French police to the German police for deportation to the Reich. 2. The French government, i.e. foremost Marshal Pétain, defies however every attempt to extend the scope of measures against the Jews to include Jews of French nationality. The introduction of the yellow badge for Jews by the French government was rejected. The yellow badge was introduced in the old occupied territory through German decrees. It has yet to be introduced in the newly occupied territory because the French government continues to refuse to adopt for this territory the same decrees which the German military administration are applying in the old occupied sector. -

Messersmith About the Authors Rae Di Cicco is a PhD candidate in the History of Art and Architecture Department at the University of Pittsburgh, specializing in Central European Modernism. Research for her dissertation, “The Body, the Kosmos, and the Other: The Cosmopolitan Imagination of Erika Giovanna Klien,” was supported by a Fulbright-Mach Fellowship in Austria in 2018-2019. The dissertation traces Klien’s career from her beginnings as a member of the Vienna-based modernist movement Kineticism (Kinetismus) to her immigration to the United States and subsequent work depicting indigenous groups of the American Southwest. Rosabel Rosalind Kurth-Sofer is an artist from Los Angeles. She graduated from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago in 2017 with a focus in printmaking, drawing, and painting. Rosabel received a Fulbright Combined Study-Research Grant in Austria for 2018-2019 to investigate Jewish caricatures in the Schlaff collection at the Jewish Museum Vienna. She currently lives in Chicago and continues to explore her Jewish identity through comics, poetry, and illustrated narratives. Thomas Messersmith is a PhD candidate at the University of Maryland, College Park. He was a recipient of the Fulbright-Mach Study Award in Austria for 2018-2019, where he conducted research for his dissertation, tentatively titled “‘God Rather than Men:’ Austrian Catholic Theology and the Development of Catholic Political Culture, 1848-1888.” This dissertation utilizes both lay and Church sources to explore the ways in which theological and political shifts in the late Habsburg Monarchy influenced each other, ultimately creating a new national and transnational Catholic political culture. -

70 Years After the Liberation 109 Displaced Children 1945 and the Child Tracing Division of the United Nations Relief and Rehabilitation Administration VERENA BUSER, Alice Salomon Hochschule Berlin ith the liberation of Nazi occupied Europe it became obvious that the Nazis had waged an unparalleled war against European civilisation which had also affected Wthe children. Psychologists and social workers encountered children, both Jewish and non-Jewish, who had endured suffering on an unprecedented scale: they were displaced and separated from their families, many of whom had been murdered. According to estimates of the United Nations Relief and Rehabilitation Administration (UNRRA), the largest international aid organisation at the end of the Second World War, there were at least 6,000 children in early March 1946 in the three western zones of occupation who had no relatives and lived in assembly centres or special children‘s centres.1 Who were the Displaced Children? The term ‘displaced children’ comprised minors from all population groups persecuted by the Nazis who had survived the war but were found without relatives; most importantly • Jewishchildren2 who had survived in concentration camps, in hiding with non-Jewish families or in monasteries, in partisan units,3 or in the Soviet Union;4 1 ITS-Arol, 6.1.1/82485874: letter from Miss M. Teaching American Literature: A Journal of Theory and Practice Fall 2017 (9:2) Ascending the Scaffold: Knowing and Judging in Hawthorne's The Scarlet Letter David Rampton, University of Ottawa, Canada Abstract: Reminding students that Hawthorne's The Scarlet Letter begins with an exercise in public shaming helps them relate to the novel. It is set in the mid-17th century, a long time ago, yet the continuities persist. Hester Prynne is forced to mount the scaffold and expose herself and her child to the citizens of Boston, who want to see her degraded and to learn the name of her partner in moral crime. Today convicted criminals in the American justice system are routinely required to make a similar sort of public display. The desire to know how the battle between good and evil is going in Puritan Boston, Hawthorne says, is something that binds the community together and threatens to tear it apart. Knowing can mean sympathy and compassion, but it can also involve a pernicious desire to trespass in the interior of another's heart. Our exercises in close reading reveal that the desire to "know" someone, as the novel's slow motion "whodunit" clearly shows, can lead to deeper intimacy, or a denial of their quintessential humanity. Analyzing the shaming scenes that organize the narrative means helping students to see more clearly the structure of the novel, the issues at stake in it, and the ambiguities of guilt and innocence that dominate in our meditations on our own lives. Teaching The Scarlet Letter is one of the great experiences in the career of any teacher, for reasons that are not far to seek: it is arguably the most widely read 19th-century American novel; its subject, adultery, still has a magnetic attractiveness for us; and the story it narrates is firmly inscribed in the history of America and its culture. -

ARTICLE DETAILS ABSTRACT Article History: Hester Prynne is a young woman of The Scarlet Letter. She has borne a child out of wedlock and been sentenced to wear the scarlet letter A, a symbol of committing adultery for the rest of her life. She refuses to take the Received 14 January 2021 scarlet A as a token of outlaw. With her needlework, she struggles to subvert the original signification of the Accepted 19 February 2021 letter A and to build her new identity as an able, angelic and admirable woman. She transforms the letter A for Available online 9 March 2021 herself outside the patriarchal signifier. However, her return to Boston, where she voluntarily wears the letter illustrates that Hester acknowledges the importance of the social order and her submission to the public. She has the rebellious spirit but it is not strong enough to overthrow the patriarchy. Hester’s dual image of subversion to submission is attributed to Hawthornes’ ambiguous attitude toward women.
