With the latest rise in Covid19 numbers, a reminder of procedures to keep us safe at Mass is in order: Masks are required for all Masses and services at St. Ambrose Church. Wear your mask in and out of the church and at all times in the church, except when receiving Communion. Maintain six feet of social distance coming in, going out, between family groups in pews, and in the Communion Procession. DO NOT congregate and/or chat in the church or in the parking lot before or after Mass. Please do not blow your nose in the church. Come early or on time for Mass. If a particular Mass reaches capacity, the doors will be locked and people turned away. DO NOT KNOCK ON THE DOOR. IF YOU THINK THAT YOU EVEN MIGHT BE SICK, STAY HOME. Yes, the church may be chilly, but ventilation is one of the ways we prevent the spread of the disease. Remember the sick, those who care for the sick, and the vulnerable in your prayers. St. Ambrose has done great so far. Let us keep at it. Bible Bits May 2, 2021 It’s the Fifth Sunday of Easter and the First Reading is Acts 9:2631, wherein we find a portrayal of Barnabas. He was a fantastic spiritual guide. The Christian community did not warm up to Saul one bit. After all, prior to his miraculous conversion, he had severely persecuted them. But Barnabas took Saul under his wing. From Galatians 2:1 we learn that it took 14 years for Saul to become the Apostle Paul. Acts 4:36 says this fellow named “Joseph” was called by he apostles “Barnabas (which is translated ‘son of encouragement’).” The original Greek says “son of παράκλητος” (paraclete) someone called alongside, who intercedes, an advocate, a comforter, an encourager. Of course, the ultimate paraclete is the Holy Spirit. When Paul, Barnabas and Mark go on the first missionary journey into the Mediterranean world., Mark deserts and goes home, and is totally rejected by Paul.Barnabas takes Mark aside, and Paul eventually writes (2 Timothy 4:11), “Mark . is helpful to me in the ministry” The Respect for Life Ministry There’s a new push in Congress to force Americans to pay for abortion. For nearly 50 years, the Hyde Amendment and other similar laws have protected taxpayers from funding elective abortion. Now, some in Congress want to take away these laws. Without the Hyde Amendment, billions of dollars in healthcare funding could go to abortion. The first responsibility of any government is to protect human life. Our country fails to fulfill this most basic role when it neglects to protect life and instead actively promotes its destruction. Pope St. John Paul II wrote that “the value of democracy stands or falls with the values which it embodies and promotes” (Evangelium vitae 70). As Catholics, we are called to follow Jesus’ teachings in all aspects of our lives, including our participation in public and civic life. Together, “we need to bring the Gospel of life to the heart of every man and woman and to make it penetrate every part of society” (EV 80). Let us build a culture that upholds the dignity of every human person. Let us stand for those who have no voice. .
